This brings our world and that of middle earth way too close! So golf exists in middle earth?? Oh brother... When Tolkein wrote that passage it was directed at US...the reader! Wasn't it??

Hobbits exist in a relatively modern society compared to the rest of Middle-earth, so it is perfectly reasonable that they indulge in things like golf and fish&chips and the like. They are definately not a medieval society - more like 1700s - only just pre-industrial. Modern golf has been around since the 1400s, and that has its roots in an ancient Roman game.

My Top 5 Wish List for "The Hobbit" 5. Legolas will surf down Smaug's neck 4. Bilbo will be revealed to a Robot 3. Naked PJ cameo as Ghan-Buri-Ghan 2. Use of not only 3D, but smell-o-vision, plus the inclusion of axes coming out of the seats and poking the audience when appropriate 1. Not only keep the claim that Thorin & Co. ran amok in Mirkwood "molesting people", but depict said incident in vivid detail!!!!!

The Hobbit and Lotr are reflections of our world and what we are familiar with. Everything in it is based on our world of the past 1000years. From the English based Shire, ships, viking influence , music etc. This is fantasy, not archeology. If it was real, then you can say 'hey, golf wasnt invented back then'. But potatoes and other foods they eat technically wouldnt have been eaten back then either.

The little details that are from the book make this such a great film. I had an internal "squee" when this happened.

I cannot believe this was not cut. This screams like a typical EE-scene to me, and it would probably have been cut if there were just 2 films. Thank heavens it wasn't, because it's an adorable scene. Love it. The music is perfect as well.

-The catch in Bilbo's throat as he states he is a Baggins! as if he's trying to remind and convince himself of that. -Gandalf bringing up Bilbo's Tookish side, working on Bilbo, and also telling the audience there is more to Bilbo than we see. -Bilbo's resigned acknowledgement that his uncle was tall enough to ride a horse, as if he had heard it so often all his life. The timing between the actors is spot on. I enjoyed the pace of action in Bag End that some folks call "slow". There is so much content in it.

This brings our world and that of middle earth way too close! So golf exists in middle earth?? Oh brother... When Tolkein wrote that passage it was directed at US...the reader! Wasn't it?? In the book it was mentioned that the goblin chief was called Golfimbul, and the game was named in his "honour". The hobbits were described to be generally fond of games that involve hitting small targets, so it's hardly improbable that they would develop an equivalent of golf.
