*Ro walks in sombrely* Welcome, everyone, to this week’s Short Attention Span Theatre quiz! This week’s quiz covers the chapter that is now a lot harder to read than it used to be: Chapter 18, The Return Journey. *sniffle* I’d been holding off on this one, but its time has now come. (If we just don’t read the sad parts, does that mean they don’t have to come true?) Hope you enjoyed the limericks last week – back to conventional, non-April Fools format this week. As always, this quiz is CLOSED BOOK, meaning absolutely no sneaking, peeking, or otherwise cheating. Any suspected cheaters will be offered to goblins for archery practice and then dashed on the rocks by Giant Eagles. Questions are worth one point each, and the quiz closes in three days. Queries or questions, please ask. Have fun, if you can manage it through the sniffles! *Ro wraps herself in a blanket and joins Bilbo* 1. Where did Bilbo find himself, when he finally awoke from having been knocked unconscious? 2. Thorin, on his deathbed, says it would be a merrier world if more people valued what above hoarded gold? [He names three specific things: name at least two for credit.] 3. Who or what appeared at the end of the Battle of Five Armies, finally turning the tide of battle and securing victory for the Dwarves, Elves, and Men? 4. What does Bilbo give the Elvenking at their final parting? 5. Fill in the blank [Bilbo speaking]: “So comes snow after fire, and even ________ have their ending.”

1. Where did Bilbo find himself, when he finally awoke from having been knocked unconscious? alone on the battlefield, with the battle over -- or -- at the 4077, as radar yells that more choppers are coming in, and hawkeye makes an insouciant joke about the size of his feet. i forget. 2. Thorin, on his deathbed, says it would be a merrier world if more people valued what above hoarded gold? [He names three specific things: name at least two for credit.] laughter, cheer, friendship -- or -- suduko, zumba, alvin and the chipmunks. i forget. 3. Who or what appeared at the end of the Battle of Five Armies, finally turning the tide of battle and securing victory for the Dwarves, Elves, and Men? eagles -- or -- a wingèd justin bieber. i forget. 4. What does Bilbo give the Elvenking at their final parting? a pearl necklace, and some fine, white gems -- or -- a pick six lotto ticket. i forget. 5. Fill in the blank [Bilbo speaking]: “So comes snow after fire, and even ________ have their ending.” dragons -- or -- run-on sentences. i forget. cheeers --- .
aka. fili orc-enshield +++++++++++++++++++ the scene, as i understand it, is exceptionally well-written. fili (in sort of a callback to the scene with the eagles), calls out "thorRIIIIIIN!!!" just as he sees the pale orc veer in for the kill. he picks up the severed arm of an orc which is lying on the ground, swings it up in desperation, effectively blocking the pale orc's blow. and thus, forever after, fili is known as "fili orc-enshield." this earns him deep respect from his hard-to-please uncle. as well as a hug. kili wipes his boots on the pale orc's glory box. -- maciliel

1. All alone and invisible on the battle field. 2. Firefly and pink sequinned high-heels. (Good food and cheer.) 3. Machine guns. (Eagles!) 4. Tips on how to be less uptight and prissy with the aid of several bottles of wine. (An invitation to visit the Shire?) 5. “So comes snow after fire, and even dreams (?) have their ending.”
Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..." Dwarves: "Pretty rings..." Men: "Pretty rings..." Sauron: "Mine's better." "Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. I missed several from being out of town, busy or forgetful. But I read them all and enjoyed every bit! I do hope this being the last chapter doesn't mean it's the last quiz? 1. Underneath a carcass, troll or goblin I suppose, on the battlefield with dead bodies all around 2. Food, Drink and.... friendship? I even saw this quote recently, why can't I remember it! I was probably too busy sobbing over the idea of Thorin dieing 3. The Eagles of course! With me at the their head, the turn of the tide 4. Oh dear, something made with white jewels I believe, a crown or necklace or belt, as payment for all the meals he stole from the elves! It will be nice to see Lee Pace smile. Anyone else a fan of his, from Pushing Daisies or The Fall? 5. Journeys or stories, one of the two

I hate the end. Thanks for the quiz, Ro! 1. Where did Bilbo find himself, when he finally awoke from having been knocked unconscious? On a field, with the Ring. which is why no one could find him. 2. Thorin, on his deathbed, says it would be a merrier world if more people valued what above hoarded gold? [He names three specific things: name at least two for credit.] Food and good cheer. And a great head of hair, which resonates particularly well with hobbits. I love that line. 3. Who or what appeared at the end of the Battle of Five Armies, finally turning the tide of battle and securing victory for the Dwarves, Elves, and Men? Beorn!!!!!!! And the Eagles. 4. What does Bilbo give the Elvenking at their final parting? Oh, gosh, I forget! Maybe it's part of his fourteenth share of the treasure? 5. Fill in the blank [Bilbo speaking]: “So comes snow after fire, and even ________ have their ending.” Stories? Hmmmm...

