I loved the blue light in Goblin Town

I thought the blaze of blue light in Goblin Town was awesome! I really liked how that, along with the accompanying sound/shock wave, portrayed Gandalf's immense and otherworldly power. I was referring to the use of multi-colors in the pine cone scene: "He gathered the huge pine cones from the branches of his tree. Then he set one alight with bright blue fire, and threw it whizzing down ... Then another came and another, one in blue flames, one in red, another in green. They burst on the ground in the middle of the circle and went off in coloured sparks and smoke." It mentions multiple flame colors, sparks, and smoke - so that's where, to me, my mental imagery wanders off into fireworks territory. And when I picture them up there in the trees, desperate, surrounded by raging wargs and orcs, then picture them surrounded by colorful flames, colored sparks and smoke, that seems incongruous to me. That's just how I see it. Now if you are saying the whole thing could have been done with the same type of blue fire - and blue fire only - that was used in the Goblin Town scene, I think I see where you're going with that, and I agree, especially given the darkness and the overall feeling of the scene, that a blue fire would have been very impressive too.

And that is why I stuck with blue. The Animated version (and even a videogame version of The Hobbit)

stick with singular blue as the colour of the flame, to very good effect. I agree that having every pinecone be a different colour would be a bit much. But blue fire as the igniting flame, with a moderate burst of force upon hitting the ground (perhaps further prompted by a Caradhras versus Wargs incantation?) would show the powerful, though not entirely orc routing, and decisively magical nature of Gandalf's assault, without turning into a circus display. And no sparks. Just a limited blast. Really something almost identical ( upon hitting the ground) to the blue flaming blast he uses to dislodge the boulder in goblin town, but more obvious, and resulting in a conflagration. He didn't feel that way to me just because they didn't go with the rainbow of fire colors. I have to admit in the five times I saw the movie that thought never crossed my mind nor did that little bit come across as an issue for me. I thought it came across the same with the fact he could just take a pine cone off a tream and turn it into a firebomb that could be tossed at Azog and crew. Can't say I subscribe to this one.

Yet it definitely could have been better, without becoming over the top.

No, I know you didn't. I get ya. It probably could have and from a book perspective it would have been cool its just not something I personally hit me as an issue but I can appreciate how it might. Especially when its laid out how you did.
