Odd article: Are Hobbits' feet hot?

http://www.salon.com/2012/11/17/are_hobbits_feet_hot/ “…So where is Eros lurking in “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings”? In plain sight, baby. Tolkien may have thought he’d squeezed it out of every conceivable corner, but it came popping out the bottom of the hobbits’ pants legs. It’s those feet, man. They’re easier to overlook when you’re reading the novels, but onscreen, they’re constantly in your face. They’re naked and they’re enormous and they’re hairy. It’s like Tolkien’s efforts to quash all sexual imagery were so relentless that the resultant, inadvertent eruption took the most flagrant, aggressive, and homoerotic form imaginable. Freud himself argued that the foot is a penis substitute, and foot fetishism is probably the most common of all the various sex kinks. (I’m not particularly prone to it myself, but there’s a flash of Viggo Mortensen’s naked feet in one of the “Rings” films, and the image, so unexpected, knocked me flat.) So the presence of the titanically barefoot hobbits is just a leeetle bit disconcerting — especially since, from the ankles up, they’re made to seem prepubescent, even childlike…”

popping out the bottom of... pants legs The author clearly has a case of the vapours. Thank you Beutlin for all the spelunking you've done today; you've turned up some interesting articles from the most unlikely places.

A very strange article indeed. I'm not entirely sure what it means, though it does seem to actually praise Tolkien for going against the "mainstream" of the necessary eroticism in epic tales. That is good. I think. There is little worse than love interests shoved into plots just for the sake of fulfilling Hollywood's "checklist". After that conclusion, the article gets all weird about feet and stops making sense. PS: Reading that quote that these feet, "they’re constantly in your face", I had the sudden and most strange mental image of hobbits engaged in Thai kickboxing. (I had other thoughts, but this is the only one of them rated PG-13 or less.)

The person writing the article notes the Hobbit feet in the films... but the films are not made by Tolkien obviously. And Hobbits in general did not have overlarge feet, as you say. The Harfoots were said to be beardless and bootless, with neat and nimble hands and feet, while the Stoors were broader, heavier in build -- and their feet and hands were larger (I'm pretty sure it's also noted that the Stoors sometimes wore boots in certain conditions). So the Stoors have large-er feet and hands, meaning larger than the Harfoots, but their bodies are described as broader and heavier in build as well, so I see no great reason to think that even the Stoors had notably large hands and feet in proportion to their own bodies.

It just irritates me, that people think hobbits have massive feet - something not helped by Bilbo in the up coming movie having the biggest feet ever! It's a stupid thing to be irritated by but, it is what it is, lol. To me the Harfoots are 'ectomorph' and the Stoors are more 'endomorph' in body type, so one is bigger but as you say, still proportionate.

I have to admit.... this is a discussion with a slant I wish I hadn't stumbled on ;) Mercy! I accept hobbit feet the same as I accept orcs chirping like chickens, an army of the dead becoming scrubbing bubbles, and Wraiths riding on the backs of flying lizardy-pterodactyls. It is, afterall, a "fantasy" world ;)
I really need these new films to take me back to, and not re-introduce me to, that magical world. TORn's Observations Lists Unused Scenes
