Interesting to hear his comparison between his fur pelt and his self image as a bison. More singing in films 2 & 3. Hooray! Also wonder what those scenes are in the last film when a reaction was sprung on him? The violent row with Bilbo? And will we recognise Smaug when we see him because he has BC's cheekbones, LOL? And will there be some kind of confrontation between Thorin and Smaug? Love the relaxed joshing that goes on between RA, the interviewer and the audience, such as during the question about a potential cage fight between Thorin and Dwalin. Last I heard, Graham McTavish tweeted on this and said they had a surprise waiting for RA when he returned to NZ. Wonder what the outcome of the match was, LOL?

Thank you for posting this interesting and funny interview (very well edited by Popcorn Taxi). This is a great format for actor interviews, I would love to have something similar in the cinemas where I live.

Richard Armitage is a great actor, and he made Thorin one of my favorite Middle-earth characters (behind Frodo and Bilbo). Although when they showed that picture of Tolkien, he kinda looked like Radagast minus the beard.

design a set of ping-pong paddles for Thorin and Dwalin? I picture a shiny silver one for Thorin, with a dragon-tooth grip, a curved guard and a swirl on the paddle. Dwalin has two axe-shaped paddles - Server and Smasher.

for posting this lengthy and wonderful interview! I think I've read bits of this elsewhere, but to have it all in one place and seen live is terrific! That RA is quite something.

Great interview. I really am intrigued by his saying that Peter called Martin out of a scene (for movie 3) without RA knowing and sent him back in and when he did it elicited a response out of RA that he didn't expect. Now that is interesting.

Now that is interesting. Can't wait to see what scene it is...wonder if its about searching for the Arkenstone. (Good to see you around HS!) Thanks Kel, enjoyed it very much. I'm around. Work has been extremely busy right now. I will be posting a bit more though after the first or second week of June when things get calmer and I have the time. I thought the interview was terrific. I just love RA's interviews and this interviewer and the audience asked very solid questions and different ones (like the one that elicited this response from RA). It will be intriguing to see which scene it is and I want Martin to spill the beans on exactly what Peter told him to say..or do.

I haven't seen the Popcorn Taxis video so I didn't hear it there, but I have heard about this somewhere before - maybe from one of Peter's vlogs?? “There are some things that time cannot mend. I"m drawing a complete blank as to where I heard this before. I'm wondering if it was from the live event with Peter and Jed Brophy. Is there a complete transcipt online for it? I tried to search for one, but only found a summary of the hour video.

Now that is interesting. I haven't seen the Popcorn Taxis video so I didn't hear it there, but I have heard about this somewhere before - maybe from one of Peter's vlogs?? From Popocorn Taxis " He’ll take an actor away that you’re going to work with. And I had a moment in movie 3 – which I can’t talk about – with Martin where I was in the middle of a scene and he took Martin away, and I didn’t know that he’d done this. And Martin came back and played something to me which got quite an extraordinary response from me that I had not predicted – and that was the take. And that’s actually what he (PJ) does. And he did it to me as well. I had a scene with Kili and he (PJ) took me aside and said ‘I want you to say this, I want you to do this’ and we got the response from Aidan. And I say this; it’s such a great piece of work you just don’t know that he’s having an effect on you."

especially some spoilery parts: - About the Battle of Six (sic!) Armies, - About bringing Orcrist through the customs, - about turning horses into ponies, - about (not) working with Christopher Lee, - about Beorn and Mikael Persbrandt's performance, - about most of Thorin's acting being in films 2 & 3.

Are you able to briefly expand on the comments that were missed out? it's all in the chat transcript. If you read the transcript there's more there than is on the video. Basically nothing major. Just quips like "it should be the battle of six armies" and stuff like that..the major stuff was in the video.

Here and during other interviews, he often leans in or tilts his head or looks at the questioner with such an intent gaze .... There's something so completely charming about the way he does it. That him.

There is a complete transcript of the night on tORN - the link to the full transcript is here: http://www.theonering.net/torwp/2013/05/04/71345-popcorn-taxis-hobbit-qa-with-richard-armitage/ I dont know if there is more, but The missing bits quoted are below: About the Battle of Six (sic!) Armies, About bringing Orcrist through the customs,
Oscar: Whilst you shot quite a lot of the trilogy, there’s still actually quite a bit more shooting to do – I was quite surprised at that. Richard: Yeah, at the end of May we go back and we’ve got 10 more weeks of shooting. We haven’t shot a single frame of the Battle of the Five Armies. Actually I think it might be the Battle of the Six Armies. Oscar: Spoiler Alert! Audience: (laughing) Richard: cont… yeah, so we have to do that and also they would have edited the second movie and the third movie and decided they’ll need to get some new material, so that’s what we go back to shoot. 10 weeks of shooting is effectively enough time to make 2 small independent films. So you can imagine the scale of what we have to do. I started training again at the end of January so I could swing that heavy sword around we’ve been talking about. But I was gifted a replica of the sword at the end of the last year so I could practise with it*. I was very close in taking it to the gym with me ;) Audience: (laughter) Oscar: you didn’t bring it with you now though? Richard: I didn’t bring it with me. I surely would never have got it through security. Oscar: I would have liked to have seen you go through Customs with that. ‘Well, I’m an Actor!’… It would have certainly taken them by surprise. _______________________________________ - about turning horses into ponies,
Member of the Audiences - question: They’ve done a great job making the horses look like Dartmoor Ponies. What were the horses like to work with? They seemed far less grumpy than actual ponies. Richard: I loved my horse – my horse was called Sharmon. She and I became very close. I used to go out riding with Jed Brophy (Nori) on weekends. When we were on location we used to go and visit the horses and take them out. Tolkien describes Dwarves as not liking the horses, they don’t ride very well. Which I get slightly annoyed about because obviously I was totally in love with my horse. And yeah, they had some hairy costumes on which Sharmon didn’t like. She used to try and shake that woolly coat off. ________________________________________ - about (not) working with Christopher Lee,
Member of the Audiences - question: There a lot of Urban legends about working with Christopher Lee. How was your experience with working with him? Richard: I hate to disappoint you but I never met Christopher Lee. Sadly. (audience gasp) Well I don’t like giving away too many secrets about filming but, all of Christopher’s stuff was shot in the UK because he was too old to travel. Yeah, so I never got to meet him sadly. _____________________________________________ - about Beorn and Mikael Persbrandt's performance,
Member of the Audiences - question: If you hadn’t have been cast as Thorin, who would you have liked to have been cast as? Richard: Umm, you tell me (smiles). Actually one of my favourite characters in the book is Beorn, so I would have liked to have had a crack at him. But you wait until you see Mikael Persbrandt – it’s an incredible performance - and he really lives up to that image that I had as a kid. Yeah, he’s one of my favourite characters. _________________________________________________ about most of Thorin's acting being in films 2 & 3.
Member of the Audiences - question: This person had a bit of difficulty with the question, but Oscar helped out by rewording the question for them: What was it like to feel like watching yourself in a movie? Richard: It was really surprising. I had actually thought that I hadn’t done very much in the first movie. I thought all my stuff is in movies 2 & 3. So when I saw the first film I was shocked. I just didn’t realize what Peter had been doing; I didn’t realize the shots that he’d choose. Um, I was obviously quite pleased. Because he made Thorin look pretty awesome – that’s his work mainly, not mine. __________________________________________
