PJ says Desolation of Smaug will be the best of the six Middle-earth films

On TV3 news last night, Ian McKellen was filmed visiting the Isaac Theatre Royal - the theatre damaged almost beyond repair in the Canterbury earthquakes and for which Ian toured a stage play around New Zealand to raise money for its restoration. Near the end of this clip, Ian says that Peter believes DOS will be the best of all six movies of LOTR and The Hobbit. That's a heck of a call! So, how is your expectation now?
Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..." Dwarves: "Pretty rings..." Men: "Pretty rings..." Sauron: "Mine's better." "Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded beggar with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak. I bet he was pretty pleased with King Kong and AUJ too. Peter's vision and opinion doesn't matter to fans if he's off the mark. I had perfect faith before the Hobbit, but no longer. Im hoping its good though and think it will be.

Wow, that *is* quite a limb to go out on. Wonder if its a bit of tunnel vision, with doing current editing, because he hasn't gotten around to TABA yet? Because I would think that the impact of TABA will be quite intense. In any case will have a heck of a time being better than ROTK! I like hearing that he's happy with it though. Expectation wise I am excited for DoS, rather dreading TABA a bit.

We have epic drama between dwarves and elves, a dragon encounter (and possible slaying), the thriller-mystery portion of Dol Guldur (and possibly more) - sounds so freaking epic! Politics, dark drama, epically beautiful and hauntingly powerful characters striving for positions of power and famed wealth ... mystery, suspense, ninja-like battles in the trees ... and more. I'd say TABA could be in the running but that one will probably "slow down" at the end, too - and if you look at the movies that are getting acclaim these days, they are packed with action-violence to the extreme - so it is going to be the most actiony of the 3 that is "the best", most likely - at least as judged by today's critics. Who knows what bits will stand the test of time best!

I am dreading TABA because of the whole end and what happens more than anything plus the fact that Middle Earth in film will be over. That having been said I fully expect to enjoy DoS completely!

It hasn't raised my expectations as i want them nice and low so as to avoid disappointment as last time they were too high but it is good to here him have confidence in his work. I really hope it is the best but for me it will have to be a massive improvement on AUJ if it is to better FOTR (the best imo). Hopefully he is right and has created something awesome, who knows?! I imagine come TABA time he will say something similar so as to create interest or maybe he will be totally honest and say 'DOS is better' lol.

Peter Jackson said early on that The Hobbit might not be what people expect, meaning we should adjust our expectations. From the evidence so far, it appears that he may have realized what people might think of the more fantastical, more cartoony (i.e., video game, rock 'em sock 'em stone giants), more unrealistic nature of The Hobbit movies. This may be why he is satisfied with more juvenile themes (snot, bird crap, slime, bunny sled) where no one gets hurt (until the end), bloodied and smashed to pieces falling down rocky caverns. Jackson may understand why the critics complain about there being no sense of peril such that he predicted it for himself long ago because that's what he wants - child's fare for a childrens' book - in the same spirit that Tolkien originally wrote it. This would contradict his stated desire to create a coherent six-part Middle-earth series, but perhaps the childish point of view for The Hobbit was more important to him. Maybe he defines that as being more in the spirit of Tolkien than anything else. I wrote what I did above because if Jackson continues with The Hobbit in the same vein as the first movie, I do not see how to possibly compare The Hobbit prequel series to what was so much more of a realistic, historical story of The Lord of the Rings. He would have to believe that The Hobbit is apples to apples to The Lord of the Rings - it's not, unless he pitches The Hobbit to us as a changeup. That would again run contrary to his initial claim that these movies would be different than The Lord of the Rings. I hope Jackson is listening enough to criticism that the two remaining movies will stand up to direct comparison with his more successful effort ten years ago. The answer may lie in what in his movies Jackson believes constitutes "best." Is that realism? The story? The writing? Being true to Tolkien? Rising above juvenile tendencies? Or is it the quantity of slime, bathroom humor, and special effects or the impressive technical aspects of HFR 3D?

When you look at what's to come in DoS I think PJ may have a valid argument, particularly bearing in mind we really get to delve in to the appendices in this movie! We get Mirkwood, Beorn, Laketown, Dale and Smaug, not to mention Gandalf's journey to Dol Guldur and the Necromancer. What's not to look forward to?! AUJ was all about setting the story up, introducing us to the characters, etc. As far as I can tell TABA will primarily focus on Bo5A which, don't get me wrong will undoubtedly be huge as is the style of PJ's battles, but other than that and closing the story off I can't see what else it could look at. That leaves DoS with all the action, storylines, key character introductions and main locations! However looking at the middle story within the LotR trilogy, The Two Towers, it was quite a different story. TTT was the book that connected all the puzzle pieces and really carried the story in to the third book. All of the action happens within RotK, which as a result has meant it's gone down in history as one of the most successful movies of all time. That's my opinion! To summarise, I think it's only rival will be RotK. I personally cannot wait for DoS, but then PJ never fails to disappoint me. He could turn TH in to 10 movies and I'd still watch each one!

going to cry when all of these deaths come down. I get bummed when Thorin dies in the book and he's less likeable, but I like movie Thorin so I know I'm going to cry a bit. It will be even worse when the credits roll if they have a great son like Into the West with similar credits to Lord of the Rings.

To say that this could be the best of the six. In my opinion, if this next film is enthralling, why does one issue such a pronouncement? I am excited for this installment. That said, I find maybe that such an explicit pronouncement might be seem compensatory rather than describing 'substance.' we shall see if the promotion overstrides the film.

Well, it certainly has a lot of great epic elements to it, and there is every possibility for it to be great. Since LOTR is one very continuous and complicated story, at the end of each movie there was a sense of a pause rather than an ending, as most elements were still in progress. We had the same sense for AUJ. If DOS includes, as I think it will, the death of Smaug it will be the most defined story-arc of all the films, with perhaps the best and easiest pacing of all its parts, and in that sense it may flow most effortlessly. The Hobbit and LOTR are both quite episodic, and the story-within-the-story of the dealings with Smaug may well be the most self-contained movie in the sextology. It's also in a way the most classic "Fantasy" section of any of the books. If I'm right, TABA is going to be about politics and war and will have some clear foreshadowing of LOTR - in a way, it may well feel like a "bridge movie". Even though it ends with Bilbo's homecoming, I think it will begin the story of Sauron so as to make all 6 movies continuous. Whether DOS will be my favorite movie of the 6 remains to be seen, but I can understand how it could be the favorite from a directing/editing point of view.

I'm right there with you. I am really going to cry when Thorin dies and at the whole final scene with him and Bilbo. That is going to be a tearjerker bar none. And Bilbo's saying goodbye to the dwarves also will be sad as he returns home. TABA will be a bummer in many ways unfortunately. I sort of get where PJ is coming from if in fact he said this as I sort of understand.

My son loves to play the ROTK soundtrack in the car and I am always bargaining NOT to have him play that track when we are out. My feeling is that the song for TABA will be of the same impact, especially with such rich material. Its not only the loss of the House of Durin, its watching Bilbo feeling it... and as Ham Sammy says, MF will certainly bring that home, as well as RA.

I imagine that Ian is excited that his director is excited - who doesn't want to be part of a movie that might better the three (four) great movies that preceded it? - and he's mentioned it on television to give a little something to the movies' fans.
