ok maybe im being a bit obssesive, but in the fotr prologue (which is the best part of all the films IMO) bilbo (ian holm) in the gollums cave scene has a dark coat and bright waistcoat underneath, but in the hobbit trailer cave scene bilbo (freeman) has a red coat and dark waistcoat continuity error? lol

For better or worse, it must have been a conscious decision. Doesn't really bother me, if I'm honest.

... it's been revealed that PJ doesn't really care (at least on this point) about continuity.

It's because of the RED camera. The original green colour didn't look good on it, so they had to change the colour. It's in one of the interviews somewhere.

My best guess would be Empire Magazine, but I would only rate myself a 50% chance of being correct.

The Bilbo we see in the prologue for FOTR is just Galadriel's image of him, a re-cap of the Middle-earth events channeled through her that may not be 100% accurate.
The greatest adventure is what lies ahead.

It isnt that bad, lol. I would bet a million pounds it is what people on IMDb will use as something to show how the hobbit movies suck though, lol.

I'm pretty sure we can accept a different colored waistcoat.

Bilbo is played by another actor in this scene than in the FOTR prologue! Funny nobody mentioned that before

I like your explanation, also who really cares the movie is still going to be amazing even though Bilbo just decided to change his wardrobe around.

Ngila Dickson did some great work, but I think Ann Maskrey is a better designer. Already I can tell that her fabric choices are much classier and nice to look at. I particularly like the slight change in the elven costumes.

My understanding is that the color red helps have Bilbo stand out as a "fish out of water" in the wilderness. There's little less "camouflagey" than red! That is much more important from a visual storytelling perspective than continuity with a 2-second flashback from FOTR. IMO, this is an example of smart storytelling on PJ's part.

yes of course its a visual cue to make him stand out. i wasnt really being that serious ;) though i would have thought hobbits as described by tolkien would want to be a little more discreet than wearing bright red for when wanting to disappear for example!

Don't get me wrong, I love Ian Holm as Bilbo. I just think that if Holm is in The Hobbit as older Bilbo, then Freeman should be in FOTR as younger Bilbo. A lot of people think that's sacrilege, but can't I love both of them equally?
