Stuff.co.nz confirms a very SPOILER dwarf!

An article this morning on Stuff.co.nz ostensibly about some some custom jewellry that will grace the red carpet next week at the Hobbit Premiere has also dropped a bombshell confirmation about something we've wondered about since Peter Jackson's sixth Vlog. If you don't want the spoiler, don't head below the cut! Odette Anscombe-Smith has created three custom pieces for her friend Carolynne Cunningham, who is a producer and assistant director on The Hobbit. Cunningham will choose one, and the others could well be worn by stars of the movie. "I wanted to make something that had unknown origins - something that could have been made by elves, could have been made by dwarves . . . something a dragon would covet," she said. "Some of this inspiration might have been drawn from her time as a featured extra in the Hobbit films - as a dwarf woman, complete with beard." WOW! Still doesn't tell us when the lady dwarf (or dwarves) will make an appearance, but we now know they will at some point. [Read More

I imagine The wives of Bombur and Gloin will get the most screen time, so any props might be for them? I just hope they don't have fuller beards than some of the company!

Then they have none at all! I'm very excited to see the dwarf women. They've always been kind of fascinating.

We saw what looked to be Dwarf women in the background on the pre-devastation Dale set. We don't know if that will be featured in the flashback at Bag End, or whether it could be part of building up Bard's backhistory, in the DoS...

who were all those women (and a couple of little girls) sitting between the main actors during the Start of Filming Ceremony we saw in the 1st VLog, remember them?. Now it's safe to assume that at least some of them were some of this dwarf women

I kind of hate the idea of dwarf women in general

It's the one flaw of that particular race. How do you present dwarf women with beards and have it not be a walking joke? Even though it's not really a joke, it would certainly become one because of how ridiculous it looks. I'm definitely hoping the films prove me wrong on this issue. No wonder Gimli and Kili are going for the elf women.

Why couldn't they keep Aiden's natural beard!? It looked so dwarven.

I hope they pull this off well, though I think it'd work better if all the male dwarves had big beards. Nothing wrong at all with making facial hair not sexually dimorphic in dwarves. I just hope it's not treated as a joke. At very least, I hope the dwarves consider facial hair to be normal and attractive on females in a serious manner. We'll see.

Western society has a hair phobia, to be honest

Over the last couple hundred years, and especially over the last twenty years, Western society (especially American) has developed an extreme distate for any and all body hair. Not going to go into details on a family-friendly website, but PJ&co will have to consider this. On the other hand, for men, facial hair has been somewhat more in fashion recently, so that might help.

But I was trying to find the still with Gloin and the photo frame. I seem to remember neither drawing had beards and initially people wondered who the picture were of... This is all I've found so far, but you can only see the left-hand drawing: http://i.imgur.com/KcFSm.jpg I'll keep looking...

in the article it also mentions miranda kerr, maybe irrelevant but it could hint at her being in the film as either an elf or dwarf women ??

As you say, it could be Gimli...but there's nothing distingishing about it to make the connection with it being a Dwarf obvious...
