With 4K miniatures wouldn't have looked very good on screen, so it's an understandable decision.

Yes, I think the old analog photographic film was around 6K (as an average)

Resolution on analog film depends on exposure so it's an average. If I rememeber correctly, the (analog) IMAX format is around 10K (average).

It seems large sets and prosthetics also don't look very good with 4K either. What else does 4K ruin, I wonder?

What large sets and prosthetics are you looking at?

'cause the stuff I've seen looks fabulous.
-Tim came by. Tim! If you had heard only a quarter of what I have heard about him, and I have only heard very little of all there is to hear, you would be prepared for any sort of remarkable tale.

Oh, one surprising change I have noticed. Shoes are optional in New Zealand and most days Peter shot LOTR barefoot as a hobbit. But on The Hobbit filming he was always well shod, padding through the leaf mould and rubble of the sets in regular footwear. Lets hope...that he didn't get cold feet. *ba-dum tishh*
a possible "cartoonish" CGI feel to it .. We've already seen Rivendell looking just as good as it did as a miniature, and I'm yet to see anything that would suggest obvious CGI in the goblin caves, either. I don't think that you need to be concerned. Especially when Jackson keeps using practical sets whenever he can.
