By the way, Swedes assume that Finns speak Norwegian. Because Finns speak (awful*) Swedish, and Swedish and Norwegian are so similar, so surely we must understand your moonspeak too? This has caused me sufferings in life. Unacceptable. * How awful is it? Whenever I get a Fenno-Swede patient, I pretend to not to realize s/he's a Swedish speaker, and just hope s/he is okay with speaking Finnish. Only one asked me to speak Swedish to him. So I had to give it a try. A moment later he asked me to speak Finnish instead...

I adore flying. In fact, I just love the feeling of being high up. It can be as little as being on the second floor, or the 100th floor - it just feels right.

Feel welcome to visit us any time and spend as much money you wish. Also bring your friends. And their money. Yours, Finnish Tourist Department~ (If we promise to make our language of bit easier, will you guys give us some mountains? It'd only be fair, you have enough to spare.)

Funnily - or sadly - I only developed my fear of flying

when I was teenager, after years and years of flying. I was about to take a flight to Ireland, very excited about the whole business. Then, sitting there on the plane, waiting for the engines to start, I wondered to myself: "How does this feel to those who fear flying?" And I tried to imagine it. A bad, bad idea. The minute the enginess started, I was terrified lifeless. The whole flight was horrifying, and I was almost seriously considering making the return journey by boat. Even since then, I've feared flying. Imagination is a wonderful thing, no?

That's quite an ordeal. It's especially interesting that you essentially brought it upon yourself. Do you not think you could do the opposite to overcome that fear now?

There was a documentary about fear of flying on tv some time ago. They were correct in decuding that what is most terrible about flying is the sensation of lacking control of the situation. This can be helped by learning to understand the crew of the plane are humans too, not just part of the plane. You need to trust the crew, instead of thinking you've been left on the mercies of a soulless, mindless piece of metal. Also they were right about there being external reasons: if you have stress, personal problems etc in your life, they may cause the fear to develope.

I think the lack of control is a major part of it for many people. Relying on the professionals who fly the plane is excellent, though, since they of course know the most about what they're doing. I'm sure it would help many people assuage their fears. Oh and yes, I'm pretty sure we three have done the most talking this evening! It's seemed fairly dead around here for some reason.
