I recall reading somewhere that the original endpoint of Movie 1 was going to be the barrels escape from Mirkwood. Movie 1 with that added back, would be impossibly long. They'd have had to cut considerable amounts of what we saw, to bring it under 3 hours and still end it there. But now Movie 2 inherits all those scenes (Beorn, Mirkwood, the spiders, the Elves, the barrel escape, Thrain flashback?).

What about the enchanted river bit? A fair amount of people seem to be forgetting about that. It'd offer some good comedic moments what with the dwarves trying to carry a sleeping Bombur along. Of course, it's also probably the most extraneous part of the remainder of the story. : /

I was listing the things it is 100% clear they could not cut. Beorn is known to have been cast, and the Carrock is already in AUJ. Mirkwood has been referenced. The Spiders are 1) so iconic (it is where Sting gets its name) and 2) already in AUJ. And the Elves have to be in. They remain important for the rest of the series through to the end of Film 3. I would guess Bombur's misadventure may be in Movie 2, but if it is, I think it is an example of the scene that has been saved by the move to three films.
