Of all this excitement. I fully expected to be feeling the same sense of anticipation and anxiousness for the opening myself, but at this point I just can't seem to dig it out. If anything I'm actually not even sure now that I want to go see it at all  . And that realization really kind of blows me away... After decades of waiting for a real movie adaptation I never imagined this would happen. Big conflicting emotions about the whole thing. It feels very bizarre and strange...

I will still go see it, for sure. But the trailer made me realize that there is little chance of this actually being a really good movie.
It will likely be decent, kinda fun fantasy, with its share of stupidities, and that's about it.

I've been feeling this way for over a year now since they released the dwarf designs. It just seems like they are making a joke and kind of a mockery of the story to me. The last trailer just further cemented the feeling. This really isn't the thread to go on about it as I don't want to ruin the fun of those that are excited, but it brought out what I had been thinking about recently with the release coming up is all.

I shall get most of the literary tie-ins - already have Brian Sibley's book on pre-order, and the Weta Design Chronicles - and I'm keeping my fingers crossed for Collector's Editions of the EEs like we were treated to with LotR. I might get a few other bits of 'tasteful' merchandize if anything catches my eye, but I won't go overboard. Probably the kids will end up with more Hobbit-related stuff than me! We've already got Christmas lists drawn up with LotR Lego, sets and suchlike... the forthcoming Wii Lego LotR videogame is also desperately waited upon!
The best thing for me is that my kids are all old enough to enjoy the movies at the theatre with me properly this time around.

The first time I went to see FOTR, despite having kept up with the trailers, TV specials, spoilers, etc., my brain still expected it to follow the book. When it didn't in spots, I felt conflicted, even though I generally loved the movie overall. With more and more viewings, I got more and more used to it, and grew to love (most of) the changes too.
With you, it sounds like the opposite: you expect it to be so *not* like the book you're convinced you're going to hate it even before you've seen it. Maybe this is one of those 'expect the worst, then be pleasantly surprised' situations? If you *do* decide to go see it, I hope that's the outcome for you.

I plan to pretty much, walk into cinema, buy ticket and then watch the film, simples
I dont really feel the need to buy any tie in books, i have followed things on here real close and tbh i think they are just cash grabs. I got the lotr ones and i read them once and after that they sat on my self for a few years til i gave them away. Obviously if others find they have repeated viewings in them, then its a great idea for an xmas present.
I am going to get or ask around to see if someone is getting my little sister the lotr lego xbox game - if no one is then i will get it for her as i think she will love it and secretly i wanna play it as well!
In reply to R11 i have been less enthusiastic about this film since the trailer but at the end of the day its just a trailer and can give the wrong impression on what the film will be like. For me i think it will be good but nothing special i would love it to be special though and hope it can smash my expectations.

The Sibley LOTR book has a lot of unseen behind the scenes pictures and he goes into detail about the production. I certainly enjoyed it.

One must walk into the theater without expectations. The movies will be what they are. This is difficult to do as we have saturated our minds with all that we know about the content and the process of making them. You need to relax and let it happen. A critical mind will interfere with the first viewing, There will be time to criticize later.

I'm afraid my finances will be decimated after going to Wellington for my birthday/TH Premier funtimes, but I plan on seeing TH multiple times.
I will go to the midnight screening with my partner, probably. Then I'll watch it again with various groups of friends, both in 3D and 2D. I'm not sure if my local theatre in Christchurch will get upgraded to 48fps, but I have a feeling it won't. I plan on seeing it at least once by myself. I don't plan on queuing for ages for tickets or anything, though - I'm disabled so it wouldn't actually be possible for me. I just hope people will be conscientious of their fellow movie-goers when the time comes :)
It's also possible that the university sci-fi club will do a private screening for club members, which would be pretty awesome. We did one for The Avengers and it was great fun to be in a theatre completely filled with geeky friends - it was like a big party!
I remember when FotR was released, I was living in a tiny little town which wouldn't be screening the movie for at least a month after it was showing in the cities, so my parents took me to the city to see it. When it finally came to my hometown, I saw it several times a week, as it only cost NZ$5 to go to the movies. It was all volunteer run, and even had intermission so they could sell snacks and make more money to keep the place running. Very cute!

