Hooray, another quiz [In reply to] Can't Post

1. Balin

2. Helena Hufflepuff's golden cup. Destroy it, Bilbo! Destroy it, it's a Hurcrux! Eh, you mean dragons don't need Hurcruxes to live forever? Uh, well, then it was probably just a normal golden cup.

3. A bare patch, a hole in Smaug's diamond coat. Or in other words, he just revealed his only weakness. Alas, the vanity of dragons.

4. 'Never laugh at Sherlock Holmes, Bilbo you fool!' Ops, an easy thing to mistake. I knew this sounded strange. Thorin's hair? Bombur's beard? No, I suppose it's 'Never laugh at live dragons'

5. To stop breathing. He was already uncomfortable enough and the additional noise of 13 heavily breathing Dwarves was highly irritating. But in end, after considerably grumbling, he agreed to bear the risk of being shot in the dark if only they would shut the door, in case Smaug showed up.

"If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world."

Sneaking in again... [In reply to] Can't Post

1. Which Dwarf accompanied Bilbo a bit of the way down the tunnel (on Bilbos first journey down the tunnel)?

That nattily attired old gent of a dwarf, Balin.

2. What did Bilbo steal from Smaugs pile of treasure and take back up the tunnel to the Dwarves?

The kind of thing missing from his sedate and boring respectable life as a Baggins so far...a trophy! And not some lil' ol' bowling trophy, either, but a big-arse, two-handled, team victory drinking kind of cup to mark the occasion.

3. What key piece of information did Bilbo discover when Smaug rolled over to show his underbelly?

Proof that, indeed, dragons cannot make a thing for themselves, not even mend a loose scale of their armor -- a spot on the left side of his breast as bare as a snail out of its shell.

4. Fill in the blanks (two words): Never laugh at ____ _____, Bilbo you fool! he said to himself

"live dragons!" Not live stuffed and mounted dragons are, however -- like stone trolls -- still fair game.

5. Bilbo returned to the Dwarves after his conversation with Smaug, and they all sat in the little grassy bay discussing, amongst other things, dragon slaying. Bilbo grew uneasy; what did he then urge them to do?

Stop spinning yarns, go inside, and SHUT THE DOOR!

Feeling poetic again Ro. A Tritina for you this week. [In reply to] Can't Post

Though more Pig Latin is very tempting as you probably look *adorable* with your eyes crossed. Thanks for last week, and as for this weeks fun! Heart

"Inside Information: Truthful Thoughts While Reading."

Brave Balin said to Bilbo, "by the hair
of my beard, I'll go." Right hand of Thorin's.
Only shortly down would he walk for love.

Bilbo finds the cup, heirloom of Thorin's
royal hoard. Bilbo glimpsed just skin, no hair
there on Smaug's breast, a fact to maybe love

If one had a bow!...and one can also love
"never laugh at live dragons" - or risk singed hair!
Bilbo pleads, "shut the door!" The nod is Thorin's.

Our Bilbo's dear, but we love Thorin's hair.

Rats! [In reply to] Can't Post

I said "descendant of rabbits" last week, and it was supposed to be rats. Or was it the "shining armor" that I missed, because I'm pretty sure I said "golden armor"? Anyway, you've been charitable toward me, Ro, but I won't need leniency this week, because I think I know all of these!

1. Good old Balin!
2. A two-handled golden cup
3. A bare patch in the hollow of his left breast (or was it the right? Rats again!)
4. live dragons
5. Shut the front door! Well, first go in the tunnel, and later to shut the door.

Where's Frodo?

There may be a Mediocrity Bench in my immediate future... [In reply to] Can't Post

...which is fine, as RL is being a bit exhausting at the moment and it would be nice to sit and rest a bit. Smile

1.
Which Dwarf accompanied Bilbo a bit of the way down the tunnel (on Bilbos first journey down the tunnel)?

Hmm, I'm going to go with Dori, on the theory that after all that carrying of him everywhere he wanted to see that he at least got to see their burglar doing what they brought him along for.

2. What did Bilbo steal from Smaugs pile of treasure and take back up the tunnel to the Dwarves?

A golden cup, although I've never really understood why the good cutlery and tableware should be stored in the hoard instead of the butler's pantry...

3. What key piece of information did Bilbo discover when Smaug rolled over to show his underbelly?

A bare patch in his gem waistcoat.

4. Fill in the blanks (two words): Never laugh at live dragons who are still within earshot and do not have a good sense of humor, Bilbo you fool! he said to himself Well, okay, maybe only the first part of that.

5. Bilbo returned to the Dwarves after his conversation with Smaug, and they all sat in the little grassy bay discussing, amongst other things, dragon slaying. Bilbo grew uneasy; what did he then urge them to do?

Some simple trust-building exercises, to bring the group closer together and try to eliminate some of the petty bickering. Trust falls (Bombur was the only one who got dropped), blindfold walks (Nori was a little too prone to lead his partner right along the edge of the cliff for fun, but otherwise fun was had by all), tree hugging (only, since there weren't any trees, they had to settle for boulder hugging), a voice-command obstacle course (Thorin was clearly the best at giving directions, but he had some trouble with people being so mesmerized by the sound of his voice that they just stood still to listen), rappelling up and down the face of the cliff, collecting their equipment from down below, and ending with a rowdy game of Sardines that ended with them all piling together in the tunnel (coincidentally just in time)....it was a very successful team building event.

I'm tired and I want to go home. [In reply to] Can't Post

Oh - I am home. Well, I imagine that's how Bilbo felt in this chapter, so perhaps it's fitting?

1.
Which Dwarf accompanied Bilbo a bit of the way down the tunnel (on Bilbos first journey down the tunnel)?

Oh, I always get this one wrong... Grumpy?

2. What did Bilbo steal from Smaugs pile of treasure and take back up the tunnel to the Dwarves?
Hmmm... I want to say it was a coin or a crown or something else that begins with 'c'... but I've no idea why.

3. What key piece of information did Bilbo discover when Smaug rolled over to show his underbelly?
The dragonish equivalent of split ends: an unscaly patch of skin.

4. Fill in the blanks (two words): Never laugh at ____ _____, Bilbo you fool! he said to himself
Thorin's hair. Had to be said.

5. Bilbo returned to the Dwarves after his conversation with Smaug, and they all sat in the little grassy bay discussing, amongst other things, dragon slaying. Bilbo grew uneasy; what did he then urge them to do?
Flush the critter out and let Bard deal with him?
