48 fps theaters announced for 'Hobbit,' available in 3D only

Theaters, at least some of them, where fans can experience The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey in 48 frame per second (instead of the decades old 24 fps of traditional film) have been announced for Regal Cinemas. The announcement also says that all 48 fps screenings will be in 3D. It is not known if that pertains only the Regal Cinemas or if that will be universally true. (Editor's note: I hope not!) Many states are not listed and Regal is not the only theater chain that is updating its projection equipment to show director Peter Jackson's Hobbit films as they were shot, in 3D at 48 fps. But, when tickets go on sale November 7, Regal, at least for now, has given consumers the best information about how The Hobbit will be displayed. The post announcing the high frame rate 3D screenings explains to potential consumers the reason behind the new technology and Jackson's efforts to shoot the films in a new way. It is careful to point out that viewers will be able to watch the film in the 24 fps, stating viewers can see it in 2D, 3D, IMAX, IMAX 3D and "HFR 3D," the term it uses for 48 fps screenings. (Most everybody else calls it 48 fps, but perhaps that will be confusing when James Cameron shoots at 60 fps so it is branding a term to cover both.) To read the entire explanation from Regal and to see its cinema listing, click here on a page they title "The Hobbit 48." (Yes, Regal we are available for branding consultation!) We will post more theater and chain information as it becomes available and more on the technology behind these films in the weeks leading up to its opening. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will be released in the U.S. December 14 with slight variety for markets around the world. Dolby Atmos, a revolutionary new sound system for theaters is also a possibility for The Hobbit but no details of participating locations are available.

. . .ANCHORAGE, Alaska gets the Hobbit in 48fps, but someone near a little town called Chicago is out of luck ?!?!? Did I miss something? Anybody in the Chicagoland area know of a theatre playing the Hobbit in 48fps?

I'll probably check it out once in that one, and then see it in IMAX 3D, and maybe a 3rd time in regular old 2D if I like it enough.

The theaters in Massachusetts are quite a hassle to get to and are right smack dab in the city, so a more straight shot option would be best.

I'm from Chicagoland too and I freaked out for a moment until I read that's only a handful of the 300-400 more to come. A must-see showing that is on my list is at 3d 48fps with Dolby Atmos (probably will be at the ShowPlace Icon theater in Chicago)
"'Ai! ai!' wailed Legolas. 'A Balrog! A Balrog is come!' Gimli stared with wide eyes. 'Durin's Bane!' he cried, and letting his axe fall he covered his face. 'A Balrog,' muttered Gandalf. 'Now I understand. What an evil fortune! And I am already weary.''

Hello, I finally came out of Lurkwood to post this. (har har :p) I was going to make a new thread asking about this, but I found the following page at Cinemark: http://cinemark.com/cinemark-hobbit-advance-tickets Which, in turn, has a Hobbit "HFR" FAQ, found here: http://cinemark.com/Cinemark-Hobbit-HFR3D-FAQ Looks to be 3D HFR only. Really disappointed; wanted to try it out 2D. :( I've emailed them asking for confirmation, so I will share it if anyone's interested.

Sorry, I should have added that Cinemark mentions also having a LotR marathon, including a free trilogy marathon "commemorative lanyard and badge" while supplies last. I wonder if AMC will follow suit.

but it has theaters in only 37 states. There will be other theaters with 48 fps capability. By the way, fps means "frames per second" as is a universal measure of how fast the film moves through the exposure gate. "HFR" means "high frame rate" and is specific to these new shooting speeds above the sound-era standard of 24 fps.

Both of the big theaters in my town have it--I thought we were "Smallbany" (what the students from NYC call us ). We must be a bigger deal than I thought. There's only 1 IMAX screen though--at Crossgates. Which means that for the midnight showing, I'm not going to have a choice--it's 3D 48 and not 2D. Oh well!

According to their Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/SeattleCinerama): "We're geeking out pretty hard right now... just received confirmation that we will in fact be showing the 3D 48fps version of THE HOBBIT! Tickets will officially go on sale Nov 7!" There seem to still be questions about the sound (per the comments).

So that when it comes nearer to the time, people know exactly which will be showing the film/s at 48fps. TORn could then post it on the homepage. I'd volunteer if no-one else wants to ...

The name of it is The Hobbit in 48fps and it's set to Public, though I'm not really sure how one would find user made maps. I'll be updating it as often as I can. EDIT: Edited formatting.
