"'Ai! ai!' wailed Legolas. 'A Balrog! A Balrog is come!'
Gimli stared with wide eyes. 'Durin's Bane!' he cried, and letting his axe fall he covered his face.
'A Balrog,' muttered Gandalf. 'Now I understand. What an evil fortune! And I am already weary.''

Nice to see something new! [In reply to] Can't Post

Now, we discussed endlessly before when vlog 1 was released as to who said "In a hole in the ground, there lived a Hobbit."

PJ confirmed it was Freeman in vlog 1. This definitely sounds like Ian though!

Very good [In reply to] Can't Post

As far as tv spots go. I wasn't hoping for much. It was a nice little promo. And I loved hearing "In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit."

I watched it twice and couldn't figure it out. So annoying.

I hope they'll also release an ad where they show the competency of dwarfs. [In reply to] Can't Post

Had i not known the story i would have thought they are just good for throwing parties and making jokes. Why don't they show them in some serious situations, point out what great fighters Dwalin or Thorin are for instance? It's frustrating. I don't want people to think this is just some funny, kiddy stuff.

All the more serious stuff is in TABA and DOS though [In reply to] Can't Post

The first half the book is light-hearted, so it's not surprising the first film is as well.

Here are the FOTR TV spots for comparison. They give very little of the story away as well.

Happy to help Smile I didn't understand it myself the first couple times--it's all pretty disjointed after "In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit"

It's just striking how much cooler the LOTR ads were. [In reply to] Can't Post

Yes, i know, the book is pretty lighthearted and not as epic as LOTR but they do find themselves in hairy situations in the first film. There surely is material that they could show to illustrate some of the more tense, serious moments.

The Bag End scenes look absolutely lovely (especially the Gandalf-Bilbo conversations.) And Gollum is more vivid than ever.

I agree [In reply to] Can't Post

Thinking back on it I think PJ said that the VB was Freeman reading it at the script reading, makes sense he would read old Bilbo since Holm wasn't there.

Love it!

Tension [In reply to] Can't Post

???

Maybe if they had just included something like:
  • Bilbo being picked up by a troll
  • The company being chased by a mob of orcs
  • Bilbo being attacked by an armed goblin
  • Bilbo using a sword to defend himself against a screaming monster
  • Gandalf in a burning tree
  • A bunch of demon-wolves chasing the party
  • Giants trying to knock everyone off the edge of a cliff in the middle of a raging thunderstorm

I think this is where the "tone problem" comes into play. [In reply to] Can't Post

They could be in a huge amount of peril in these films, but it wont be "end of the world evil" sort of peril. It will be more action/adventure peril (at least for AUJ)
