A closer look at Bolg Can't Post

Title says it all really! Here's a closer look at Bolg:

Link

I love his look. Much scarier than I ever thought he would look.

His beard/hair looks like it's a living, sentinent creature of its own [In reply to] Can't Post

Shoot him!

And cut off his tongue!

And then shoot the tongue!

But seriously, he looks good! So, so glad the villains are going to get more screen time and character developement. The various Orc/Uruk characters were enjoyable enough in LotR, so can't wait to see what we get this time.

He's awesome looking. I would imagine tolkien creating something like this as Orcs can't be pretty looking. Blogs action figure gives you a good idea of how cool looking this is.

Like a character out of the He-Man or Ninja Turtles cartoons. Astoundingly bad, IMO.

This is in sharp contrast to many of the other goblin designs, which are generally great.

I'm not wild about it, either [In reply to] Can't Post

It looks to me like the intersection of both Jackson's and del Toro's worst tendencies (worst to my tastes, of course). The weapon is particularly ridiculous, and brings to mind the discussion in the extended edition commentary in which Jackson admits that he kept increasing the size of the Witchking's mace, despite advice from all corners not to.

That having been said, I'll wait until I see how it plays out before making a final judgment.

Scary YES but Orcish NOT YET [In reply to] Can't Post

He looks indeed scary. Much scarier than some LOTR orcs... but not really orcish (to me). His action-figure is much bigger than Gandalf. Well, he's descriped as big orc, but that big? I thought "big orcs" (Uruk-Hai) are as big as men? Because I can't interpret his face after the one or two different images we got of him. I hope it's not his beard but a kind of trophy. All in all he looks awesome but untill now I miss the typical orcish look.

My Top 5 Wish List for "The Hobbit"
5. Legolas will surf down Smaug's neck
4. Bilbo will be revealed to a Robot
3. Naked PJ cameo as Ghan-Buri-Ghan
2. Use of not only 3D, but smell-o-vision, plus the inclusion of axes coming out of the seats and poking the audience when appropriate
1. Not only keep the claim that Thorin & Co. ran amok in Mirkwood "molesting people", but depict said incident in vivid detail!!!!!

I think the action figure height is a bit off [In reply to] Can't Post

Conan Stevens (Bolg) is 2.16m tall and Ian McKellen is 1.8m.

There is definitely not this much of a height difference between the two actors: http://media.comicbookmovie.com/...ads/8073/hobtoy2.jpg

It seems Azog and Bolg are part of a new Orc breed? [In reply to] Can't Post

Sort of "Super-Duper-Ultra-Creepy-Hai"? Perhaps these Orcs are too independently-minded, too prone to follow their own agendas, thus why we don't see Sauron making use of this in the War of the Ring.

yeah... [In reply to] Can't Post

I love these movies and Weta, but I do wish more of the prominent weapon props looked more like weapons and less like props. I sometimes get the impression that whoever does the designs never was a student of ancient arms of any culture, never learned any blacksmithing, never had any martial arts training (western or eastern), and never even had to sharpen their own kitchen knives much.

Being a poor dilettante in each of the above, inspired in some small part by the books I read as a child by some old english guy or other, the clunky designs make my head hurt a bit.
Then again, I could be totally off and the hero props in the movies will look better than what I've seen in stills... The WK's flail didn't bother me that much at all, so so much for logic.

Sorry, I just had to get that off my chest. I'm still very excited about the movies and set design as a whole.Cool.
Hell, they could show 5 hours of Bilbo making cakes and drinking beer in his house and I'd buy the blu-rays and watch 'em 100 times.

The over-sized mace or whatever looks like a matter of perspective to me. [In reply to] Can't Post

The end of the weapon is thrust close in the foreground, making it seem larger when compared against Bolg who's standing further back. The mace with the BD toy is much more in proportion, and I assume it'll be closer to the less-exaggerated take in the film itself.

General torture and dismemberment? His most inner-held hopes and desires? His impossible romantic fixation with Primula Brandybuck?

Could be fodder for something along the lines of those character diaries people wrote for LotR when the films were hitting theaters. Wink
