Hollywood Reporter confirms Stephen Colbert filmed a cameo for The Hobbit, but it won't be in the first film Can't Post

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/stephen-colbert-make-hobbit-cameo-381423

Quote
Stephen Colbert will make a cameo in Peter Jackson's Hobbit trilogy, a knowledgeable source confirms to The Hollywood Reporter.

The host of Comedy Central's The Colbert Report is a huge J.R.R. Tolkien and Lord of the Rings fan who reads Elvish. No word on which role he'll play in the franchise or whether it will be a key character or just part of the background.

Colbert's cameo will not come in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, according to the source. The first film in Jackson and Warner Bros.' trilogy hits theaters Dec. 14 with a cast that includes Martin Freeman, Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Hugo Weaving, Orlando Bloom, Benedict Cumberbatch and Andy Serkis.

Doubt it will be more than a small appearance (maybe non-speaking, maybe a few seconds of screen time with a line or two), but how cool is it to have Colbert in the films?

Not really a fan of Colbert [In reply to] Can't Post

Not going to have any sleepless nights over this but my face did squint a little bit in displeasure.

King Arthur: Who are you who can summon fire without flint or tinder?

Tim: There are some who call me... Tim?

King Arthur: You know much that is hidden oh Tim.

Tim: Quite.

Colbert's not for everyone (obviously), but I think he's a unique choice for a cameo [In reply to] Can't Post

I personally love him, so I'm quite excited to see what his part is (if he's even noticeable on-screen!).

We agree on something! Wink

Colbert is daily viewing for me, as well as Jon Stewart's "The Daily Show". Love those guys - great comedians. Though I can understand - given the usual targets/victims of their brand of comedy - why certain people might not find them all that humorous. Tongue

But I think anyone should be able to appreciate how much of a huge Tolkien geek he is - so I'm overjoyed that he'll get a moment in the trilogy. Though it's at least more than a year away, I'm already counting down to the episode of his show that has him going on and on about the true "star" of the latest Hobbit film! Laugh

He can be made-up well. Man of Lake Town, as all cameos seem to go! [In reply to] Can't Post

Put him in a wispy mustache (like when he parodied George Harrison) and most won't recognize him. Not to say I don't love the guy (best satirist on TV) but I certainly don't want any actor to detract my Middle-Earth experience.

I could easily see him as an elf, but he could also be one of the men in either Laketown and (flashback)-Dale

Yeah [In reply to] Can't Post

I think he'd be best as an elf. He's kind of small boned & without his glasses & a blond wig he'd almost be unrecognizable as himself which I'd prefer. I think cameos are fun when the person doesn't look like themselves-kind of hard to do with PJ, though.

comedians from all over the world [In reply to] Can't Post

I know this is a small role, but overall there are a bunch of comedians filling roles in this story, so I feel correct in thinking that The Hobbit will be a very funny film, much funnier overall than LOTR.

"The world is indeed full of peril, and in it there are many dark places; but still there is much that is fair; and though in all lands love is now mingled with grief, it grows perhaps the greater."-J.R.R. Tolkien
