Cliff Mass (meteorologist) says it has the potential to be bigger than the famous "Perfect Storm." Here's some helpful advice for those who live in the storm track. My niece lives in NYC. She's going as "Frankenstorm" to a Halloween party tonight. Then buying extra candles & food.

But we were planning to visit Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia, beginning this Tuesday---the day the storm's supposed to hit just up the coast from there. If nothing else (and there's a lot else) the airlines will be in chaos. When the Gaffer called the hotel last night to cancel, the woman on the phone said, "Another one bites the dust." Ah well. At least it's supposed to be a pretty week here in Texas. I hope everyone in the path of the storm stays safe and dry!

The tropical storm from summer 2011 left me without power for almost 5 days. I'm not really any more prepared than I was then, there's not much I can do, I live in top of a mountain in the middle of nowhere :P Hope everyone weathers this one safely!

has already girded themselves in anticipation of this storm. They were without power for nearly 4 days when the last big storm came through, so they are better prepared this time... they hope ;) This is going to be a scary one.

so I'm all set, although your advice is perfect! Seriously, though, we've got a supply of no-need-to-cook food, and hopefully Geeky Son can get a cannister or two of fuel for our camp stove tomorrow, along with a block of ice for the cooler. We'll fill up the water jugs and bathtub (as our well requires electricity for pumping), charge anything that requires charging, fill up the cars' gas tanks... We were out for a week with Hurricane Irene. Fortunately the town's middle school, which is a short distance from us, has a generator, and becomes the emergency shelter - and offers hot showers. My main concern is those living in the town's beach areas, the flooding may get nasty!

if the flash-flooding (stupid road grading!) is too much for our little storm grate to handle all at once. We also have secondary run-off channels, but they need temporary barriers for guidance or regular maintenance checks. I don't have high hopes for the footbridge staying in place, but it needs to come out for repairs anyway. Now, if all the trees will kindly stay upright, and not drop any unfriendly limbs on anyone or anything... ;) And the wind doesn't blow the doors in... :/ Judging by the stores around here, people are taking the storm warnings very seriously this time. Everybody hang on tight, be smart, and hope!

considering there are mods in New Zealand, California, Norway, Colorado . . . in fact, I'm not sure ANY of them are in the storm path.

that NYC public transportation is being shut down, and that anyone who's dependent on it should be where they have to be by 7:00 PM, which is when the process will begin. The PATH trains between New York and New Jersey are also shutting down. This sounds like it may be big enough that it's possible we might not get mass transit back again until Tuesday or even Wednesday. I've already been notified that my workplace is officially closed tomorrow. This could be really bad, and the water is already going over the seawall here on Eastchester Bay.

It's the greater NYC area that I've been most worried about for several reasons. May the Valar turn her aside!

And there's already flooding in low-lying areas - even though we've had no rain yet! It's the water churning into Long Island Sound. Mandatory evacuation if you're within 4 blocks of the coastline (I'm in the north end of town, 3 miles from there). Non-essential personnel are to stay home tomorrow. I think we've all learned from Hurricane Irene last August - and this is supposed to be far worse.

I'm thinking we need an army of Ents to help reinforce our many large, mature trees, most still hanging onto their leaves. I have been bargaining with the very tall oak (including my neighbor's massive old oak), maples, and pines in my yard and otherwise cajoling them to just shed leaves, small twigs, and branches when the winds are in full force tomorrow. Batteries at the ready...

I feel like I did everything I could to prepare, and I was extra vigilant because Mr. H.H. is away. If anything goes wrong (can't get garage open, any problems with the natural gas), I'll be responsible for it myself, but I think the storm will be much worse elsewhere. All of you stay safe!

The area weathermen went from "bull's eye!" to a north o' here hurricane eye model, but the network went from the north o' here model to what I'll call the "Aiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!!!" model. I really don't like that one! And I fear that much that was, will be lost in the historic districts. Better that than lives, though!

and the eye is heading straight for you now... At 10:00 we have sustained winds of 30, gusts to 45, and flooding along the beach roads, but this is just the appetizer. Folks are wisely getting to the town shelters. What's your current status?
