During the day for a matinee showing with my wife. When there are only five or six other people in the audience. Not a fan of opening nights, or crowds of people in costumes cheering and laughing and breaking my immersion in the film world. Wish I was, though, as people seem to really enjoy themselves!

There's really a special atmosphere. People are really immersed in the movie, which can be both great and horrible (depending on the audience of course). I watched the 7th HP movie at midnight and that was a joy. Though at times it took off a bit too much. I remember a group of people who laughed loudly at every single jokes, as well as a group of teenage girls who screamed at everything mildly surprising. Film 8th's midnight premiere was rather quiet though.

though silence would be even better I think the midnight opening atmosphere from how yourself and others have described it to be is great, but for me not the first time i go to see the film. I go to see the film first and foremost, if i know i like it and have caught most/all of whats going on in the movie then i would love to go to a screening where people are more vocal in their appreciation of the film. I think if i were trying to watch it and some random fans kept screaming every time gandalf came on screen, i would end up getting really annoyed!

I have a question, and yes, I am completely out of touch. If a movie premiers at midnight, will the next viewing on opening day be at prime time? Or will the next viewing be the following morning? Can it vary? I should add I am in a major city in the US. I'm trying to make my big plan and must know all my options.

Depends on the cinema, I'd say.

Although I'm sure they'd try to squeeze as many screenings into a day as possible. At my local cinema the first screening after the midnight show was 9am. I remember, as I raced in to get to the 9am screening of FOTR as our midnight screening had screeched to a halt one hour in when the reels were joined incorrectly. I was very, very tired that afternoon.
Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..." Dwarves: "Pretty rings..." Men: "Pretty rings..." Sauron: "Mine's better." "Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded b*****d with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak. They had 3am screenings for The Dark Knight Rises AFTER the midnight ones. I suspect something similar to happen with The Hobbit: AUJ. I wannnnnaaaa beeee thereeeee at midnighttttttt.

People are generally slow to buy tickets here, so I'll just walk down to the cinema the day they start selling (unless internet ordering is open).

I've been wondering about this as well - do people still camp outside cinemas like they did 10 years ago? I obviously want to go to the first screening available of TH in my country, but I don't know the best way of aquiring tickets for it.

Us vikings of Scandinavia - well, we are going to have to tackle much more than rain in mid-december! Freezing cold, thick layer of snow, and incredibly cold winds are standard procedure here!

In Norway we have to go out in snowstorms while the temperature is bellow 20 or ever 30 Celsius! And that's when it's hot!
