I read that the deadline is 8 days before the premiere, (on the 208). This means it should be one on the 20th, which is a week away

This reminds me of the one documentary that was on the RoTK EE DVD, where they talked about how when it got closer to the deadline, PJ kept piling on MORE special effects, so that as the date loomed closer the number of effects to be edited kept going up and up, not down! PJ kept thinking of things to add. Those poor artists! They must have been living on pure adrenalin by the end.

They are most assuredly in the "finishing" stage of post.
At this point the duration of the shots and their sequence are locked.
They are most likely doing the following:
- Final VFX plates are being delivered for already locked shots
- Sounds mixing
- Color timing/grading
Middle Earth is New Zealand!
