Its... the return of the Getting to know you thread ;-D Can't Post

Been feeling a bit bored, so thought I'd do another one of these Cool

The first question is inspired by a discussion Starling and I had in a sub-thread on Main.

1. What Middle-earth name would you give to your car? (Our suggestions were Mordor Mazda and Hobbiton Honda, after I saw a car on Saturday called Samwise, it was a Subaru Laugh)

2. What's your favourite way of unwinding after a stressful day?

3. Why did you choose the nick you use on TORn?

4. This on is gramma inspired, what's your favourite way of serving ice-cream?

5. Do you sing in the shower? And if you do, what sort of songs? (Singing along to music whilst having a bath counts too Wink)

As always, I'll be along later with answers of my own Wink

*hugs, love & blessings*

One book to find them
One book to bring them all

Good for a slow Sunday :) [In reply to] Can't Post

1. What Middle-earth name would you give to your car?

Coming from Stuttgart: a Gondaimler Benz.

2. What's your favourite way of unwinding after a stressful day?

Looking for some trouble on the internet... or music.

3. Why did you choose the nick you use on TORn?

My real life name is Patrick... which means "noble man". And Arannir or Aranir would be a possible way to translate this into Sindarin ;)

4. This on is gramma inspired, what's your favourite way of serving ice-cream?

Simply lots of it :D

5. Do you sing in the shower? And if you do, what sort of songs? (Singing along to music whilst having a bath counts too )

Haha... okay... "Empty Chairs at empty tables"... in the Adele version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7SU8m9EQMwk&feature=player_embedded Hilarious, a must watch!

Passing the time... [In reply to] Can't Post

1. What Middle-earth name would you give to your car?

I drive a Twingo, and since all cars should be female ... Tauriel Twingo. Sly

My other half drives a Citroen Saxo (don't judge us ...). Based on her driving, what about Scary Saxo.

2. What's your favourite way of unwinding after a stressful day?

I like to have a good old moan after a stressful day, followed by watching TV. The usual stuff really. If it has been that bad ... I'll just take the following day off, and spend 24 hours on TORn, refreshing every 10 seconds.

3. Why did you choose the nick you use on TORn?

Because I'm clearly very unimaginative to come up with anything else.

4. This on is gramma inspired, what's your favourite way of serving ice-cream?

Lie on my back, holding the ice cream over my head, waiting for it to drip in my mouth. None of this spoon business is required.

5. Do you sing in the shower?

No, but I do pretend to me a mermaid in the bath.

too early to go anywhere yet ... [In reply to] Can't Post

so I think I shall spend some time here ...

1. What Middle-earth name would you give to your car? (Our suggestions were Mordor Mazda and Hobbiton Honda, after I saw a car on Saturday called Samwise, it was a Subaru Laugh)
Yippe Ki Yaris

2. What's your favourite way of unwinding after a stressful day?
Nothing beats sleep for relaxing and unwinding. But after that, it depends on my muse at that time which could mean anything from shopping to visiting or just sitting home and recording some bit of creative spurt I might have had (if any).

3. Why did you choose the nick you use on TORn?
In my view of things I have had some close ones! And when I am on TORn, I am often having a flavor of escapism that I associate with Tolkien's work. So there is a double meaning, at least.

4. This on is gramma inspired, what's your favourite way of serving ice-cream?
I put it in my coffee: there - cream, sugar, a bit of cooling off - all in one fell scoop.

5. Do you sing in the shower? And if you do, what sort of songs? (Singing along to music whilst having a bath counts too Wink)
No, I do most of my singing in the car because I really don't think anyone is listening (most of the time). Singing in the shower clashes with the tendency to minimize time spent there (which also minimizes water used). I'm also very certain it would not be appreciated by neighbors. I do sometimes put some of the wash (clothes) under my feet while I am generating all that soapy water anyway.

Great questions! [In reply to] Can't Post

1. What Middle-earth name would you give to your car?
Since I drive a Pathfinder, I'm thinking that translates as a Nissan Aragorn.

2. What's your favourite way of unwinding after a stressful day?
Dog walking (aka Fully Expected Journeys) to include much throwing of fetching toys.

3. Why did you choose the nick you use on TORn?
Ergh. Was looking for strong female warrior name, of which there is a dearth in Tolkien. Borrowed Kaede from Across a Nightingale Floor by Lian Hearn. Sounded a bit female dwarvish to me.

4. This one is gramma inspired, what's your favourite way of serving ice-cream?
One pint to rule them all, one spoon to find it...(Cherry Garcia.)

5. Do you sing in the shower? And if you do, what sort of songs?
No voice for singing, but will play music from the iPod--these days: J Band and Barr Brothers.

