Perhaps a group of Fimbuls already famous "hunter-orcs"? They look great and very LOTR-like but on the other hand great! :)

The orcs look phenomenal, full on Lurtz-level awesome. It's great to see the work of Richard Taylor's incredible practical effects and make up on display. The stuff his guys do never ceases to amaze.

You can disagree with Weta's designs with regard to changes to Tolkien's descriptions, but they're always creative! As an artist I can't complain about anything they come up with. Also, I'm loving the slight changes to the female elf costumes. Ngila Dickson did some great work on LOTR, but I never really liked the necklines she used for the elves. These new ones are more flattering. The troll designs are VERY Alan Lee-esque!

Love these! It's amazing how this film has a habit of throwing up good news then worrying news then good news then worrying... but I think these images are great. Loving the fact that we'll see some consistency with the LOTR orcs and the trolls are incredibly well-thought-out imo - similar enough to the trolls from the trilogy but different enough for their role in The Hobbit to feel natural. Very nice.

Already liked the Elven costumes in LotR, but it always bothered me a bit how they looked like a mash-up of pseudo-Asian and Medieval European dresses with some Ancient Greek thrown in the middle. Now they have a clear style, just like all the other cultures. And that style suits their architecture and other designs.
But every word you say today Gets twisted 'round some other way And they'll hurt you if they think you've lied

I love the new designs for the Elven costumes. The velvets were lovely, but it's nice to see some different textures and heavier material for the outfits.

The stone ones in FotR. These are a lot better, I really love them. But just the fact that they're different is going to annoy me a little.

But I'm not liking the Dol Guldur orcs, who look like rehashes of the uninspired guys in Halloween costumes we saw in LOTR. The Misty Mountains goblins are looking excellent, though.

And I can only admire your attention to detail. In all honesty, it doesn't really bother me and I might be more annoyed if they felt obliged to use return to the old designs just because they were briefly used a decade ago. I just hope PJ doesn't do a Lucas and meddle with the original films...

"Guys in Halloween costumes"? Really?

You say this often, but the make-up in the trilogy is pretty seamless. It's a bit of an insult to the first-class make-up team from the trilogy to compare their countless hours of work to a simple Halloween costume.

Shouldn't be anything insulting about that! The make-up is obviously not as shallow and amateur as a typical Halloween costume and mask. But IMO, the effect is the same. They look like guys is really good costumes!

I don't know why are you saying this. I see the same trolls as "Bilbo's Trolls". In fellowship they are 60 years old stones! Who knows what time, rain, etc... make to details, but they are the same designs just ALIVE this time.

The Orcs are FANTASTIC! Easily my favorite Orcs I've seen. In fact, they're the first ones where I haven't thought to myself "uh.....maybe I'll like them on screen...." They. Look. AWESOME!!! We didn't get enough cool Orcs after FotR! Seemed like it was all big hulking Uruks and Uruk Hai except for a couple like Sharku. I can't wait to see these guys in action.

Of course they are not the same. The FOTR trolls are stone and the Hobbit trolls are alive. Maybe things look different when they turn to stone.

The more I like them!!! These images are proof that movie won't be ENTIRELY made up of GCI marvels. I'm nervous about Goblin Town and the cartoon-like orcs we see in the trailer, but granted, they're only in super fast shots, so maybe in context they'll be awesome. Pulling the dwarf up by the staff/Bilbo fencing (not to mention leaping Wargs) make me groan a little, as does knowing that the majority of filming was on sets instead of on-location/location sets. But these images, especially the Orcs, give me hope for at least some of FotR's gritty realism will leak into AUJ. I'm crossing my fingers that the tone of the movies will progress like the characters themselves do, and TABA will be LotR-style excellence. I'm ready to like a more colorful, kid-friendly AUJ, but now I know they'll be at least teensy bit scary/earthy. AHHHHHHHH I'm so excited. btw, yes I'm aware that most of the action in this movie takes place underground/in trees and not in castles/open battlefields like LotR, so it makes sense form them to use studio sets and green screen as opposed to on location. Again, hopefully this will change once they arrive in Thurandil's palace. But every time I think of Mirkwood I get flashbacks of the overlit, obviously studio Fangorn scenes, which account for some of my least favorite cinematography of the original trilogy.
