I'm not against PJ directing the Hobbit if he wants to, but I also think that a director like Cuaron could do a nice job with it. I'm keeping my mind open to the possibilities right now.

Or maybe Masayuki Suo -- I have no idea how good his English is. Both have managed to balance comedy and drama in a way that might work for The Hobbit.

I'm a bit worried about what Peter might do with the spiders, the trolls, and the goblins (orcs), given his tendency to play up the horror aspect of a story.

Cuaron would be my first choice

I love his films and think he'd do a wonderful job. He seems to have a fluid and intuitive grasp of fantasy and would do justice to the fairytale-like nature of The Hobbit. Del Toro would be my second choice. I posted the reasons why I'd like him here on Main. And a director who isn't listed, Agnieszka Holland, would be my third choice -- mainly on the strength of her lovely adaptation of "The Secret Garden."

I love the way the Muppets did the Christmas Carol and Treasure Island. But I was very disappointed in their Wizard of Oz. Maybe it's just because that's my favorite story, or maybe they really need Jim Henson. I think a Muppet Hobbit could be wonderful, if they lived up to some of their past greatness.

The Tim Burton claymation would give us the dark, macabre The Hobbit. Then once we finish watching it and feel turned inside-out at the bizarreness of it all, we could watch a Steve Box and Nick Park version of The Hobbit, full of warm-fuzzy feelings. Can you not picture Wallace getting captured by Mirkwood spiders, commenting "Cheese and crackers!" and then watching Gromit use some utterly imaginative way to free him? It would all balance out in the end, right?

Yes, that was awful. I wish I had never seen it. But we just re-watched Muppet Christmas Carol and that is just about my favorite version of that story! Hmmm...Kermit could be Bilbo, Sam the Eagle could be Thorin, but who would play Gandalf? Maybe Sir Ian could do it as the token human actor! But poor Miss Piggy would be left out unless she did a cameo as Lobelia, or better yet as an elf!

The Alistair Sims is my actual favorite, but the Muppets are a close second. Have you seen the Muppet Christmas Carol, Patty? It's very true to the story, and a laugh a minute besides!

I'm not a big Muppet fan (except for those two sour old fogies who sit up in the balcony--love them.) But I will try to catch this the next time it's on.

But I voted for Alfonso Cuaron-- as a kind of "just in case". I have no idea who most of the people listed are, but Alfonso's Harry potter was my favorite to date, and such a welcome change.
