I'd contribute too...but you're so far... could we hire Ossë to drag you a bit closer to Europe? Not that it would mess up your climate or anything.

Believe it or not, someone said to me after I told her I was living in New Zealand now, "Oh, that's next to Arizona, isn't it?" Let's just say she misheard me.

The original Zealand (actually Zeeland) is in Netherlands, and means "sea land" //

I've met people who think New Mexico is not part of the US . . .

Maybe the person meant to say Australia, and instead said Arizona. That may sound unlikely, but it's quite possible. My mom once told some foreign tourists we met in Yosemite that the trail they were on would take them to Niagara Falls, all the time intending to say Nevada Falls. She said it several times during their conversation, too, and never realized what she'd said. The poor people looked completely baffled until I corrected the name. These names that begin with the same letter can be tricksy.

I lived in New Mexico for about a dozen years and whenever I travelled outside it, people wanted to know if I'd had trouble crossing the border! This was in states that were close to NM. Weird.

my father's not very computer-savvy, at 89, but he tries. I brought my new laptop to their house recently & asked him what the security key for the wifi was. He said "it's on a post-it on the router." So I climbed up into the loft where his office is and found it. It was their phone number.

Do you need a passport to go from the US to Hawaii?

Travel agents apparently still get asked that all the time. HI has been a state since 1959. People also commonly ask if folks speak English in HI. That's actually a little more relevant, since there are a lot of Hawaiian words in daily use here: mauka, makai, mahalo, and pau hana (one of my favorites), for example. And there are many, many Japanese tourists, so many signs and menus are bilingual English/Japanese.