1. What Middle-earth name would you give to your car? (Our suggestions were Mordor Mazda and Hobbiton Honda, after I saw a car on Saturday called Samwise, it was a Subaru )
I've no intention of being original and will repeat what I put in the thread on Main- Mine's the Khuzdul Kia. Or, if we're looking to the dark side, the Khamul Kia- sounds a bit too much like camel really! My old car was Faramir the Fiat, but I've moved on to all things dwarven nowWink
2. What's your favourite way of unwinding after a stressful day?
Heating a wheatbag for my tense aching neck, lounging in my recliner chair, either reading, watching TV or, visiting TORN. Occasionally with a nice chilled white wine- but not always
3. Why did you choose the nick you use on TORn?
Initially I wanted to use Elen, after the character in the Mabinogion ( I am part Welsh and love Celtic mythology), but saw that the name had been used a few times. So I changed the spelling a bit. And the 32 part? Alas, not my age, but my house number
4. This on is gramma inspired, what's your favourite way of serving ice-cream?
Vanilla, with banana and crystallised ginger
5. Do you sing in the shower? And if you do, what sort of songs? (Singing along to music whilst having a bath counts too Wink)
Yes, usually some "earworm" that has got into my head. And sometimes just for the hell of it- the echoes make my voice sound better! I do a lot of singing in the car- especially in winter when the windows are closed. I sing in choirs and often learn my pieces by ear, singing along with a CD of whatever I need to know. Only problem with singing in the car, I find, is that, regardless of music genre, as soon as the music gets more emotional or louder, the further down on the accelerator my foot goes, so I have to be careful!

I like these [In reply to] Can't Post

1. What Middle-earth name would you give to your car?
I don't name cars. Other people have named my cars and I often like their names (like "Zelda" for my 1965 Dodge Dart), but it's not something I think of myself.

2. What's your favourite way of unwinding after a stressful day?
Going out in the garden and pulling weeds for an hour. I swear, putting my hands into the ground pulls all the negative energy right out. In winter, a long hot bath does the same thing. A nice rom-com movie works to calm me down too.

3. Why did you choose the nick you use on TORn?
I often use variations of "Annie" on the Web for a nick. I started out on TORn as "ritergrrl" but then decided I wanted a Tolkien name, so went looking in the Encyclopedia of Arda & found Annael. At the time, the definition was that Annael was female, but they changed it after I adopted it. I decided to be okay with that as my real name is gender-neutral.

4. This on is gramma inspired, what's your favourite way of serving ice-cream?
The classic: really good vanilla ice cream with hot fudge sauce.

5. Do you sing in the shower? And if you do, what sort of songs?
I sing everywhere. The shower is where I do my vocal warm-up exercises.

What fun! [In reply to] Can't Post

1. What Middle-earth name would you give to your car? My car is a white Chevrolet, so it would be a Chevy Shadowfax Smile When I was much younger, I named my bicycle Thorondor.

2. What's your favourite way of unwinding after a stressful day? I curl up with a Tolkien book, and read until I doze off for a short nap.

3. Why did you choose the nick you use on TORn? Well, it was actually a Dungeons and Dragons name I made up for my character. I used the word list from the Appendix in the Silmarillion, and chose "galen", meaning green in Sindarin (my favorite color); and the "Ara" is a royal prefix. I actually started with "Argalen" (using the feminine royal prefix of "Ar"), but preferred the sound of "Aragalen" better. Blush

4. This one is gramma inspired, what's your favourite way of serving ice-cream? I love vanilla ice cream with blueberries or raspberries on top! My second favorite is in a hot fudge sundae Tongue

5. Do you sing in the shower? And if you do, what sort of songs? Does humming count? Sometimes I'll sing (currently "Misty Mountains Cold" is my song of choice), but usually hum whatever happens to be stuck in my head at the moment Crazy

Thanks, Kelvarhin!!

Probably Hirgon, because it runs really well. *touch wood*

2. What's your favourite way of unwinding after a stressful day?

During the week: Delving into a really good book. At the end of the week: Meeting up with a really good friend for dinner and a movie.

3. Why did you choose the nick you use on TORn?

I wanted an NZ-themed name, so I took the name of the carving that I often wear as a pendant.

4. This on is gramma inspired, what's your favourite way of serving ice-cream?

In a bowl with a generous helping of Baileys poured over it.

5. Do you sing in the shower?

Nope.

Sauron: "Mine's better."

Can't leave you alone for one Sunday [In reply to] Can't Post

and already have to answer questions Wink.
But here we go:

1. What Middle-earth name would you give to your car? (Our suggestions were Mordor Mazda and Hobbiton Honda, after I saw a car on Saturday called Samwise, it was a Subaru )
Uhm, I don't name my cars. They are just a tin on wheels that get me from one place to another. But it is a Colt, which is a weapon, So I'm going to pick Narsil!

2. What's your favourite way of unwinding after a stressful day?
Playing some really stupid computer games, reading a good book or doing some cross stitching (now that is light again outside when I'm home in the evening, if it is too dark I can't see properly).