...drat you, Peter Jackson, now we're all going to be sobbing with Bilbo! Who would have thought, that we'd actually care about these now-lovable little guys... 1. Where did Bilbo find himself, when he finally awoke from having been knocked unconscious? In the 4077th MASH, with Hawkeye and Trapper John bending over him...no, that was a nightmare, he finally awoke on the hillside with a splitting headache, and still quite invisible. 2. Thorin, on his deathbed, says it would be a merrier world if more people valued what above hoarded gold? [He names three specific things: name at least two for credit.] A hot bath, a cup of tea (with seed-cakes), and a good book. Or food and cheer and song...but really, they're very similar! 3. Who or what appeared at the end of the Battle of Five Armies, finally turning the tide of battle and securing victory for the Dwarves, Elves, and Men? Godzilla, stamping on the goblins, and Mothra, making a feast of the bats. That was in the Japanese version. In Tolkien's, it was the Eagles. The goblins and wargs could not tolerate endless choruses of "Hotel California" and threw themselves into the River Running. 4. What does Bilbo give the Elvenking at their final parting? With the permission of the Dwarves, he handed over to Thranduil the remaining bottles of Thorin's shampoo and conditioner, requesting that the Elvenking "think of him when you toss your hair". (That necklace of green gems, which has quite a history in The History of The Hobbit.) 5. Fill in the blank [Bilbo speaking]: “So comes snow after fire, and even ________ have their ending.” Three-movie stories. (Dragons.)

Well. this chapter had to come sooner or later... Although I am still in denial. And this is my least favourite chapter, so whenever I read the book, there are parts I just skim over. I may remember nothing. (And a warning: Any mention of Thorin's hair, which inevitably will form part of my answers, might be sad.) 1. Actually, I have no memory of the place. And it matters little, for Bilbo himself did not know where he was either, I dare say, having been knocked out cold. And he had such a nice dream, when he was unconscious, of the sun shining on Thorin's hair, making it glow and sparkle, poor Bilbo was quite reluctant to wake up. I would say though that Bilbo was somewhere on the battlefield or nearby. I seem to remember that he was near or on rocks, maybe hidden a bit among some boulders somewhere? 2. The obvious answer, if this were not such a sad moment, I would say, is that he mentioned shampoo and conditioner, maybe hair oil, too, to keep the ends in good shape and help to disentangle the hair. As he was speaking to and of a Hobbit, though, his words probably ran more along the lines of food, merriment and song. 3. As a Napoleonic enthusiast, I would say that it was the sun that appeared from behind the clouds and fog, being a good omen (as the sun at Austerlitz did) and making Thorin's hair shine so brightly that the enemies were simply blinded. However, this being Middle Earth, and no Napoleon to lead troops, nor any fog that I can remember, I venture to guess that it was the Eagles making an appearance. 4. He gives him a necklace (silver and diamonds or pearls or something like that). It was simply too painful for Bilbo to keep it as it reminded him too much of Thorin and his magnificent hair. 5. Eek. Okay, I might have a couple of different versions of this. How many guesses do I get? I suppose three is the usually acceptable form, so I'll stick to that. Guess No. 1: (The easy one) “So comes snow after fire, and even stories have their ending.” Guess No. 2: (The strange one) “So comes snow after fire, and even (Thorin's) hair follicles have their ending.” Guess No. 3: (The probable one) “So comes snow after fire, and even dragons have their ending.” (I think he mentioned dragons, but it could have been something else entirely).

1. Lying alone on the battlefield, only surrounded by rocks. 2. W... w...wha...what do you mean, he dies? Now, don't you tell me Kili and Fili won't survive either, or I'd have to consider boycotting this week's quiz. *sniff* Well, I guess there's no use denying it and living in happy oblivion for two more years. And as this is one of my favourite quotes from the book I'll just answer: ''If more people valued food and song and cheer above hoarded gold the world would be merrier.'' *sniff* May I just say, how much I hope this will be in TABA. Now, where are the tissues? 3. The eagles were coming! Thus rescuing them for the second time. What would Middle-Earth do without Gwaihir and company. 4. A beautiful necklace for that gem loving Elvenking as payment for the board and lodging while he stayed at his halls. A burglar he may be, but an honest one. 5. Dragons

