This guy's consensus is that the movie was great...but just barely missed the mark for being on par with Lotr.

...that would be quite the geek accomplishment. The reaction seems to be very positive. We'll see what the trades have to say. Looking forward to reviews from Peter Travers, and Todd McCarthy, and of course Roger Ebert.

I wonder what exactly he means by that. It's obviously not supposed to be exactly like LOTR, so if that's what he means, I'm sure I'll be pleased with the film. It's supposed to gradually get darker over the films, so it's only natural that it start out different from LOTR.

That actually does not surprise me. Given the split into three films, we've (or at least, I've) expected the films to be much more filled - like the EEs essentially.

But I think that's just because I'm not a fan of corny comic books. The hobbit might have the same effect though. A great movie for fans, but an alright movie for casual viewers.
It never had a chance of being as good as LOTR. It might not even be that it's "not as good", but without that apocalyptic emotional weight, it can't really possibly have as much of an impact.

I dont even expect TH would be on par with LOTR. from the theme of the books so much different. PJ is a super genius and lucky man If he can make it on par with LOTR again but I nevermind if he cant.

People die an awful lot in movies to begin with. It helps if the cause they died for is heavier. Although I'm sure there will be some sad moments in the film, It won't have that weight behind it. Just my opinion though, take it as you will.

But this is what it is, really. At least, the first part is suppose to be. The Hobbit's not aiming for Best Picture Oscar. Perhaps TABA could get that, but The Hobbit's not as "serious" as LOTR, as some tweets said there were a ton of silly bits.

The Hobbit is a different story than LOTR and even though they've connected it and set it in the same world, as PJ said in a recent interview the stakes are not the same. It is, at least through the first two films, mostly a light adventure story. It doesn't have the darkness or weight of the themes of LOTR until the Battle of Five Armies. I'm actually kind of glad to hear these responses, as it tells me that they are letting The Hobbit be what it is and not trying too hard to make it "EPIC", you know? It shouldn't be competing with LOTR in that way, or treading over the same thematic ground. In the end, the six movies will work together much better if they retain their separate flavors.
The Hobbit shouldn't be a wanna-be LOTR, it should just be Bilbo's story. Isn't that part of what the Star Wars prequels did wrong; trying to outdo the first films so hard that they lost distinctiveness and character? I'm happy for TH to be a fun adventure film, and I've no doubt that they can bring the gravitas when it's time.

I'm afraid TH not being LOTR will get the film undeserved negative reactions.
I think it's possible for these films to be better than Rings, regardless of tone.

We're still getting three films regardless, so the full story will be completed. As long as you like them, what's the problem? Just curious, of course.

... after all some would rather be home watching Grey's Anatomy (great show btw) than watching a bunch of dwarves tromping off after a dragon horde.
Or some will find the better special effects trumping anything they saw in LOTR and thus say The Hobbit was "better".
So far, as in the books, I like Bilbo better than Frodo and that may pull me more towards this story than Frodo's.
