Why does everyone talk about Bret McKenzie?

He had one line in Return of the King and that was it. He's been spotted in The Hobbit and now people keep talking about him. Why is this guy so famous?

Still I do wish an actual Elf character were to better utilised rather than a made up character.
I do not want what it is not mine.... I only want what comes from within....

I think he gets a lot of attention because he's someone general audiences - including people who think fantasy is silly - recognise and like. I knew several people who'll probably find seeing him the high point of the film.

Its because of the FIGWIT phenomenon. Bret McKensie was in the panning shot just after Frodo announced he would take the Ring to Mordor in Fellowship. A fan over on TORC spotted him and said "Frodo is great.... Who is THAT!!!" Hence the FIGWIT nickname. It became a sort of Internet Meme and Peter Jackson became aware of it and invited Bret to cameo in The Two Towers, but their schedules clashed with a Flight of the Conchords tour. As a result he cameoed in Return of the King and again in The Hobbit. Its just a little nod to the fans from PJ.

Because this almost sounds ironic. I get uncomfortable when I don't know if people are kidding or not. If you're not kidding, he's famous from Flight of the Conchords, and in geektown from being very pretty in FOTR and even speaking in ROTK!

Are you talking about the character he plays, or the actual actor?

I have no idea what else he's been in, but the character is iconic.

Well he is one of the few dark haired elves other than Elrond. His popularity compelled or influenced Jackson to give him lines in ROTK. Also the man won an Oscar I believe for writing the muppet song in that recent muppet movie. Perhaps people and the audience in general relate to him better than other background elves.

"It's just a bit of fun!" He's a popular actor - at least amongst his fans - and a very friendly, funny and charming guy. So a handful of people here and there, whether they know him from the Figwit meme or Flight of the Conchords, will give him a nod of recognition in the film. Not sure how well you can judge a man from a fleeting glimpse in FOTR and a line in ROTK.

it was a fan on TORN - either inDUHvidual or Arwenelf, I forget which - not on TORC, who coined FIGWIT and started the Figwit website.
Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..." Dwarves: "Pretty rings..." Men: "Pretty rings..." Sauron: "Mine's better." Look up their HBO show. Funny stuff! I suspect he was featured as an extra in FotR simply because he was (at the time) just a fairly unknown New Zealand actor that shows up to the casting call.

Thanks for that. So it was inDUHvidual who named him, and both she and Arwenelf created Figwit Lives. It's nice to have that sorted out in my head. :)

I remembered the nick of the Figwit creator, so when the meme article mentioned her real name, I was like, "Wrong! That's not her name!"
I am SMAUG! I kill when I wish! I am strong, strong, STRONG! My armor is like tenfold shields! My teeth like swords! My claws, spears! The shock of my tail, a thunderbolt! My wings, a hurricane! And my breath, death!