I have to wait until the days around Christmas to see The Hobbit with my siblings. We'll have to figure out which day since Christmas is a Tuesday - maybe Christmas Eve or Sunday the 23rd.
There are five of us, and since my brother and I are the biggest fans, he and I have to sit in positions 2 and 4 so that there is a sister on each side of us in case they have questions.

I've had a separate savings account and piggy bank in action for over 4 years just waiting for these films to be spawned.... and that's been since before it was 2 films let-alone 3!! *twitch*
Now, that sounds like it would have a lot of money in it, but there's enough for film 1 viewings, some books, a dvd or 2, some toys, etc. I won't be able to go as nuts on the extras like I did for LotR... no travelling to conventions/Oscar Parties, a few Sideshow pieces, etc.... but I will enjoy going to the films, fersher! I'm in contact with my local theatre managers trying to work out a multi-viewing ticket price ;)
I'm working with the theatre about putting together a LotR marathon in December and a Hobbit line party. I've done a marathon with them before, but never a line party... so that's a bit intimidating ;)
I'll be buying my first batch of tickets as soon as they go on sale! The first day, I'll see it at least twice. I prefer to go to these alone or with people who are geeks; but mostly alone so I can really be absorbed into it.
Making a costume for Halloween/Opening Night for The Hobbit. If I don't get it done in time for the first film, I'll either wear my gramma gammer costume or my gramma Wraith/Nazgul costume... it's very comfy :) Believe me, nothing is weirder than a 5' 3" 60 yo gramma Black Rider ;) As long as I keep my hood on, it's just a mini-Black running around.
I'm taking at least one day off from work to get to the theatre all I want! I'll go see them in 3D a few times, but most of my transports to Middle-earth will be the old-fashioned, conventional format. I don't want to be distracted AT ALL!
Practice patience and tolerance. The worse part of my theatre viewings is when the people around me eat and rattle their packages. Drives me NUTS! AND... AND... those people who stand up when the credits start and just stand there... putting on their coats... waiting to get into the steps/isles.... while I'm still sitting there obviously watching the credits. You'd be amazed how many people do the same sort of thing when the movie is starting!!! They show up just when it's beginning and stand there taking off their coats, discussing who will sit where, rattle their freakin' food.... ARGH!!! SIT DOWN! So have a care, folks, when you're in and out of the movies. Don't be a tourist and dawdle in front of those sitting and enjoying their experience. *puff, pant* Not much makes me angry... but this stuff really does! This and oblivious drivers ;) And empty ice cream containers. *sniffle* So sad....
That said, however... I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE to go to the first viewings when the place is packed to the gills with people who love these films! The energy and excitement is palpable! You can swim in the good vibes and anticipation! Excited, geeky noises coming from viewers (woots, gasps, laughter, tears, applause) doesn't bother me a bit... cuz usually I'm right in there with them... if not the instigator ;)
Hobbity stuff I've already got:
Sideshow/Weta: Gandalf sitting and smoking pipe and exclusive Bag End environ with rooms. I consider both of these Hobbit-esque pieces since they came out well after LotR items.

Compiling The Hobbit Geeky Observation List. That means I'll take a tablet with me every time I go to write down observation. A HEADS-UP TO EVERYONE! I'm in the process THIS WEEK of asking for observations from all of you based on what we've already seen to put onto the list. There's going to be a list for each film, so be sure to note which film the observation is for. If you're not sure what I'm talking about, check out my link below to see the LotR Observations lists. They're in the process of being updated/edited... so a few changes are being made. Please don't give the observations here... just watch for my post in a few days :)
This is all just so surreal. We've been waiting for these films for so many years and through so many threats and changes... I'm just so happy that they have finally been born and that Peter Jackson and his entire filmic-family are the ones to do it. I can't think of one single thing that has not been done or included that I have remorse for. I'm already so territorial anticipating these that it's getting hard to focus. So many years of hoping. This is all such a dream come true!!!
I really need these new films to take me back to, and not re-introduce me to, that magical world.

Specific opinions as to the quality of the films or whether they should be seen won't affect my decision. An overall mental picture of the content based on the collective response will (including all spoilers.)
