At the Ring*Con 2012 (which is happening right now in Bonn, Germany) Thomas Robins confirmed at the press-conference that he plays a tiny little role on "The Hobbit". He wouldn't tell anything about the role, though. In LOTR, Robins played Déagol in the prologue of "Return of the King". Also, he played the main role in PJs mockumentary "Forgotten Silver". And we've had hints that Gollum has an extended role ... what if ...

We are getting a flashback to Smeagol's younger days with his Grandmother. Eggses remind him of his Grandmother .... cue flashback!

In fact, that's exactly what we get in the book. We're taken away from the riddles and brought to Gollum's younger days for just a moment until he answers the riddle. Good thought!

This is him at the time of filming. He looks like he's lost weight, but he could still get away with it. He's probably not returning as Deagol anyway.

As far as I am concerned, those hints have been debunked

I don't believe that there has been any reputable source that has made that assertion, just the bogus Reddit guy. Serkis himself has consistently indicated that he filmed one very intense scene (Riddles in the Dark) at the very beginning of filming, and then transitioned completely to his role as second unit director. I don't put any credence at all to the lingering suggestions that Gollum has an expanded role.

Mostly because there is no good reason to expand his role. However, a flashback during the riddling is not really an expanded role. It is more of a visual window into his thoughts, as opposed to a textual one that the book provided.

Considering that as he is thinking of the answer, when he remembers his grandmother. By the way, what did Gollum mean when he said he had been teaching his grandmother to suck eggs? What does that mean. Anybody know? I've been wondering that for the longest time.

Taking literally it is the act of removing the contents of an egg by making two holes in it, without damaging the shell- so it can be painted or decorated. It was quite a popular activity of school boys during the period Tolkien grew up in and was writting in. However the phrase- 'teaching grandmother to suck eggs'- can also mean somone who is going on about something the person being addressed already knows about. I suppose its not disimilar in meaning to the more common phrase 'preaching to the choir'. So it depends how you want to take it- either the rather sweet image of a young Smeagol sitting with his grandmother teaching her how to suck eggs- or he was sitting with her full of himself going on at her about stuff she already knew. More likely Tolkien meant it the first way but with the meaning of the second as a sort of joke double meaning.

That he could be returning as Deagol in a very small way and yet be seen just a bit as an extra?

I almost took it literally, but knew it couldn't possibly be literally sucking eggs.

Really, I want to see as much Middle-earth as possible, even if only in the EEs . I still have hopes of seeing Brandybuck Hall, the "ancient home of the Brandybucks", although I don't know how they could fit it in.