3. Why did you choose the nick you use on TORn?
In 2005 I went to NZ for a LOTR tour. At the end there was a party at the Shire rest (the restaurant at the entrance of Hobbiton) and you could come dressed up. But I didn't feel like dragging a costume for 3 weeks through NZ (and beside, what fools do dress up *says the one who now makes elven gowns and Smaug inspired evening dresses*). But I wanted to do something. I loved the quote "Rosie Cotton dancing, she had ribbons in her hair. If I ever was the marry anyone, it would have been her". So I bought some ribbons, made nice curls in them and put them into my hair. Costume done! And the name fitted me, so I kept it.
And Sean Astin signed the photo I have with him (in my Rosie wedding dress) with that quote!!!

4. This on is gramma inspired, what's your favourite way of serving ice-cream?
I don't like ice cream that much..... I'm more of a popsicle girl.

5. Do you sing in the shower? And if you do, what sort of songs? (Singing along to music whilst having a bath counts too )
No, too afraid the neighbours will hear and complain. I do sing a long to the radio in the car (if that counts).

1. What Middle-earth name would you give to your car?

I don't usually name inanimate objects such as cars, violins, etc.

2. What's your favourite way of unwinding after a stressful day?

Either sitting down with a good book or watching cartoons or scenes from the Hobbit.

3. Why did you choose the nick you use on TORn?

I was looking to see what was already taken when it hit me there were a couple of Tauriel variations out there, but nothing was remotely based on Kili. I couldn't stand for an Elf who isn't even in the book to be taken but not my favorite dwarf so I signed up as Kili. Smile Nothing against Tauriel though.

4. This on is gramma inspired, what's your favourite way of serving ice-cream?

Chocolate or vanilla ice cream with Oreos and and hot fudge on top.

5. Do you sing in the shower? And if you do, what sort of songs?

Not usually, but there are occasional times...

Answers....answers that need questioning. [In reply to] Can't Post

1. What Middle-earth name would you give to your car?

I call my car....my car. I've never been one to name mechanical objects. But if I had to, I'd probably name it Stybba (Merry's Rohirric pony) because "Small, shaggy, and gray" about sums up my ancient Honda. Well, maybe not the shaggy part, but it does desperately need a wash at the moment...

2. What's your favourite way of unwinding after a stressful day?

TORN! Also, reading a good book.

3. Why did you choose the nick you use on TORn?

Well....my first choice was taken, so I pondered some more and decided on Silverlode because:

I wanted a name associated with Lorien, my favorite place in the book
Its headwaters are the Mirrormere, and I love the description of it
It has a pleasing sound and I thought I could be happy being called by it for a while (good thing too, because 13 years later....)
I prefer silver to gold, both to look at and to wear, and in this case the silver is actually truesilver (mithril) which is even better

4. This one is gramma inspired, what's your favourite way of serving ice-cream?

By itself in a bowl is fine with me, as long as the ice cream is good I don't need a lot of embellishments.

5. Do you sing in the shower? And if you do, what sort of songs?

Not loudly, but I do hum whatever is stuck in my head at the moment, which might be anything from pop/rock to folk to Celtic to show tunes to Gilbert & Sullivan.

Well, let's see now. [In reply to] Can't Post

I usually name my cars "Bozomobile", but that's not very Middle-earth-ish. I suppose "Samwise-mobile" would come close.

A nice walk is a good way to unwind. Or a cookie.

I'd been in a long e-mail correspondence with a nephew-in-law about politics and religion, none of which we agree on, but he's a Tolkien fan, so I said, "Sorry if I'm too much of a Dora Baggins". And it hit me that that would be a good nickname.

I like to put cocoa powder in a bowl of vanilla ice cream and stir it all around until it gets really creamy, and--dang, now I want some.

I do sing in the shower, usually ballads or hymns. Or topical songs like "The more it SNOWS, tiddly pom..."

Oh good, something I know the answers to. [In reply to] Can't Post

1. What Middle-earth name would you give to your car?

Probably Strider the Subaru and NeekerBreekin' Nissan

2. What's your favourite way of unwinding after a stressful day?

Counterclockwise.

3. Why did you choose the nick you use on TORn?

Well, you asked...I wanted something horsey-inspired, but I also was in love with Aragorn. So I figured if I were to be a horse, it would be best to be the one ridden by Aragorn..."Aragorn sprang upon Roheryn." Yee-haw!

