Idol chat, anyone? Can't Post

Which two guys should go home, and which two are your favorites so far?

I'll start it off by suggesting that Jared Cotter (Marvin Gay song) and Sanjaya Malakar should go home. Jared's cute, but he was awkward on stage, and his voice isn't that great. Sanjaya's performance was just totally cringe-worthy.

My current favorite is Sundance (*ducks*) (I'm a sucker for bluesy singers, he picked a great song, and he's got a great voice), and I also liked Chris Sligh (another great voice).

Just for fun, I gave everyone grades, and others earning a B or B+ for me were Phil Stacy (Navy guy), Blake Lewis (beat-box guy), and Chris Richardson (Geek in the Pink). (I'm saving the A's for the ladies, because the guys still are not in the same league).

that Sanjaya should go home too, but Mrs. Foe predicts he will be the guy to stay longer than he should this season. There is always one, you know? My second pick to go would be either Jared or perhaps even Brandon. I think Brandon is talented enough for the top 6, he just doesn't pick the right songs, sadly.

I think the 6 to advance to the real show will be Blake, Chris (both), Phil, Sundance, and AJ. I don't necessarily like all of them, but I think they'll advance.

Mrs. Foe might be right. There's always one very "youthful" contestant who appeals to the pre-pubescent girls, and Sanjaya might be the one. (Oh no. Now that I think about it, that's probably why they put him through!)

Your prediction for the final six is exactly the same as mine, except that I think they actually are the best six ;-) based on their performances so far. But Brandon could still pull it out, and AJ could still blow it.

Yep. [In reply to] Can't Post

Those two (AJ/Brandon) seem to be the wild cards, as either could show or go. They were all so much better than last week, which perhaps was a fluke. I'm doubting last week was a fluke for the girls, but I'm very interested to see who will "bring it" tomorrow (well, tonight, now).

LOL someone has seen the Antonella Barba photos?

*AHEM*

Anyhoo - I liked Sanjaya going into this, but his performance last night was weird and wimpy. I felt so bad for him afterwards when Simon was grilling him. He seems like such a nice kid, but too young and carefree for this competition. I predict a bright future for him though, because I think girls love him, plus he's all-around a likable kid.

I actually though Jared did a great job last night.

Chris Sligh has to be the favorite at this point, doesn't he? Yes he looks funny, but his voice is in another class.

It looks like the ther Chris is the judges' favorite at this point. I think he has been all along. They really like his Justin Timberlake look.

WTH is Gimli, errrr I mean Sundance, still doing there?

I think the guys discussion is irrelevant since one of the girls are going to win it this year. It's all about Melinda and Latisha.

Love Sundance. [In reply to] Can't Post

Though FoP's right on with the "Gimli" - hadn't thought of him as dwarvish, but he sort of is.

I'm so glad Sundance was back last night - and he didn't turn all red or anything! I'm hoping (shamelessly) that in addition to a much better performance the clip about his son will get him votes.

He's third for me, though; my favorites by far are Chris Sligh - aka Christina Aguilera, and I missed that sense of humor last night! - and, to my surprise, Blake. Beat box (beatbox?) usually drives me to distraction, but I like him. He can sing. He makes good choices. And he reminds me strongly of someone and I can't put my finger on it, so even if I didn't love him he'd need to stay till I figure it out. I love these two, and like Sundance quite a lot, and not becasue my first two dogs were named Butch. (No, not on purpose.)

The two who *should* go home are, yes, Jared (he devoted THAT song to his mother???) and Sanjaya (though my relief that he did not do Michael Jackson as I thought he was dressed up for was so great that I'll give him a little slack). Sanjaya's song was one Fred Astaire made famous... Fred Astaire was a dancer who sang. The song wasn't exactly written to showcase one's voice.

The one I *want*, desperately, to go home is Other Chris. I don't get it. I mean, I hate hip hop, yes, but I've hated what some of the others sang too, and was able to separate the what from the how; I hated the song from Dreamgirls that what's her name sang, but it wasn't hard to acknowledge that her voice was phenomenal. But Chris NotSligh... I don't get it. I hate listening to him. To my ear he's weak and, yes, pitchy, I don't like the tone of his voice - and they rave about him. He'll be this year's can't-stand-him-why-is-he-still-here person for me, I think.

Chris NotSligh [In reply to] Can't Post

AKA Chris Richardson, may appeal to the judges more on his charisma than his voice; he seems a lot more comfortable on stage than most of the other guys. FoP's probably right on the Justin Timberlake thing.

About Sanjaya -- "Fred Astaire" explains why the song wasn't a good choice to showcase vocals; if Sanjaya likes that era so much, there are so many other great songs that would work better. A nit-pick, but it also bugged me when he gestured to his "top hat" and "tails," which he so obviously was not wearing. (That should have been a clue right there; if he couldn't wear a top hat and tails in the venue, then he shouldn't have chosen a song that mentioned them!)

It seems like Sundance is emerging as the most polarizing of this year's singers. On pure vocal quality, he's certainly one of the best, but he seems to have some major issues with performance nerves, and needs to pick songs inside his comfort zone in order to do well. I can understand why a lot of people wouldn't pick him as their favorite, but I don't understand why anyone would hate him. I think that with more performing experience, he'd be outstanding. On the other hand, America has a hard time getting past overweight.

That and a total lack of emotion or inflection while he sang, those were the main issues. He's not bad - the performance was.

I keep thinking of something said on TWOP - he and his sister should get their own variety show and call it Dhani and Malee.

