Not sure how long it's been up, but there's a new consensus: Peter Jackson's return to Middle-earth is an earnest, visually resplendent trip, but the film's deliberate pace robs the material of some of its majesty.

(I was told to repost this here) The movie has mixed reviews from professional critics, yet seems to be well-liked by viewers upon both initial viewings and additional viewings. If you don't believe me, look at Twitter and the user scores(not the professional scores) on IMDB, RT, Metacrtic and so on. If the movie holds up over time, I can see this movie joining the rare pantheon of movies that were tepidly received at first, but became classics, like those in the title. What do you think?

Just look at Forrest Gump, big divide between the critics, and what audiences/academy thought of it. Night of the Hunter with Robert Mitchum. Critics hated it when it came out. Now it is regarded as the one of the finest American films ever made.