1. Where did Bilbo find himself, when he finally awoke from having been knocked unconscious? He was all alone on a rock on the battlefield, still invisible because he was wearing the ring. 2. Thorin, on his deathbed, says it would be a merrier world if more people valued what above hoarded gold? [He names three specific things: name at least two for credit.] Food and good cheer. Not sure about the third--fanfiction, maybe? 3. Who or what appeared at the end of the Battle of Five Armies, finally turning the tide of battle and securing victory for the Dwarves, Elves, and Men? The eagles! Beorn also came and opened up a can of awesomesauce. 4. What does Bilbo give the Elvenking at their final parting? It was some kind of jewelry or treasure, I think. He offered it on the pretext of repaying Thranduil's hospitality during the dwarves' stay and got a little flustered when the Elvenking raised his eyebrow at that. (I might be paraphrasing. ) 5. Fill in the blank [Bilbo speaking]: “So comes snow after fire, and even ________ have their ending.” Yikes, I'm not sure. Dragons? And a question...what do we get to do with the points we earn on these quizzes? Can we cash them in for fabulous prizes? If so, I'm saving mine up for this gem from Starling:

I don't feel like it. Not only this chapter is sad (and I'm not sure enough about the answers to some questions), but our company has been restructured and several of my friends and colleagues have been let go. 1. Where did Bilbo find himself, when he finally awoke from having been knocked unconscious? On the shoulder of the Mountain where he lost consciousness. 2. Thorin, on his deathbed, says it would be a merrier world if more people valued what above hoarded gold? It's funny, but I don't quite remember! I should. As far as memory serves me, it should be "food and song and cheer" 3. Who or what appeared at the end of the Battle of Five Armies, finally turning the tide of battle and securing victory for the Dwarves, Elves, and Men? Who - Beorn. What - a huge bear. These two were one and the same. 4. What does Bilbo give the Elvenking at their final parting? Something Dain gave him. I think it was a necklace of pearls. 5. Fill in the blank [Bilbo speaking]: “So comes snow after fire, and even ________ have their ending.” Dargons?

I'm so sorry you have to go through losing your friends and colleagues. I know a bit what you're facing because I've been through a small downsizing myself (though I kept my job at that time), and my husband has been through a plant closing/company bankruptcy/downsizing/restructuring and lost his job four times over the course of his career. It's painful, I know. Hang in there.

Ro, can you go back to the beginning and do it all over again? These are so fun. 1. Where did Bilbo find himself, when he finally awoke from having been knocked unconscious? All alone on the battlefield. 2. Thorin, on his deathbed, says it would be a merrier world if more people valued what above hoarded gold? [He names three specific things: name at least two for credit.] Food, and cheer and song. Someone here has it as their footer, I think. But hair product was not mentioned. Nonetheless, Legolas inferred it. 3. Who or what appeared at the end of the Battle of Five Armies, finally turning the tide of battle and securing victory for the Dwarves, Elves, and Men? Well, the Eagles came, led by Don Henley with those killer harmonies, and after they appeared, so did Beorn. Bird watching sometimes pays off. 4. What does Bilbo give the Elvenking at their final parting? The necklace that Dain had given him. In return, he was named 'Elf-friend.' 5. Fill in the blank [Bilbo speaking]: “So comes snow after fire, and even ________ have their ending.” Dragons!

We've got 19 chapters total, and this is just Quiz 11, so 8 more to go after this one. And there *is* another chapter in the book after this one! Once these are over, I might be persuaded to do another round of SAST quizzes -- covering LOTR, if there's enough interest! Those will keep us busy for quite a while.

No, sadly, he was alone on a rock on the edge of the battlefield 2) I could say, something about hair potions etc but I'll refrain- food, song and good cheer 3) The eagles mostly- also Beorn in bear form was pretty handy 4) A good ticking off for being so mean in the first place! A pet spider?! Actual, think it was a necklace of white gems 5) SAST quizzes?? Middle Earth movies?? Dragons! Best I can do today- "sniff" - will go and rewatch my AUJ DVD (acquired today! yay!) for solace

If so, I'm saving mine up for this gem from Starling: you might have some serious competition for *that* set! ROFL! And regarding the points: I keep track of them. At the completion of the quiz series, there will be a number of categories in which prizes -- mostly virtual, potentially a few real ones too -- will be won. Categories will include Most Perfectly Mediocre, High Score, Perfect Attendance, and others. To be eligible, quiz-takers have to have taken at least 13 of the quizzes. And now if I could just get my hands on a couple of those My Little Pony sets...

This is too sad to make light of, but here are my guesses: 1. Where did Bilbo find himself when he awoke from being knocked out? For some reason I want to say that he was up on Ravenhill, still wearing the ring, which is why nobody noticed him there. 2. On his deathbed, Thorin says the world would be a merrier place if people valued what things? Hmm, food, good cheer, and song, . . . .maybe. 3. Who or what arrived to turn the tide of battle? Boern in the shape of a giant bear. 4. What does Bilbo gift to the Elvenking at their parting? A necklace of pearls. I think that Dain may have given it to Bilbo so Bilbo wouldn't go home empty-handed. 5. So comes snow after fire, and even dragons have their ending. In this case it was a long tail, er, tale.
