He's right in that it should be about the character first (I did worry how much of Smaug's actual talking character would make it to the films). Also, the idea of not going too outlandish with him. He DOES need to look like a dragon and not some alien creature!

and that is interesting. There could be some cunning ways to introduce old age into the dragon to add menace and originality. I don't think I've ever seen a dragon as "old" not even Vermithraax.

Smaug should be very old, being the last of the Great Dragons and all. And dragons are so vain it wouldn't surprise me if he was terrified of aging. I think it would be an interesting concept, and great for Cumberbatch to play with it.
