Hi folks again from El Anillo Único, there is a little speculation going, for those non spanish speakers it says that according to the tiwt(that is in english) Bain is required for the fourth block of filming. As we know BOFA is the main spot of this period but very probably not the only one. I think that this pick ups are gonna be someting īmoreīthat we spected What do you think? http://elanillounico.com/noticias/peliculas/el-hobbit/partida-y-regreso/bain-el-hijo-de-bardo-podria-participar-en-la-batalla-de-los-cinco-ejercitos/?fb_source=pubv1

I know Dain, but I don't think Bain is anywhere in the Hobbit nor the Return of the King appendice. Would he just be a made-up dwarf then ? Edit : Oh I googled the name and now I know, he Bard's son, who became king of Dale after his father.

The actor may just be needed for other scenes. I very much doubt he's involved in the BOFA...and I'd be very concerned if he was.

I would think that Bard would leave his son with the Lake-town survivors, unless he thinks that the Master would use him as a barganing chip or pawn. If Bain was at the BoFA then I would think that his father would do as much as he could to keep him out of the fighting. It was Brand, the son of Bain and grandson of Bard, who fought in the War of the Ring. Bain died in TA 3007.

An update with a few words from John Bell

In the article have added an update with a few words from John Bell taken from an interview with Middle-Earth News last year. In that, Bell says that he "play Bain, son of Bard the Bowman, a young boy ready to do battle when needs be and to protect his father". And asked if he has some mementos of his participation in The Hobbit, Bell says that yes: "I have my very own sword which I got as a crew gift when I wrapped plus my dagger I use in the movie".

It seems Bard is a wanted man in Lake-town and is chased around a fair bit. Perhaps Bain intervenes at one of these points? It makes sense he would be trained to use weapons by his father. I just don't want him anywhere near the battlefield, as that would be silly. He must be what, about 13, 14? But then part of me wonders if this is how they'll maintain Bard's character arc after his big moment (avoiding spoilers).

Perhaps Bain intervenes at one of these points? Bain does a Dernhelm, and travels to Erebor in disguise. Not sure why though - there is enough going on in the battle to shoe-horn in Bard's family issues.

There were also kids that fought at the battle of Helms Deep. The youngest soldier in WWI was 13 and the youngest person to fight in WWII was 15. And those are only modern examples!

As was said, it'll probably be a retread of plotlines we've already seen in LOTR. I'm not saying it's not true to life. A 13-year old wielding a gun is one thing but engaging with huge Orcs in melee combat is another. Something like this would be very unnecessary here, given all the drama we already have in the battle.

and it's true, but yeah I mean there's already going to be a lot going on. We also have to contend with the various phases of the battle. How are they going to handle the Men of Laketown/Elves vs. the dwarves part?

It's interesting you mention this. I think there is a danger that there will be so many involved characters - many potential silly (e.g., Dain and his ridiculous Boar steed) - that it ultimately is unbelievable and unnecessary that Thorin, Fili, and Kili and a host of others perish, yet the drama-queen comedians and inexperienced youth survive. A multitude of characters comprising our little company will need their moments in the battle. It is not absolutely necessary to a see Tauriel, Legolas, ect, fight scene, especially when that screentime could be given to our other Dwarves. And, yes, there does seem to be trepidation that the BoFA simply will be a rehash of other trite narrative. Why this recycling would be necessary, I do not know. Delve into the personal storylines of these other characters like robin hood bard and the story could lose any sense of itself and any reasonance an audience has for Bilbo and Thorin and co. goes flying out the window in this ambiguity. Bard, Thranduil, and everyone else matter simply because they matter to Bilbo and company. Sorry, but cinematically, these characters do not matter beyond their connection to our main party. Any character development past this divide and the story could be irrevocably lost.

I agree with Otaku-sempai and I don't like this news. It always seemed to me that Bard was wifeless and childless in The Hobbit. Bard was the guy who always spoke ominous and grim forboding and people avoided him if they could. Anyway, when Smaug attack Lake-Town, never Bard seems to care about a wife or a son! A Husband would want to protect his family form the destruction and help them flee from the ruined town but he act like he's got nothing to loose!

... but Bard was a soldier, the captain of a company of archers. It was his duty to guard the town when it came under attack, whether he had a family or not. There's no mention of a wife or a child in The Hobbit, but nothing to say that he didn't, and we know from the Appendices that he had a son. So if they choose to incude Bain (and Mrs Bard) they're not contradicting the book at all. But nobody knows yet when Bain will appear or what he will do. Apart from a few comments by the boy playing him, the rest is just rumour and guesswork.

Well, if Bain is in the film(s) at all (and we know that he is) then he is certain to be introduced shortly after the company reaches Lake-town. I predict that Bilbo and Bard's son will form a friendship much like the one Tolkien portrayed between Pippin and the Gondorean boy Bergil.

He`s pumped to fight, his father most likely won`t let him, he sneaks disguised and saves the day at the right moment. The actor has pretty extensive credit list so it looks like the character isn`t just a cameo but an actual supporting role. Besides, didn`t someone (RA?) say that everyone would have a big moment in BOFA? Sounds like an overkill but if it`s true than I wouldn`t be surpised if Bain was one of 50+ characters doing something heroic that`s approriate to their age/level of training.

Kick Ass, Hunger Games, any YA book/movie adapted from books have fighter kids in it. So you can`t fault the film-makers if they are trying to capitalize on it a bit. As already explained by others, it isn`t far fetched for a 13 years old boy to be in a combat. What wouldn`t work is turning him into a super fighter. Keep it real. I love the fact that Hobbits in LOTR never become Legolas and Aragorn clones as far as fighting skill goes. They are brave but they are not professionals.
