In ROTK there was one eagle who did not have a passenger. Can't Post

Do you think he was sent to rescue Gollum?

and I quite like the idea. Of course, Gandalf sent enough eagles to rescue everyone, and he wouldn't have known that Gollum fell into the fire.

Each cloak was fastened about the neck with a brooch like a green leaf veined with silver.
`Are these magic cloaks?' asked Pippin, looking at them with wonder.
`I do not know what you mean by that,' answered the leader of the Elves.

Interesting thought [In reply to] Can't Post

Of course in the book there is no mention of Gandalf and Frodo being carried by Gwaihir, so I've always presumed that each of the eagles held his own burden, Gandalf, Frodo and Sam.

When I meet with PJ, Fran and Phillipa one day (One can dream) I will ask have to add this to my list (extremely long list) of whys.

I think that is the only time I feel sorry for Gollum. [In reply to] Can't Post

Knowing he had a chance to be rescued and one of the hero’s of the ring, instead of it’s downfall. Sorry for the pun.

When I read this part in the book I always get the idea that in his wisdom Gandalf knew that Gollum would be the one that would destroy the ring, albeit by accident.

I always thought that Gandalf could see the destiny in people. [In reply to] Can't Post

Like he did with Bilbo, Thorin and Co., and Merry and Pippin in the Fellowship. Maybe he didn’t know what they were going to do, but he just knew they would play an integral part in the war of the ring.

Either that, or [In reply to] Can't Post

he was "riding shotgun", that is, on the lookout in case any stray Nazgûl had survived and gone after the three. The other two, with their burdens, would be in no condition for fighting.

And he was, literally, acting as bodyguard: as Frodo drifts off in Gwaihir's claws, notice that he comes into view, flying between them and the erupting landscape. Should there be any rocks thrown upwards from the explosions, no doubt he was there to deflect them.

Sometimes it's best not to ask. [In reply to] Can't Post

Peter, we have to talk about the Eagles
Ah, OK. What about them?
How many do you need? We need to budget the modeling time for the scene. The storyboard shows three.
Right, there you are. Three. Got to go...
No, wait! What do they do?
They rescue Frodo and Sam, you know. Come on, walk with me. I need to talk to Richard.
And Gandalf is there?
Yes, riding an eagle. It's a great image. I see Frodo having an epiphany...looking down on the fire...the red light, the music...
Wait up. Hold on. So Gandalf on one eagle, Frodo one, Sam one. Right?
Right. No. Ahhh.. No. Gandalf's eagle grabs Frodo. That's important.
Good. We didn't have that. Can one eagle hold Gandalf and Frodo?
Sure. See you.
Wait up! Wait. Peter, the book implies the eagles are limited in strength.
No they're not.
Yes. Yes, they are. It's Like Gandalf needs to guide the eagles there, but he brings two others along, one for each hobbit.
Stuff that. Gandalf rides on back of Gwathmey and grabs Frodo.
It's Gw--
Right! I got it now. The eagle said he could bear Gandalf anywhere he wants.
But not a hobbit too.
Frodo doesn't weigh anything anymore. That's why Sam could carry him.
OK, got it. Frodo and Gandalf on one, Sam on the other. Two eagles.
Right. No, don't forget the third eagle.
Third? What for now? You just cut it. It has nothing to do. We save ten thou right there.
Got to have three. Like in the book, the fans expect it, it's the magic number, et cetera, et cetera.
Ah, I get you. For Gollum.
Gollum's dead, you twit.

I had a good friend ask this question [In reply to] Can't Post

Up till then, I'd never thought about it. My heart wants the answer to be yes... it was for Gollum. Even if Gandalf thought Gollum would perish he could 'know' and it would be heartless to assume. You hold out hope for redemption and survival till the bitter end.

My head is perfectly happy with the fact that we don't know cause this is the best of Tolkien, that we get to chew on it, and ponder, and discuss and - I guess - take some responsibility for the story. Invest some of our own thinking and energy in it. And besides, I love mystery - in the philosophical sense. Welcome to the board, Woodyend.

Yes [In reply to] Can't Post

We can't know for sure, but I find the idea that Gandalf wasn't all-knowing, and he still hoped Gollum can be rescued very compelling. He knew that Gollum has some part to play, 'for good or ill', it was never said that Gollum has to be evil and can't change. It adds depth to the scene and Gandalf's character, if you interpretate it this way. Uncertainity of Gandalf, Gollum's lost chance, and the symbolic number '3'. Like 3 angels coming down to save the souls, but one lost soul is missing..

Prefer Gollum option [In reply to] Can't Post

A group of us watched ROTK on Christmas Eve and this was one of the big discussions, quite funny to see it pop up here too. Smile We came up with "outrider" and "Gollum rescue" too. After reading this thread, the Gollum option appeals to me most. I know Gandalf is much more powerful than he ever lets on, but making him omniscient with regard to Gollum's fate just seems silly and unnecessary. Gandalf wanting to rescue Gollum, despite all he did, is a much more fitting addition to his character. But this now leads me to wonder why Gandalf went with the Eagles in the first place. Surely his eyes aren't better than theirs!

OTOH... [In reply to] Can't Post

ROTFL! You got the Peter voice down ... maybe you will play him in his Unauthorized Biography :)

OK. Here is what my husband, the Project Manager, says on this matter:

"Those were the only three eagles you could see. The other fourteen were scouring other parts of the mountainside looking for survivors."

Did I mention he is a Project Manager?

(did I mention that Project Managers take the fun out of everything?)

(well... ALMOST everything!)
