A great big Bolg (picture, that is)

Thanks to Tolkiendrim.com and Pierre-Yves Le Gall for higher-res images of Bolg from some calendar that I can't get a hold of myself :-) Closeup of face Upper body Tolkiendrim has the rest of the gruesome rascal too. These new images cast a shadow of doubt on my speculation that Bolg is only wearing the beard of his victims. It looks like it is growing from his face in the few spots that aren't covered, and matches his one remaining eyebrow (dude looks like roadkill). The toy version of Bolg also makes it appear that it is a part of him, but I wasn't going to dismiss my hope based on that alone. To me this is a shame since I loved the idea of a visual reminder that the orcs are the bane of dwarves and vice versa. It was a great way of adding insult to injury.

I first want to see him in action. :P I guess I'm having a hard time adjusting to his appearance. I'm so used to the orc design from LOTR.
"'Ai! ai!' wailed Legolas. 'A Balrog! A Balrog is come!' Gimli stared with wide eyes. 'Durin's Bane!' he cried, and letting his axe fall he covered his face. 'A Balrog,' muttered Gandalf. 'Now I understand. What an evil fortune! And I am already weary.''

I'm still betting the whole face, beard included, is a glued/sewn/bolted on.

If anything, giving old Frankenstein's monster here a full 'do and beard really serves to differentiate him from the other orcs. Not only does he stand out amongst the other prominent orcs in the Trilogy, he also might stand out amongst the Goblins who'll appear in these Hobbit films.

Bolg has to be the scariest looking creature out of TH, and possibly in the LOTR trilogy as well. I think he is genuinely frightning. I like it.

not only the beard was bolted on, but whole sections of the dwarven face as well, hence the eyebrow. You can see on his brow where the dwarven scalp ends and there is also a visible flap on his nose.

I'll reserve judgement until I see him in action. Also, that beard may actually be his own regular white beard that's gotten reddish from his victims' blood.

When I saw the first (very small) images of Bolg I thought he looked a bit too unorcish... but I also ever said that I wanted to wait untill we see the first close-up of his face. Now we've got one and I have to say: He still looks different than the LOTR orcs BUT I can see the orc in him. He looks terrific, scary and I really like his design! I also can recognize Conan Stevens face within the mask. Very Frankensteins Monster like His whole design/outfit/face looks very patched-up! Great idea! I'm looking forward to see him in action!

But I must say I'm starting to like the look. Now I've seen a close up of the face he seems more real than before. Probably because of the eyes, which give him a more human-like appearance.

After looking at his proportions I noticed that his head looks proportional to his body small. Compare this fact to the Goblin-design. Their heads look proportional to their bodies even bigger.

In terms of creativity and artfulness, Bolg looks great...for an orc chieftain. The actor is really intimidating on his own, I remember seeing him in game of thrones as G.Clegane and oh man, you wouldn't want to mess up with him! So, there is a strong possibility that PJ has instructed to set loose all the brutality in him...the result should be, well, Brutal.

Just wondering (given your post), do you know if Jackson has ever stated that he thinks there is a difference between orcs and 'goblins'? Actually does anyone know if Jackson ever mentioned this? I've never watched any of the DVD commentary or read a lot of interviews with the filmmakers.

I agree that the character looks like a worthy antagonist... I'm just not too sure about the feline appearance. It reminds me to much of a lion. Maybe that will change when I actually see him talk and move

Well I´m agree with you about the beard but to me, it has not the right blood tone that it should, look at his mouth and then the colour of the beard if it was blood. It looks to me to some punky people that colours his air, I dont like Bolg´s beard. And about Bolg´s head, if Azog as beheaded, Bolg is nearly, man those pieces of metal are brutal... And about THE BEAR, I´m strong in te opinion that he is wearing bear claws on his shoulder and bear bones in the resto of his costume. Did you look his size comparing to Gandalf? the same size of Beorn, it is not hard for me to see Bolg as a bear killer.

If you take a look at the reverse of the Bolg action figure you can quite clearly see that he's wear part of a bear pelt, complete with vertebrae! http://forum.rebelscum.com/...medium/IMG_35434.jpg (as posted in this thread in the Gaming forum)

It's interesting that the bearskin/mail hauberk and shoulderpads appear to be a removable accessory on the action figure (see the third photo in the triptych collage posted by tolkiendrim.com.) However, it's difficult to imagine how that piece would be removed without first taking off the hair and beard.
