if you could film the lord of the rings or the hobbit in any locations you wanted, where do you think would be best for each area? i know new zealand is brilliant, but as a purist, id loved the shire scenes to be filmed in england, and gondor to have an more italian landscape. rohan could have been done either on the plains of mongolia or the american great plains!

It's hard to imagine one country standing in for all of ME as well as NZ

New Zealand is so gorgeous, diverse, and evocative. However, I, like you, think it would have been nice if the Shire scenes had been filmed in England. As beautiful as the scenery was for the Hobbiton set, it wasn't really what I had imagined. I didn't have a particular image in mind for the other locations, but the Shire, and especially Hobbiton, were very clear in my mind. But if I had the chance to visit the Hobbiton set, I'd do it in a heartbeat

Perhaps Etna? I doubt the tourism board of Italy would like to advertise their country as "the home of Mordor" though! Shire - England Rivendell - somewhere with lots of waterfalls (I like the film design) and in a deep valley Misty Mountains - NZ, or perhaps the Rockies, Andes ... Lorien - difficult one ... I'm not sure Fangorn - plenty of suitable forests in Europe I agree with your Rohan and Gondor.
