My theory is that he's black or grey, but then smelts dwarven gold onto himself after claiming Erebor. It would be a scene that highlights Smaug's vanity and helps to explain his greed for gold. Smaug's "motivation" needs to be fleshed out for him to be an effective character rather than just another Boss that our heroes have to defeat.

He destructs his own body to cover it with gold because of his greed. It's almost psychotic and if done right, that would probably make him one of the most memorable villains in cinema.

Doesn't it have the same impact?
I agree that Smaug melting down the gold would be incredible. But it's not him. Why make all the effort? He sits on it all day anyway.

I always thought they were stuck to his skin because he sat on them for too long, which is actually silly when you think about it.  And no, I don't think it has the same impact. I mean if they just became glued to his skin over time that would make him stupid for not noticing. It still works for the sake of irony but if he has done that to himself that's just more dramatic I think.

Because he's not greedy for wealth, he's greedy for shiny rocks (Smaugcares little for the monetary value, the narrator tells us). Not nearly enough motivation to ground a 9 hour story ;)

Why you (and if true, probably a lot of the folks would as well) think it's not a good thing, and you are absolutely right: it's not just a minor detail different from the book, the whole character may change with it but I guess I just loved the idea too much.

They are in shade. It's dark, Smaug's figure is contrasted against the bright flames. Ofcourse he appears dark next to them.

I am not a fan of the melting idea. Just not Smaug.
Also i havent seen the clip with Smaug, but surely its just a shadow like others have said? this is over analyzing even for me, lol.