4. This on is gramma inspired, what's your favourite way of serving ice-cream?

Actually, you meant to ask what's my favourite way of having ice-cream served to me. I'd like it brought graciously to me by a certain Hot Dwarf, on a mithril platter. And after he's attentively refilled my bowl about seven times, he'd settle in next to me for a nice long cozy...chat. Angelic

5. Do you sing in the shower? And if you do, what sort of songs? (Singing along to music whilst having a bath counts too Wink)

Under duress. It's usually a rousing rendition of "Old MacDonald had a Farm" or "The Wheels on the Bus" or "Yankee Doodle", trying to keep NZ Toddler (fully clothed) from joining me in the shower. But if I'm absolutely, positively sure no one else is in the house, I might try out my best Dwarf voice and sing "Blunt the Knives" or "Misty Mountains".

1. What Middle-earth name would you give to your car? (Our suggestions were Mordor Mazda and Hobbiton Honda, after I saw a car on Saturday called Samwise, it was a Subaru )
Well kel there is my known motorcycle that is Manwe. That revolves around the exhilaration of flight and the openness of taking in the beauty of everything. Other than that, i have an old motley dodge van appearing to be rusting out around the edges. What name i could give it i could not fathom, beside Sam i guess because of its reliability. And the used blue dodge pickup has a hard giving utility to it so perhaps Gimli is appropriate

2. What's your favourite way of unwinding after a stressful day?
Taking a run and/or sitting out taking in a sunset listening to the birds. Maybe having an ale.

3. Why did you choose the nick you use on TORn?
It involves my love for the beech tree and the light that is transformed passing through its leaves

4. This one is gramma inspired, what's your favourite way of serving ice-cream?

5. Do you sing in the shower? And if you do, what sort of songs? (Singing along to music whilst having a bath counts too )
I very rarely sing in the shower. But i remember doing so to one of john denvers's songs.

Thanks for getting us going kel:)

''Sam put his ragged orc-cloak under his master's head, and covered them both with the grey robe of Lorien; and as he did so his thoughts went out to that fair land, and to the Elves, and he hoped that the cloth woven by their hands might have some virtue to keep them hidden beyond all hope in this wilderness of fear...But their luck held, and for the rest of that day they met no living or moving thing; and when night fell they vanished into the darkess of Mordor.'' - - -rotk, chapter III

Faerie contains many things besides elves and fays and besides dwarfs, witches, trolls, giants or dragons; it holds the seas, the sun, the moon, the sky; and the earth, and all things that are one in it: tree and bird, water and stone, wine and bread, and ourselves, mortal men, when we are enchanted."

aka. fili orc-enshield
+++++++++++++++++++
the scene, as i understand it, is exceptionally well-written. fili (in sort of a callback to the scene with the eagles), calls out "thorRIIIIIIN!!!" just as he sees the pale orc veer in for the kill. he picks up the severed arm of an orc which is lying on the ground, swings it up in desperation, effectively blocking the pale orc's blow. and thus, forever after, fili is known as "fili orc-enshield."

this earns him deep respect from his hard-to-please uncle. as well as a hug. kili wipes his boots on the pale orc's glory box. -- maciliel

Hmm...hom...hoom... [In reply to] Can't Post

1. I haven't named my car, but now that I think of it, I'd like to think of an Entish sort of name for it. I'll get back to you.
2. Put my feet up, have some cookies or chocolate, and read.
3. Inspired by Dory in Finding Nemo.
4. If vanilla, chocolate, or strawberry, serve in a bowl w/chocolate syrup and homemade granola on top. If Old South Fudge Pie or similar, then straight up in a cone.
5. I sing in the car more than the shower. Another reason I should name the car, I guess!

Where's Frodo?

"If you don't know me by now...." [In reply to] Can't Post

(she sings)

1. Name my car? uh... just not in my blood. I used to joke about an old car - that a troll lived under the hood and I had to be very, very careful when I shifted into gears that I didn't wake and agitate that troll or it would growl er... grind at me. But I have never given a name to any vehicle or attributed a personality to one.

2. Unstressing? I have some general stress relievers but if I have a particular stressful day, I'm not sure I have a go-to cure except for a bottle of Newcastle. When I worked at the inner city public school which was uber stressful, I used to sing and shout along with music on the way home. But I don't have a CD player or even a particularly good radio in my car now so that's not an option.

3. Nick? I think I've answered this quite a few times and each time the answer would get longer. To spare you any greater length I'll just say: COLLECTOR! and point you toward this page: http://www.amagpiesnest.com/...ghts/collections.htm

4. I'd rather eat ice cream than serve it. Mostly it goes in a bowl and gets eaten. I used to, as a kid, love stirred ice cream. I also like runny peanut butter on vanilla ice cream. But I usually leave flavored ice cream plain.

5. Sing in the shower? Actually I do... although I used to do it more than I do now. For awhile I was attending and then hosting regular community sings and I made it a point to try to learn songs by heart so I was always practicing them in the shower and car. Now I'm not attending sings but I still find myself singing in the shower. I think the most recent song I sang (last week) was Bohemian Rhapsody. :-) And I was recently trying to remember all the words to Mrs Murphy's Chowder.
