James Norman "Jim" Beaver, Jr. is an American stage, film, and television actor, playwright, screenwriter, and film historian ...and I don't know who he is. (and I'm in the US) I take that back. I didn't recognize the name nor the pic of him that was on the main google search hits page. But I know him from Deadwood and Justified. He's also in Supernatural and was on the soap opera, Days of Our Lives. In Deadwood, he played the prospector who married Alma Garret.

an American stage, film, and television actor, playwright, screenwriter, and film historian. He is perhaps most familiar to worldwide audiences as the gruff but tenderhearted prospector Whitney Ellsworth on the HBO Western drama series Deadwood, a starring role which brought him acclaim and a Screen Actors Guild Awards nomination for Ensemble Acting after three decades of supporting work in films and TV. Never heard of him. Edit: Looking him up on IMDb I recognize him as the gun dealer in Breaking Bad. This is most likely a film 2 or 3 cameo.

Or a couple of months ago? I thought they were saving the rest of filming until next year.

Looks like he was vacationing in NZ/promoting his book. Might have just been something quick in front of a green screen.

He was fantastic in Deadwood, a very salt-of-the-earth character with a certain dwarvishness (after all he was a seeker of gold and a bit of a miner, and he never was without his beard!) and a good heart. One of the strongest actors on a cast full of them. He's had less significant parts in Justified and Breaking Bad, two other shows that I love. I think he'll be a good fit for Middle Earth - honestly I could see him in a bigger part as a dwarf or man of Laketown, but a cameo will do nicely.

I loved him in Deadwood - can't wait to see Mr.Ellsworth appear in TH, he has a dwarven quality to his face I think. Agreed with magpie btw.

though anytime I read any reference to Deadwood, I can't help but remember the mind-numbing level of profanity from that show. Even more than the usual HBO quota. When the producers set out to depict "the real rawness and authenticity of life in a frontier mining town" ha, they weren't kdding. When we got to Swerengen's kidney stone surgery, I remember my stomach started doing the wobblies and I turned a slight shade of green. Only the fact that I loved the good Doctor, one of my favorite characters (and fellow LOTR alumnus!) kept me watching. I felt so sorry for him--and boy, what a good job Brad Dourif did....he should have won an Emmy! He'll probably show up in Laketown in some way. Maybe as one of the slimy henchmen of the Mayor. Can't wait.

I wholeheartedly agree - Brad Dourif is just fantastic and deserves more recognition. Doc Cochran was my favourite character in Deadwood, although as most character's in that series, did not get the ending it deserved (Doc's character arc in season 3 is a huge mystery for one thing. It was cancelled way too soon. As for the profanity, it took me quite some time to get used to it, and I am quite used to it to a certain degree seeing as my favourite shows are HBO's two other flagships, Boardwalk Empire and Game of Thrones. Almost, the exception being Calamity Jane - ugh, my least favourite character Deadwood, and the gratuitous profanity didn't help when she opened her mouth, way too much screentime as well.
The greatest adventure is what lies ahead.

Jim Beaver's an excellent character actor, but certainly under the radar for most. Stephen Colbert, on the other hand, is a very popular comedian with a lot of exposure.
"All men dream; but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds awake to find that it was vanity; But the dreamers of day are dangerous men. That they may act their dreams with open eyes to make it possible." - T.E. Lawrence

and what is really interesting is, even though he's had a long and storied career, what probably got him cast in Deadwood is his history of roles in Westerns--namely, he had a big role in Heaven's Gate. That's right, the mother of all film flops (1980). Don't know who he played (why can you never find a copy of Heaven's Gate anywhere? Apparently some have been able to see it). There's a fascinating documentary on the making of Heaven's Gate called "Final Cut: The Making And Unmaking of Heaven's Gate." You can find it on YouTube. He gets a lot of interview time. (and Fun Fact: His daughter has a cameo in a couple of the later episodes of Deadwood--she plays one of the prostitutes working at the new establishment that blonde girl opens up, forgot her name (the one who leaves to become her own Madam.) it's really sweet--she looks just like him. As for Calamity Jane--I agree, while her profanity is wearying after a while, if you listen to the DVD commentaries, you'll find that she was accurately portrayed. She was a fascinating person: that dual nature of fierceness and wildness and on the other hand, motherliness and compassion was real. She really dressed like that, in life she wasn't even as pretty as she was on TV, and her language and manners--one of the quotes I remember from the commentary was something to the effect that, according to eyewitnesses at the time, whenever she walked into a bar, the most low-life and hard-bitten characters would scurry out, b/c she was just enough to knock anyone out (and I'm not talking just with her fists, though she could if she wanted to)--she was just the most "raw" character you would ever want to meet. BUT..at the same time..she got her name "Calamity Jane" b/c whever here was a big "calamity", such as the smallpox epidemic in Deadwood, she'd show up to nurse and help the afflicted and downtrodden in any way she could. She was just this strange mixture of Hellcat Maggie from "Gangs of New York", and Florence Nightengale. The scenes depicting her, um, "nursing" the sick in the "pest house" are pretty much authentic. She was a nurse during that. And she was in love with Wild Bill Hickok as well--an unrequited romance though. When she died she was buried next to him. It's a big tourist attraction today apprently. You can't make this stuff up...

...remember the "dwarf miner" at 12:15-12:17 of vlog #6, the one with the 2-candles hat? Looks just like him. Another example of typecasting perhaps? See the attached photos for comparison-- the eyes look the same to me.
