Edith Can't Post

Is there any record of what Tolkien's wife thought of the Hobbit and LOTR?

From what little I've read of their life together [In reply to] Can't Post

She doesn't sound like she would have been much of a fan. They had a strong love of their children and had lots of differences. Sounds like a pretty typical marriage, with her interests being elsewhere.

There's stuff in Tolkien's Biography (Humphrey Carpenter)

I once speculated on this question...perhaps rashly [In reply to] Can't Post

"Ronald!"
"mm-hmm..... what?"
"How long will you be in that bloody study tonight?"
"Oh, not long, dearest. It's just the moon..."
"What!?"
"The moon. It's rising over Henneth Annun, but it can't be, because the Entmoot.."
"Ronald!"
"?"
"John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, if you don't come out of that room and come to bed this instant, I can promise you you'll wish you had. Of all the bloody time-wasting dithering tom foolish ways to waste your time and mine, this just about takes it. All they wanted was another Hobbit. Couldn't you give them another Hobbit? Oh, no, my God, not our lordly Professor Tolkien. Maps! Letters! Poems! Wars! That confounded Ring! Where's a ring for me, eh precious? Not that you'd remember our anniversary. Not that you'd remember anything that has to do with me or the kids. Oh no..."
"mm-hmmm..."
*Door slams so hard the house shakes*
"G'night, my little berry-o."

It sounds like he was married to The Gaffer. [In reply to] Can't Post

Or Butterbur talking to his employees. Maybe Edith is immortalized in other people than Luthien. :)

Yes, well.. [In reply to] Can't Post

Carpenter tells us that, whenever his nocturnal writing habits got a bit too much, Ronald would go and sleep in another room. They had seven bedrooms at no.20, y'know. Smile

I don't know what Edith thought of LotR; but in their youth she would write out fair copies of the Silm. tales, in longhand.
