6-point-something (the number keeps changing) quake in New Zealand's Cook Strait,

in the same place as those strong quakes a couple of weeks ago that shook Wellington and the top of the South Island. I'm half an island away from the epicentre and it was still the strongest quake I've felt in years! How are our friends in Wellington?

which turned out to be a good place to be. Lots of people here in ChCh felt it. I can believe I didn't, as I was just sitting down at the time. Nasty things.

she's nowhere in the States, is she? Some day, I hope to meet more of you in RL. The country is beautiful. But soo many earthquakes would probably make me look for another beautiful place to live. You guys must have nerves of steel!

It makes me feel a bit sick to be honest - I just really feel for the people who are experiencing this one and everything that goes along with it.

and I'm wondering if it was such a good idea! That tropical island was very nice... I'm too far north to have felt these shakes, but they do sound seriously scary. I hope our TORnadoes from further south are safe and sound.

If this were a 6.something under Wellington...whew! As it is, nothing in the house seems to have moved, but I use a lot of blue tack . The shop I was in in Lower Hutt at the time rattled and shook, and we went out into the wide street as it's an old building, but nothing fell there either. Just lucky this time. Does anyone know if DwellerInDale lives in Wellington? Whoo hoo, DID, are you there? Anybody else?

By the way, if I haven't already, may I recommend seismic wax? It's brilliant. And it's cheap and easily available. Blu-tac definitely won't work in a bad shake.

I found seismic wax on line and will look for it here. I've entered half a dozen reports to GNS at this point. It's a small thing, but it does make me feel like I'm doing something about it.

They showed people unable to get a train home tonight as they've been canceled for inspections. Thwarted commuters along the main thoroughfares were holding up signs with their destinations written on them - and drivers were picking them up. Not saying it mightn't happen in other places, too, but it does happen here. I love New Zealand. I really do.

They do get that alert-cat-noticing-something-interesting look. They weren't raised with earthquakes, but they're becoming old hands now, thanks.

and also that Wellington's building codes seem to be holding up, so far. I caught up with friends from Wellington last week (they're travelling in Europe for a few weeks, so will have missed this latest one). He's an engineer so it was interesting talking to him about the structural stuff.
