Hobbit Fan Club?
|
Can't Post

|
Hello everyone. I am a brand-new member of the forum, but I have been following the news on TORn for years now. I would like first of all to thank everyone who participates in bringing the rest of us all the good, Hobbity news we crave! I love TH and LOTR and have read them many times over the years. I found my pet name for my daughter, "My Precious," as I read TH to her when she was just a little girl. She's 28 now, and still signs greeting cards to me as 'Your Precious.' Several (many??) years ago, I signed her up for a three-year membership in the 'Official' LOTR Fanclub, and her name was listed among the membership at the end of the LOTR extended version DVDs. I remember paying $50 per year membership fee, which entitled her to have her name listed on one EV DVD for each year of paid membership. So this brings me to the real reason I joined this forum: I did not know where else to look for the answer to my question, and thought the TORn membership would be the best place to ask it: Is there/will there be an 'official Hobbit movie fan club' where the above membership/DVD benefits will again be available? I ask because if so, THIS time, in addition to my daughter, my wife and I both will also join, since we are such great fans of the movies. (Well, not so great that we can argue fine points about the books or movies, but fans enough that my wife will remember a line from the movies in response to everyday things: "What's 'taters,' Precious?" and so on.) From time to time I have emailed TORn with some info I have seen or read about TH or TH collectibles, etc., but have not seen any mention online. Now that I am officially registered, I will instead post anything I think may be of interest here. Thanks for your time & effort. Paul

I have my name on the credits, too. And I still have all the fan club magazines - somewhere! We have not heard anything about a fan club this time around, and I personally do not see it happening. The circumstances surrounding the Hobbit films are very different from the LOTR films so that a fan club isn't needed. When LOTR was released, New Line was taking a huge risk. The first Harry Potter movie was coming out at the same time, and everyone thought that it would swamp the box office. LOTR was virtually unknown, and New Line had to build awareness of the movies in the middle of the Harry Potter noise. New Line teamed up with Decipher to form the fan club, and built revenue and awareness through the DVD credits opportunity. The fan club membership was supported by the message boards, and Decipher was selling merchandise. The Hobbit movies don't face the same challenges. They are a very well-known commodity and one of the most-anticipated movies of the year. WB doesn't need a fan club, and putting fan names on the DVDs is just an extra expense without a measurable benefit (at least from the studio's perspective).

Thanks, Entmaiden, for the welcome and reply. I can fully understand your explanation. I never thought about it as a way to spread the word about the movies. I just saw it as the production company throwing fans 'a bone' (putting their names on the screen in return for support). I guess it boils down to 'ego' wanting to see our names attached to the greatest movie series of all time! The most important thing is not our names up there, but the movie up there! I just didn't want to miss out on an opportunity, if there was to be one. I knew someone here would know all about it. Thanks again. And I also still have those club magazines!

Especially since it also gave us so much more great music from the magician, Howard Shore.
I really need these new films to take me back to, and not re-introduce me to, that magical world. TORn's Observations Lists Unused Scenes

My husband and I are on the fan club credits too, but like Entmaiden said, I don't expect them to be available this time around either. I'm much more of a fan of LotR than of The Hobbit, do given the choice I would have wanted to "co-sign" my LotR fanship rather than these movies. Her explanation is very probable, although it never occurred to me that the studio didn't make money from our membership fees, but I can see how that would be the case, and therefore not necessary to do. Hope you will love the movies. Stay with us as we praise them or rake them over the coals, whichever the case may be.

...but would have been nice to do. I like what I'm hearing of the soundtrack already. Some reference to FOTR opening in the first track...