One thing Sundance has going for him in the overweight department is that he's not a girl. I hope his size doesn't tell against him... You just never know.

I LOVE MELINDA! [In reply to] Can't Post

It has to come down between her and Lakisha. What the heck was red-skunk-stripe girl thinking??? There are certain singers whose songs you should NEVER sing on American Idol:

Celine Dion
Mariah Carey
Whitney
Heart

Their voices are so powerful and unique that any attempt to sing one of their songs will only point out how much less of a singer you are!

Antonella sucks. I can't believe she took a shot at Simon about Jennifer "Crazy Eyes" Hudson.

Me too! She's the one to beat. [In reply to] Can't Post

Tonight was really strange. Most of the best singers did worse than last week, and most of the worse singers did better. Oddly enough, Melinda's was the only performance I actually liked better than Sundance's (*ducks*).

Even LaKisha took a step backwards. I still think she's very talented, but it's almost as dangerous to take on Gladys Knight as to take on Whitney. Her phrasing wasn't smooth enough.

The pleasant surprises for me were Leslie Hunt and Haley Scarnato -- I don't think they're the most talented, but I enjoyed their performances the most after Melinda's.

I also disagreed with the judges more than usual; they didn't penalize their favorites enough for off-pitch and harsh, shouty tone, both of which were rampant tonight. It doesn't help that I didn't like any of the songs, but a really good singer can sell me just about any song.

If it were up to me, the two going home would be the first two who sang -- Gina Glocksen (red-skunk-stripe girl), whose tone was so harsh that it was painful, and Alaina Alexander, who was off pitch the entire time, plus I could hardly understand a word she sang. Antonella Barba is right down there with them, though I give her credit for some nice falsetto; at least she didn't make my ears hurt. Unfortunately, I suspect that Leslie Hunt is in danger, too, though I'd really like to hear more of what she can do.

Yes and No [In reply to] Can't Post

Well the voters got it right on the girls, I think. Don't get me wrong - I wanted to see Antonella BFF go home as much as anyone. But I can't argue with the other two who got cut. Plus they both had such bad attitudes, which I really hate to see in an Idol loser.

I don't think AJ should've gone home tonight. Nick - ehhhh, I think he's a real good singer, but I thought his performance the other night was pretty crappy.

I don't think so! [In reply to] Can't Post

Alaina really needed to go (I thought she was the very worst of the ladies), but I liked Leslie. What bad attitude? I thought it was hilarious when she sang, "Why did I scat?" Way to go! I don't think she's as talented as several of the others, but I actually *enjoyed* her performance Wednesday night more than than anyone else's except Melinda's.

If you want to talk "bad attitude," what about Antonella Barba trying to compare herself to Jennifer Hudson? (And, as Simon noted, completely missing the fact that the *judges liked* Jennifer! It was that national audience that sent her home.) Antonella is still around on her looks, period.

Kind of like the way Sanjaya is still around on his appeal to prepubescent girls. You're right, Nick was pretty bad and deserved to be canned (I fast-forwarded through his encore performance tonight), but AJ? No way! Even if Sanjaya got the votes, I still can't believe Jared wasn't the next to go.

So as far as I'm concerned, America got 2 right and 2 wrong. (Of course, it's not like I voted or anything!)

After listening to snippets again tonight, I'd really like to see the whole contest come down to Melinda Doolittle and Chris Sligh. (That is, if they don't really screw up between now and then!)

Yes! But Lakisha has to be in the mix too. I think those will be the final three. I really think the winner will be Melinda, though (I hope).

As for the bad attitude, go back and watch Tuesday night, after her performance. She was making really disgusted faces as the judges were criticising her performance. I dunno - she just rubbed me the wrong way. Same with stick-figure-robot girl. I was glad to see them both go. I can't disagree at all on BFF-girl. She is awful. I think there is a conspiracy to keep her around longer so more of her amateur porn pics continue to leak out.

Great nicknames. [In reply to] Can't Post

Of course, this is how I refer to them now, too.

I didn't realise that Leslie and AJ sang the same song, they did quite different renditions of it. I agree with Aerin, Leslie had a good voice and I loved her "Why did I scat?" interjection. BFF should definitely have gone home before her, but in the end she (Leslie) would've gotten cut anyway. I think the top 6 girls will be: Melinda, LaKisha, Jordin, Sabrina and the one that sings like Beyonce- Samantha? (even though I don't like Beyonce)...and BFF. I would prefer Gina, but I think BFF is going to get it.
Totally agree on Sanjaya. He looked SHOCKED when he did not get cut. AJ should not have gotten cut, but Nick Pedro was meh.
Oh, and I love how Chris Sligh has a gorgeous wife, and his attitude about her: How did I land her?! Very cool/geeky/cool.

You're probably right about the top 6 girls. [In reply to] Can't Post

I agree Leslie probably wouldn't have lasted much longer, but would have liked to see Antonella, Haley, and (sorry!) Gina go before her. I still don't understand why Simon was making fun of her scat-singing; it sounded fine to me. (I usually agree with Simon about 95% of the time when he's negative, though I think he's more often too easy on his favorites.)

I think Melinda, LaKisha, Jordin, and Stephanie (that's who you were trying to think of) are shoe-ins for the finals, but Sabrina could go either way -- she hasn't shown enough personality for people to be really rooting for her, and she's not vocally in the same class as these four. I personally don't care for Gina at all, but Haley's not bad. Still, I'm afraid you're probably right that Antonella will take the final slot.
