"It will be good, bro" - Interview with Hobbit set rigger Can't Post

stuff.co.nz have a short, but positive, interview up with Jay Rei, a rigger on the set of The Hobbit.

A snippet:

Quote

Among his souvenirs are gold coins from Smaug the Dragon's lair, a 13-year-old bottle of wine from Sir Ian McKellen (Gandalf), an aged-carved picture frame which he gave to his mother and a hand-made elvish wine bottle which will stay a family heirloom.

There are no spoilers, but may be of interest to some. Smile

If the films were going to be bad [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm sure a rigger involved in the production would have said so. Wink

"The movies are gonna suck, dude. Save your money."

Crazy

"BOTH [political] extremes are dangerous. But more dangerous are team fanboys who think all the extremists are on the OTHER side." (CNN reader comment)

How long before [In reply to] Can't Post

Someone zooms in with cutting edge resolution-enhancing technology, and reveals the spoilerific dwarvish runes, or Dale-ish inscriptions, on those gold coins? Smile

depends on the crew [In reply to] Can't Post

but in my experience most under the line folks really don't even know or care the film they are working on.

It could just be a Los Angeles thing though.

Kiwi's seem to be a little more passionate in that regard.

He wouldn't lie to us after calling the interviewer "bro"! That'd be a breach of Kiwi honor!

One possible spoiler [In reply to] Can't Post

The comment about the hand-made Elvish wine bottle suggests that the scene in which Galion and the guard captain (who may or may not be Tauriel) drink Elvish wine is in in some form.

'But very bright were the stars upon the margin of the world, when at times the clouds about the West were drawn aside.'

. . . I think the picture is way too small to do too much with . . .

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began
Now far ahead the Road has gone
And I must follow, if I can

looked towards the mirror . . . . . . . . . 'Durin's bones', he gasped, 'what's happened to my beard?'"

all I get from my expansion and attempts to sharpen is a hint of some kind of animal . . . that and all the coins seem the same . . .
. . . I hope they aren't all the same, as Smaug stole from many folk, and the dwarves wouldn't have had just one type of coin . . .

Hmmmmm . . . maybe they call them 'durins' . . . [In reply to] Can't Post

Gold Durins . . . there are silver Durins for smaller purchases, but no self-respecting dragon would lay on silver coins.
And dwarven coins would be pure . . . dwarves are not cutting their coins with nickel. No, no, no, no . . . pure coins for the dwarves.

That amount of gold in his hands would buy, what, a nice little farmstead in a secluded vale off to the side of the Lonely Mountain? A Dale townhouse? Sly

Before, I was very skeptical of whether Jackson's three-film Hobbit would be any good, but after reading this, I'm sold. These are definitely going to be the best yet.

Actually, the device of the coin that you superimposed upon is somewhat visible. It looks to me like a four-legged animal, upside-down... maybe a boar?

Man is but an ass if he go about to expound this dream.
