In today's Screencap of the Day, we take a looksie at Merry and Pippin's Fangorn retreat.
1.) Any thoughts regarding the balance and contrast of the shot, such as the formation of the trees or the sunlight? Or more?
2.) Although Merry is in a brief state of "distress" or "worry", should we as an audience feel the same? Taking into account the setting and the attitudes of both characters, what sort of mood is being instilled? Danger? Peace? Irony, perhaps? Anything else?
3.) Putting yourself into the... feet of the hobbits, how would you behave in this scenario?
4.) Any other thoughts/comments?

I have not seen the extended edition shots too much, so the very green tone of this shot is really striking to me -- I tend to think of Fangorn as blue and dark, more than green, given that most of the TE shots of Fangorn are in that color palette.
This one looks like it should be in a frame in an art museum, as do so many of the screencaps (to me) -- it's really beautiful, like a landscape painting.
I like the very small image of Merry in contrast to the large trees, and how they don't tower over his as much as sort of engulf him. That captures the book sense of Fangorn being stuffy and smothering for me.
I wish the films had had more time to linger in Fangorn and Lorien -- we get glimpses of those aspects of Middle Earth, but not much more. A mini series that could do several episodes set in each of them would give the filmmakers a lot more time to explore the history and depth found in each of those places..

I find it almost like a 'light at the end of the tunnel' effect. The light is away from you, not right up close (as is the case for a lot of shots in LOTR)

I think isolation from the happenings and events in the real world... they are in a sanctuary away from the darkness, pierced by rays of light. This shot in particular is not entirely 'peaceful' per sé, but it has a sense of stasis and enigma.

I'd go WOW at the old foilage

I find it pretty clever that Merry is pictured as far in the distance, and is dwarfed by the trees of Fangorn. He is miniscule and therefore maybe his role symbolically is diminised. To me it implies that yes their fight for good in this world was important, but the large part of middle-earth was unaware to an extent of the growth and threat of Sauron. However the dark elements of this shot do give an air of uncertainty too...
OK I'm overthinking now :P

I bet it happens when I'm not around, too, but it seems like there's always the words "art" or "painting" floating about SCOD, namely ones that I choose  ... and that is one of the reasons I chose this one, I just didn't want to flat out say it.
More on topic, I would agree on the blues, but when reading I don't think I've ever thought of any particular color, so to speak. I usually just sense darkness in general, with bits of light (generally gold) here and there.

I don't think there's such a thing as overthinking - those are some interesting ideas, for sure. I definitely agree with the sanctuary element, not that it goes unscathed, of course, but it's there.
