I've got a 5-year-old and an almost-7-year-old. We just finished reading The Hobbit together a couple of months ago, and they begged me nonstop to take them to the movie as soon as they found out it was going to be released soon. They LOVED the book, and they were sorely disappointed when (after we saw the movie opening day) I told them there was no way they were going to see AUJ until they were older -- much older. Kids that age just don't need to see beheadings, dismemberment, and all the other fierce fighting and destruction that goes on. It should be traumatizing to them -- and if it's not, then perhaps they've been too desensitized to violence already? My almost-7-year-old, Eldarion, is extremely sensitive to anything scary. He repeatedly ran out of the room to hide during recent viewings in our house of "The Polar Express"; he was upset by The Lorax about 8 months ago when he saw it in the theater for a friend's birthday party (the parent chaperones had to take turns walking around with him outside the theater); about a year ago he was too scared by an (admittedly somewhat spooky) episode of "My Little Pony" and couldn't watch it. When he was 5, we took him to see a Thomas the Tank Engine movie in a theater (he's obsessed with Thomas): he spent most of the movie straddling my lap, face buried on my shoulder facing away from the screen, whimpering "I want to go home!". He may not get to see AUJ until he turns 21! Of course, my younger boy is unphased by all these same movies and delights in them! So parents clearly need to make wise decisions based on their children's individual temperaments.

I doubt there will be a less violent edit but check out this post for some sound advice on doing your own edit. http://newboards.theonering.net/forum/gforum/perl/gforum.cgi?post=543693#543693
