An interesting revelation by Evangeline Lily about Tauriel.
|

|
|
On her Twitter feed - https://twitter.com/EvangelineLilly - she has answered a number of fans' questions, and this answer jumped out at me: Yes @JulieCGaillot, #Tauriel will be a part of the journey until the #BOFA! So let the speculation begin: Does 'until the BOFA' mean that she's on-screen during the battle, or is her character involved up to but not in the big battle? And for those who were discussing a few days ago the unreality of a warrior having such long hair, these comments from her might interest you: * My long, red wig not only got in the way in stunt scenes, but gave me an incredible headache. * Once in a stunt scene, a portion of my wig got torn from my head...glue'n'all. * Once in a stunt scene I shot my ear right off!
Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..." Dwarves: "Pretty rings..." Men: "Pretty rings..." Sauron: "Mine's better." "Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded beggar with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak. Lilly mentions a few times about how "selfless" her character is. Finally a quality about this character that I like!

After FotR came out, a serious archer commented at length on Legolas' hair, particularly appreciating the braids that kept it from interfering. It's a shame that they screwed up this in Tauriel's case. Surely a female Elf warrior would have developed practical ways to keep her hair out of the way. This is another, particularly egregious, example of this character being a pander to the female audience (and fairly poorly conceived one, to this extent) rather than a serious element in the story. That hair looks ugly and fake, besides.

I can imagine it! I am surprised that's all that happened to it! Someone pointed out on my hair thread that in addition to getting in the way, what's to stop an Orc from grabbing a handful? According to her answers, one just might have! (With all due respect to PJ&co and my eternal gratefulness that they gave us Middle-earth on screen, even if there were some changes, I have to say they went a bit too far with Tauriel's hair IMO) hence my new signature line
Tauriel (as her hair catches during BO5A)- Ah, now I understand why you keep your beard so short, master Kili! Kili: Um, because it grows slowly? (glares at her for perceived insult) Tauriel: Because your arrows don't get tangled in your *^%*(^$%* beard every time you shoot! (more curses as it gets further tangled) Kili: Um, YEAH! That's it! That's why I keep my beard short! (strides off triumphantly with a huge grin on his face, still shooting arrows as the cursing and tangles continues behind him) Tauriel keeps fighting the tangles on the battlefield long after Dain takes the throne and Dale is rebuilt. Frodo takes the ring to Morder and once Sauron is defeated she FINALLY gets the last arrow out.

I think she almost certainly will be in the BOFA, I don't think they would make such a big deal about what a "killing machine" she is only to leave her out of the big battle. However the "until the BOFA" statement is still interesting to me, since there's been a lot of speculation she'll be killed off there. Could this be what the "until" part is implying? I mean, if she survives you'd expect to see her in the ending as well, right?

Haha, that sounds like a good idea! I wonder why none of the Orcs have ever tried it? Hmm. ORC #1: There goes the she-elf! ORC #2: Look at that hair. There's tons of it! ORC #3: Great, you grab some of it and I'll shoot her. ORC #2: EWWWW! I'm not touching it! ORC #1: Me neither! It's Elf hair, who knows where it's been? ORC #3: All right! Let's just shoot her. How hard can it be? And none of the Orcs were heard from again.

I think she might just be mirroring the original twitter question's wording. But really, everyone's journey (in this story) (except for Bilbo) ends at BOFA whether they live or not. I don't think much will happen to the other characters, especially "minor" characters, after BOFA.

Pandering is all it is. She is a poorly conceived character. Like Azog's personality and design, she reminds me of a video game character. I miss the artful ambience the original trilogy had.

"it is our fight" I know 7th grade drama club students who could have delivered that line 1000 times better than her. But maybe that's what they needed someone who acting abilities are worse than Bloom's so that his wooden line delivery wont be so noticeable I still say she is only there to be PC and represent women in Middle earth, so there is some feminine energy The sooner they kill off her character the better IMO

This is just silly. I swear some of the nitpicks towards this character are getting ridiculous. It's a small line from a trailer. There's no need to bash an actress over something so little. There is nothing wrong with her delivery either. I know a lot of people are pissed that Peter Jackson decided to add in a new character... but come on.

My Top 5 Wish List for "The Hobbit" 5. Legolas will surf down Smaug's neck 4. Bilbo will be revealed to a Robot 3. Naked PJ cameo as Ghan-Buri-Ghan 2. Use of not only 3D, but smell-o-vision, plus the inclusion of axes coming out of the seats and poking the audience when appropriate 1. Not only keep the claim that Thorin & Co. ran amok in Mirkwood "molesting people", but depict said incident in vivid detail!!!!!

An Occupational Health & Safety memo should have gone out to all elven kingdoms re: long hair and warriors. A) under no circumstances shall any elven warrior, regardless of gender, have excessive length of hair longer than four fingers wide unless it is appropriately restrained by headgear.

so far is just horrible. everything she has said is just plain awful IMO and if the acting we see in the trailer is any indication of the overall character, I say leave her on the cutting room floor. Because at this point I'm not impressed. Her delivery of those lines in the trailer are awful and cringeworthy. I wasn't bashing the actress just pointing out that her acting of those lines in the trailer are very wooden and unnatural. I'm sure she is great in other things just not in the Hobbit from what we have seen so far. Personally I think the Hobbit would have been better without her

regarding the new characters in DOS that critiquing their lines and looks in the trailer is the bulk of any commentary right now. Although I'm keen to see how Tauriel does in the film as (apart from Arwen) we've only seen female elves look ethereal so far, and we know from Tolkien's writing (was it in the Silmarilion or another book?) that female elves do fight, at least until they become mothers.

Can you at least give the character a chance? If I had to guess, you've already decided to hate Tauriel before even seeing the film. Saying things like "The Hobbit would have been better without her" more or less confirms that. Plus, there's hardly anything "awful and cringeworthy" about the delivery of the "This is our fight" line. The line itself is kind of awkward, but it's hardly badly delivered. Also, it's such a small piece of dialogue that it's impossible to judge a performance based on it.

Which is just really gross to me. Her hair doesn't bother me at all, it's the cuts between Thorin's real and fake beards from block one and two that irk me. It's so blatantly obvious as Viggo's fake beard at the end of ROTK.
"There is a long road yet," said Gandalf. "But it is the last road," said Bilbo.

There was a captain of the guard, it could have been female. Minor characters have to be fleshed out a bit and given names. My problem with Tauriel is just that nothing we've seen or heard of her so far encourages me to think that she was clearly thought through as a valid character as opposed to a cipher thrown in for the "girls in the audience".

That's been true for centuries. There was a famous O'Henry short story (The Gift of the Maji) in which a woman selling her hair was a major plot point. But this wig, regardless of what it's actually made of, is a peculiar color and texture that doesn't resemble normal hair at all.

... or look at anything that's new, different or unexpected about these films without shouting 'meh, that's WRONG, I don't like it, I know better' before they've even seen how it plays out. I've just been ploughing through the endless gripes and moans about Beorn (from one low-res backview), now Tauriel (who of course everyone knows all about, even though she hasn't appeared yet), wondering why on earth I'm bothering, and whether to give up on The Hobbit threads altogether. It's so depressing. And I'm wondering how this must look and feel to the actors and designers who have been working all hours for the last - how many years is it now? - to create something fabulous and engaging only to meet this constant wall of 'that's not how I wanted it to be, that's WRONG.' Not that they would expect constant - or insincere - praise. Artists are more aware than anyone else of the shortcomings in their work. But simply a willingness to engage with it and understand it.... It's only voices of reason, like yourself, that keep me here.
