What is the worst tasting food you've ever tried? Can't Post

I was going to do a "best/worst tasting food" thread, but I honestly could not come up with an answer for "best tasting food". There's just way too much good stuff to pick just one. So I settled on "worst tasting food". But feel free to add your "best" one if you want to.

Anyway, my answer is kangaroo. I picked some up at an exotic meat shop about an hour north of where I live (along with some alligator, wild boar, and ostrich, which were all excellent), and I have to say that it was the worst thing I ever tasted in my life. I was actually shocked at how bad it was, seeing as I'm generally a meat lover, and I've heard some people say that they loved it. It honestly tasted like what I would think dung would taste like. Horrible, horrible stuff.

So, how about you all?

My grandmother MADE me eat some of it as a child. Godawful. Will never forget it and would never go near it again.

I have had alligator too Salmacis and found it very good. I didn't even know Kangaroo was 'edible'...sounds like it wasn't for you! Tongue

the scene, as i understand it, is exceptionally well-written. fili (in sort of a callback to the scene with the eagles), calls out "thorRIIIIIIN!!!" just as he sees the pale orc veer in for the kill. he picks up the severed arm of an orc which is lying on the ground, swings it up in desperation, effectively blocking the pale orc's blow. and thus, forever after, fili is known as "fili orc-enshield."

this earns him deep respect from his hard-to-please uncle. as well as a hug. kili wipes his boots on the pale orc's glory box. -- maciliel telpemairo

Brown, SWEET goat cheese. Had it in Bergen, Norway, spat out the first bite and fed the rest to the seagulls. Something about the sweet + cheese taste was just wrong.

Lima beans rank high on the list of food I won't eat, but mostly because of the texture. Texture often bothers me more than taste when it comes to food. Something about the texture of beans and ground-up meat puts me right off either.

A waffle [In reply to] Can't Post

A waffle with caramel, bananas and soft-serve ice-cream. I felt so ill after I had eaten it; I have not been able to eat caramel, waffles and soft-serve ever since, and have, in fact, also been avoiding anything that contains sugar.
Fortunately, I can still eat bananas.Wink

my mother-in-law made "awful waffles" [In reply to] Can't Post

that's what they called them. Waffles with syrup, peanut butter, and whipped cream. I couldn't eat them, but my wasband & his brothers adored them.

I had a boyfriend in college who made sandwiches with peanut butter, bananas, mayonnaise, lettuce, and Anaheim chile peppers. He made me try one once. Once was more than enough.

When we lived in Africa, we had a chance to try this. Although eaten by the natives, it was just disgusting to me. It is always a matter of personal taste though, for instance I can't stand oysters, just the smell of them makes me nauseated. I know lots of people love them.

Fried grasshoppers. [In reply to] Can't Post

Eaten straight out of a little basket. Fried earwigs were discovered mixed in with the grasshoppers, but that wasn't quite enough to deter me. Did take some large quantity of vodka before I was brave enough, though. Rather scratchy and tickly going down. I did my best to swallow without chewing!

My Mother's homemade ice cream ... [In reply to] Can't Post

Oh it was terrible. When we were children, she decided that she'll give homemade ice cream a go. Now, she's a fabulous cook, so one might be mistaken that she was never any good. I can't remember what flavour it was supposed to be ... but boy, it was salty. If you want to see what it tastes like, get some ice cream, pour in some salt, and eat.

My siblings and I took one bite and said how awful it was. My Dad thought we were being rude, so without tasting it himself, made us sit there and eat it all.

To this day, we joke about it with her. My Mum says the recipe said to put a tablespoon of salt in it. But regardless, I'm convinced she read salt wrong, or mixed it up with the sugar amount. Yuck.

I could add a couple more of bad tasting foods to that; including, haggis, custard, any cooked fruit and liver.

The salt [In reply to] Can't Post

isn't meant to go *in* the ice cream, I don't think. The salt is to make the ice get colder, as I understand it. You can make a small amount of home-made ice cream in a plastic bag, which is *inside* another, larger plastic bag with the ice and salt. You can get the receipt on the 'net and I've tried it, it's pretty good. But if you get a tiny hole in the inside bag, which if you're using ice cubes, is easy to do, then that would ruin the inside stuff.

Shark, Icelandic style [In reply to] Can't Post

On holiday in Iceland, one evening we went for a traditional Icelandic meal. Most of it was great, but at one point they introduced us to a "local delicacy". Apparently the Icelanders used to think that shark meat was poisonous unless you buried it in the beach until it was absolutely sky-high ... Well, they issued us each with all of a quarter cubic inch of this wonderful stuff, but it was *more* than enough - I had it in my mouth about one second before spitting it out, and the taste lingered something terrible.

It's absolutely disgusting. It has a pickled, slimy texture, and lots of brittle bones. It used to be that lutefisk was a poor man's food, but now it's a bit nostalgic among those with Scandinavian heritage. For others it's a test of courage, as in: "I dare you to eat that." Ugh!

Never liked it growing up, and it was served frequently. No matter how you try and disguise it, liver just seems to have the consistency of baked mud.

i have a sad [In reply to] Can't Post

i have a sad -- yet ultimately triumphant -- liver story.

mom was trying very hard to provide good nutrition. she thought this would be a good variant.

it was set on my dinner plate -- a whole slab of it. whale-sized.

i was told i had to eat it. i tried it. it was awful.

i put ketchup on it (which usually did the trick). it was like the liver was defiling the ketchup.

i put shop-rite's creamy french dressing in nearly neon-orange on it (the never-fail condiment). it withered under the dull malice of the liver.

i tried. i really, really tried. but my parents would not yield.

well, i would not either.

i was told i could not get up from the table until i ate all the liver.

stalemate.

boring interlude while my parents finished their dinner and exchanged extremely dull parents / adults talk.

more tedium. parents clearing the table. the clink of plates getting washed off and stacked in the dishwasher. sounds of cabinets opening and closing. the gentle, rubbery suction of the refrigerator door opening and closing.

now the table was a barren, wooden wasteland. except for my plate of liver.

adults puttered around a bit more, then removed to the bedroom to watch television. they turned out the diningroom light, and the kitchen light.

me. the dim vent light above the stove. and the plate of liver.

i sat there long. very long. no sounds around me. it was like meditating with the liver. but i would not yield. i knew i would not yield.

at some point, i transcended time.

late, very late, a parent came back into the diningroom. and told me to go to bed.

the end.

cheers --

What a lovely story. [In reply to] Can't Post

Laugh

I employed similar tactics, and while the standoff didn't last until bed time, we did reach an agreement: my dad would serve me cow heart instead of liver. I'd never have to eat another bite of liver if I finished the serving of heart. To this day, nearly 40 years later, I still have not eaten another bite of the world's most awful tasting food.
