Mae Govannen, music lovers ! For the past couple of weeks i've been leaving the ipod and home stereo on 'shuffle' after focusing heavily on The Hobbit soundtrack for quite some time. It's always nice to get some variety back in the rotation, and I was hearing music I barely recall adding to the hard drive, which is always fun, whether they are old classics or bizarre musical experiments.
One of the artists I re-discovered lately is a one man effort called Sig : Ar : Tyr. Hailing from Canada, he is inspired by Norse mythology, and creates epic, lush soundscapes which could be the soundtrack for your next Viking conquest I've chosen two of his most accessible tracks....I listen to the first one over and over again lovely acoustic guitar melodies with a slow churning pace and magical lyrics...

Another re-discovery that I love is a British instrumental group that deals out raw, pure, futuristic funk music. That's the only way I know how to describe it. These guys find a groove and do not relent ! Both of these are screaming to be used as soundtrack fodder to my ear....a Quentin Tarantino vehicle perhaps?

And it's the last two tracks that lead me to ask a musical question of my fellow TORnfolk.....do you prefer female or male vocals ? I've had this discussion before with friends, and I tend to prefer the female voice, but as soon as I commit to actually saying that, all the male vocalists I enjoy start racing through my noggin....Frank Sinatra, The Everly Brothers, Robert Plant, Luciano Pavarotti, Richard Armitage(  ), Johnny Cash, etc.
So how about you ? Man or Woman ? I'd love to see some examples of your favorites from each gender too : ) Cheers !

I love their second album, and I can't get enough of this gorgeous song, Trembling Hands. It's also a great example of a music vid that complements the song perfectly.
Now that's an interesting question about male and female vocalists.
Casting an eye across my collection, it contains only two female vocalists: Stevie Nicks and Alison Krauss. All the rest are men. You can probably figure out my preference.
Here's a lovely example of Alison Krauss and Union Station. This is a favourite of mine: Lay my Burden Down. Just beautiful.

I lean heavily toward female vocals (Emmy Lou Harris, Lucinda Williams, Enya, Lorenna McKennitt, Maddy Prior, Alison Krauss, Gillian Welch, Custer LaRue, Ruth Mackenzie, MacGarrigle Sisters, Sinead O'Connor) although there are lots of men I enjoy, as well.
I think part of it might be it's easier for me to sing along with female vocalists.
Okay, that made me think of a male vocalists I love (and love the group he's in) but I just can't find a key to sing along with. My favorite song by them: Higher Ground

Ali Campbell, the UB40 singer was recently a judge on New Zealand's Got Talent.
This is my favourite UB40 song. I remember a lot of sing-alongs to this at parties in the 80's, when the political situation in South Africa was a very big deal to us in NZ.
Sing our own song
I prefer to do my singalongs with male vocalists.

If you looked through my collection you'd see more men, but to say I prefer men singers would not be at all accurate. There may not be as many women singers who appeal to me, but I'm in awe of those who do. I can't imagine what I'd do without the likes of Billie Holiday, Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Peggy Lee, Nina Simone, Vanessa Rubin, Patsy Cline, Della Reese...in my iPod. Okay these are mostly from the past, but I also adore the likes of Bonnie Raitt, Pat Benatar, Stevie Nicks...okay, also the past, but not so distant ; Alanis Morrisett and, yes, Courtney Love provide some catharsis though Alanis has some lovely mellow songs, too; I admit to enjoying Christine Aguilera - she has an amazing voice and the song "Stronger" is sort of an anthem; Nora Jones, Diana Krall (and Anastacia to a certain extent) are awesome in that they draw from the past but make songs their own; I was late discovering Amy Winehouse, but am blown away by her; some more recent (to me anyway) finds are Florence & the Machine and Kate Nash.
This Kate Walsh song is, admittedly long and repetitive, but there's something sweet and charming about it. I also love that she uses her own working class British accent unlike many British singers whom you'd never know were from the UK. The chorus is liberating, "I can be alone; I can watch the sunset on my own, I can be alone" Here's Merry Happy

This one by Florence & the Machine is much shorter. Okay, the lyrics are violent, but not intended literally. Some of their songs are more folksy, but this has a fun pop/punk sound.

This video is probably one of the most fantastic things I've seen in a while. Plus it's gotten my creative engines spiking. I've listened to a couple other Woodkid songs as well; definitely someone I'm gonna keep my eye on.

And while I am familiar with Alison Krauss, I hadn't heard Temper Trap before. He has a nice voice and I love the lyrics to the song too....especially this line

And they are so much more than just the 'Red,Red Wine' song which most people know. I really like their version of 'I Got You Babe' with Chrissie Hynde....hey, how about that....that song has both male and female vocals, which for some reason I hadn't even thought of as an answer to my own question....
Now that i'm thinking of that.....The Friends of Distinction, Peaches & Herb, and this spirited track by Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald are a few examples of both female and male vocals sounding great together

That Woodkid video is incredibly awesome ! I watched it several times in a row just to take all of the imagery in....good to see folks are still showing some creativity with music videos ( a genre I wrote off years ago...)
BTW....the song is cool too !
ELO is such a great band....I hadn't listened to 'Don't Bring Me Down ' in such a long time ! Thanks for reminding me !

Bonnie Raitt. Listened to her a lot in the 70s. And I would add Stevie Nicks, Rickie Lee Jones, and Joni Mitchell to my list.
Current female vocalists I like include Florence and the Machine and Adele.
I heard a snippet of a tune in Chipotle's one day and was mad to track down what it was. I spent hours on the internet with almost no info - googling 'top 40 songs' or something - listening to everything I could think of. I even told my son about it when I got from work. Then, I heard it... it was playing on his Guitar Hero game. Patsy. I used to belong to a English Longsword team, Wild Rose Longsword and Gardening Society. We used to do a dance to Patsy Cline's "I Fall to Pieces" in waitress outfits. (We also did a dance with garden tools in honor of one of our member's wedding. We wore gardening clothes and called ourselves the 'Wild Hoes'. And we called the figure where we bend over to put the swords on the ground and step over them 'Garden Butts')

And I agree regarding the female voice just in speech too, and that was part of my sociological interest in asking the male vs. female voice question. Do most men prefer female voices ? Do most women prefer male voices ? At best it's an arbitrary question that just provided me with food for thought, but fun to ponder

certain men's voices make me go liquid. Women's voices rarely do that. In fact, I am sometimes almost irritated at highly pitched women's speaking voices at time. (although I love highly pitched singing voices)
I was watching a show where a young actor sounded very much like Richard Armitage. I realized just how much I LIKED that voice! :-)

That sounds even nicer now on better speakers.
I vaguely remember a sociological/biological show (by what title i cannot remember) on one of the good informational stations concerning this. It does center on the co-alluring properties that exist between the sexes.
