Is it just my family or does anyone else only watch LOTR in December...?? It just doesn't seem right watching it at any other time.I suppose it comes from the movies having Xmas releases and also the EE coming in the November after.we can watch harry potter,pirates of the carribean or whatever at any time,sometimes the same movie only a week after its last viewing but LOTR just HAS to be Xmas.I take the blame for starting this 'tradition' in our house but the kids love it and with the hobbit having an Xmas connection too its made it all the more magical for them.the latest idea is,shall we wait until we've seen all the hobbit movies before we watch LOTR again..??me and the kids are not sure if we can wait that long....Mrs andwise on the other hand may breathe a sigh of relief

I tend to watch the trilogy in any season, but I always watch it in December. For example, last year I watched it in January, then in June, and I recently saw the extended edition in December. T (Which will become a new tradition, to watch the extended edition every December.) But I will watch it at any time. This year, I haven't seen it in January, and I could end up seeing it in March or April. It all depends.

I definitely say Autumn/Winter (more on the Autumn side) is the best time of year for fantasy (both books and movies). There's something so poetic about that time of year and enchanting that sits at home with stories like The Hobbit or LotR. I usually take that time of the year to indulge myself in fantasy/adventure, but at the same time I don't find there to be any boundaries as to when. Summer, for example, is ideal for adventure (especially considering my past two summers spent far from home at work in a different environ). It's all a matter of taste, really, for me its very universal, but I wouldn't argue against LotR being meant solely for the months of September through December.

But then I've watched the trilogy more times than I would care to remember. Basically, if I've got 3+ hours on my hands and I don't want to a)go out, 2)do something else or 3)watch another film, then chances are LOTR will be playing.

I just feel that it's right to watch it near the end of the year. Christmas break is usually a good time. The weather is right.
Same goes for reading LotR too. The first time I read it was around December, so now every year I miss it at around the same time

I'm not the only one.I wouldn't say it was a hard and fast rule,if one of the kids wanted to watch it tomorrow I reckon I'd say yes....but I do prefer it at yuletide.really hoping that PJ decides to push TABA on to Xmas too just to keep the tradition......and to make the experience last longer too cos once the trilogy is done and its on DVD we may never get a cinematic trip to middle earth again!thanks for the comments folks

December... Christmas break was always my time for rereading the trilogy.... then came the movies and a six year intense involvement in LOTR based fan fic... (see burpingtroll.com) ...... so I sort of read or watched bits and pieces at all hours and days but usually watched the movies all the way through at summer moots with friends. Then the intensity of the writing wained and I've retreated to watching the movies at trilogy or big screen showings (one summer, one winter a few years ago and the December trilogy showing right before AUJ opened) and recently reread The Hobbit (which is not my favorite as I find the narrative voice there aggravating).... My daughter is going to the Unexpected Party with me so has been reading/listening to The Hobbit on audio and is now beginning LOTR on audio. I may reread the book as she goes along so as to discuss it better with her or may just read bits and pieces.

You know what I do?
I have a tradition of watching the extended editions at the end of December like this:
1st part of Fellowship the day after Christmas, second part the next day, then the first part of TT the next day etc... running through the six days left in the year by watching one half of each of the trilogy each day. It's six and six and works great to finish up my year with LOTR!

but i especially love putting them on when it's snowing outside. There's just something about being all cozy inside, seeing the snow fall through the window, and watching LotR. This also works with Harry Potter, but not as much.
