The international media has already seen the movie but because of the embargo they still can't review it. Still, here is an article with interesting facts: http://www.nzherald.co.nz/movies/news/article.cfm?c_id=200&objectid=10850436 Any other reactions?

How many significant wideshots of New Zealand landscapes. One at least every 10 minutes. Which is quite a lot. But every word you say today Gets twisted 'round some other way And they'll hurt you if they think you've lied

The bunny sled gets chased by monsters? So there were bats in that tv spot flying around Radagast! Run, rabbits, run! Combine this with the spider leg coming through the roof of Rhosgobel (as we assume it is)... what do we get?

Those will really submit this as the same cinematic universe. Plus I love those kind of shots. Lord knows the only great scene in Snow White and the Huntsman was the footage of "the company" hiking over beautiful landscapes with the sad child singing. For a few seconds, I could pretend I was watching LotR! ;)

I loved her costumes, her backstory, and some of the incredible shots she was in (coming out of the milk, or whatever that was). Plus Charlize is gorgeous. But god help me her dialogue was AWFUL. It was so bad not even an Oscar-winner could pull of a lot of it! "You cannot defeat meeeeeeeeee!" Ugh every time a character opened their mouth I cringed. Except for the Dwarves. I was actually really surprised at how well they were pulled off! Amazing CGI there. And they were the only characters that had actual dialogue and didn't just recite plot lines in faery-speak. I really like Theron, Hemsworth, and even Stewart (don't judge me! Into the Wild and Adventureland are great movies!) but the dialogue was on the same level as the Star Wars prequels :P

drives an evil character, but failed miserably to understand what drives a good hearted character. But the inability to understand that goodness is not something some people just are born to be, but something some people choose to try to achieve is sadly common these days. Only misbehaving troubled individuals get attention; it's all about the other people learning to understand that these special cases just need to be understood, instead of the special cases learning how to deal with their problems and grown as humans. Very childlish, very childlish indeed. A culture of immaturity? Why not, when immature teens are so important for the movie industry! Sorry about the rant...

Well with the Hobbit we get Bilbo, a good guy, learning to be brave and selfless, and Thorin, a flawed hero, learning to "deal with" his greed and pride. Best of both worlds!

More like a few facts from the movie. Apparently it's not even allowed to tweet about the movie before the embargo lifts. Hmm...

Both Bilbo and Thorin fall under the category of people learning to grow as person. I'm not against flawed characters (my favourites in this verse include Sauron, Fëanor, the sons of Fëanor, Thranduil......) but I'm very tired by the approach that their flaws are just a cool part of them and all the other characters must just deal with that, instead of them themselves learning to grow out of their flaws and be better people. Does that make any sense?

But isn't that what Thorin does, albeit in the last moments of his life? Learn to overcome his flaws? That's why I used him as an opposite example to Bilbo, who simply grows over the whole adventure, Thorin has to overcome his flaws.

Yes, Thorin does come to understand the shortcomings of his own personality, and to break free from the restrains of his own fears and needs.

haha we got soooooo off topic! haha TORN is the first forum I have actively participated in, and i've been only a occasional poster until today, so this is a little funny to me. Between this, our discussion of an Arnor trilogy, and a Sil trilogy, I've become pretty disoriented. None of those topics stayed in focus for very long ;) haha what an episode

I'd say we'll see a darker vision of his flaws, since in many ways that bring a lot of ruin in Battle of Five Armies. Unlike Aragorn, who always makes good decisions in the end, Thorin's demons kind of doom him.
