Agreed. [In reply to] Can't Post

I work in post and there are definitely many stages.

On the most recent show I worked on, we utilized several different stages to complete the process before delivery.

The DIT offloaded the content that was shot, backed up the data, did a QC check, and then transferred the data back to our post facility.

The content was then transcoded into an offline/online video encoding conducive to editing for story and grading/finishing.

So after the content was prepped (transcoded, synced with dual system sound, and master project files created). The project went through:

Story (Several Passes)
Rough Cut 1 (Several Passes)
Rough Cut 2 (Several Passes)
Final Edit 1 (Fine tuning, tweaking)
Final Edit 2 (Fine tuning, tweaking)
Lock (Story and pacing are locked)
Color Correction/Grading (correcting visual mistakes, making everything look pretty)
Sound Mixing
Delivery

Anyway, i'm dreading a shorter running time. I want my Middle Earth movies long. I don't get bored from spending time in Middle Earth. Please, PJ, don't disappoint me!

Don't forget, since PJ released extended editions for LOTR, he might do so later with The Hobbit. Either way, December 14th will be a night to remember!

I guess. But whatever the case I'm thinking it will be very close to 2 hours 30 minutes, more or less.

It will be shorter. [In reply to] Can't Post

The fact that a film ending after mirkwood was actually a possibility means that this film will be shorter than LOTR. I'm just hoping that it won't be too much shorter.

But it doesn't make sense [In reply to] Can't Post

The film shouldn't be made shorter, when there is still plenty of material to be shown. If it's 2 hours, then they should carry the journey on, and have them enter Mirkwood.

I guess it depends on... [In reply to] Can't Post

whether the author of the article understands the various stages of post and what they mean by final.

There are several "finals" that occur before the ultimate final delivery... which is when we will have the accurate running time.

Seem's a little too early to have that kind of a figure yet.

I'm just saying it will be shorter than a LOTR film. [In reply to] Can't Post

With all the Mirkwood stuff cut out it can't still be three hours, other wise AUJ in it's duology form would have been 4 and a half to 5 hours (with all the Mirkwood/Dol Guldur scenes). I'm hoping for 2.5 hours for this first film now.

But not the other two. And expect at least an EE with 30-45 minutes of extra footage. Angelic

I hate to burst anyone's bubble... [In reply to] Can't Post

...the article says edit booth for final mix. That means sound design, (one of the last things that gets completed on a film) or the author doesn't know what he or she is really talking about. The final edit may already be completed, so the runtime may still be as rumored. Crazy

"There is a long road yet," said Gandalf. "But it is the last road," said Bilbo.

i agree... the verbiage is pretty vague. I think the report is probably accurate in that he is moving into the final stages of post... but like I've maintained in previous posts... that could mean a number of things.

though the same thing [In reply to] Can't Post

But knowing how news works a reporter writes the story and someone else writs the headline. It's not unusual for The headline to be totally wrong. So it may be Peter is doing the final mix... which would mean he is closer to finishing.

All artists are prepared to suffer for their work, but why are so few prepared to learn to draw? :BANKSY

Thanks for the peak into post production, Owain. [In reply to] Can't Post

It seems a miracle that a film ever makes it on to the screen. Tweak tweak tweak! One thing I've enjoyed about the Peter Jackson film experience is the chance to see how the magic gets done through the LOTR EE's and his production videos. It doesn't diminish the wonder for me, just makes me more intrigued. Keep those behind-the-curtain insights coming, OK?

I enjoy him sharing the process too.

In fact, the Lord of the Rings and the Extended Editions were what helped me to decide I wanted to pursue a career in post-production.

I still marvel at not only the quality of the work but also the joy, passion, and ultimately the vulnerability with which he and his team share it.

Time = $$$ [In reply to] Can't Post

I hope the sneaky marketing tricksters didn't just turn two 3 hour films into three 2 hour films. Same running time, but more screenings and dvds to buy $$$. See what they did there? Mad

Davy Jones could've been Bilbo...I mean he was a Brit with a sense for adventure, singing & dancing. And think of the costs it would've save with forced perspective: he was ACTUALLY 5'3. He also hung out with a grumpy tall dude in a hat (Mike Nesmith.) While we're at it let's just have Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork as Merry & Pippin.
