Smoke-Rings as a GCI device...

I knew when Bilbo&G-man..
were sitting on the front Step
Blowing Smoke Rings and G. formed
a sailing ship thorough B-boys ring
and then they dissolved..I knew We were
in a movie of Special Magifigance.
SO here we are on the Front step of these 3
and any ideas on how to use this device
to all..it's 3D-CGI...glory?

smoking a pipe. He was blowing the most enormous
smoke-rings,and wherever he told them to go, it went-up
the chimney, or behind the clock on the mantlepeice, or under
the table, or round and round the ceiling; but wherever it went

Then Gandalf's smoke-ring would go green and come back and hover
over the wizard's head. He had a cloud of them over his head already
and in the dim light it made him look strange and sorcerous..."

i love just imagining what that would look like, PJ better include those! plus if viewers start with TH, Gandalf almost seems a bit sinister with green smoke rings going around him in the dark.
From the bottom of the Long-Lake a dragon shall be possessed...green lights glowing out of the deep waters shall be seen where the dragon fell...reanimated shall be Smaug that was killed...and the Dark Lord will fly over Middle-Earth unopposed...raining fire down upon his enemies...

in The Misty Mountains to entertain Bilbo and The Dwarves as they prepared for sleep! I don't know if the Wizard's enchanted smoke rings will make it in, but I very much hope they do, and I think there is a good chance of it, considering the effort Peter put into giving them a place in LOTR, where they otherwise don't make an appeareance. It adds so much of that powerful, simple wonder and charm, and I think it will further humanize Bilbo and The Dwarves to see them staring with wonder and pleasure at the Wizard's art, as Bilbo does in Fellowship.

Honestly seeing bilbo (and of course the dwarves) blowing smoke rings and gandalf making magic ones will not only be a "cool" 3d effect it will harken back to the lord of the rings movies and give the audience a sense of nostalgia for that scene.
In the long run it will also give the scene in fellowship where gandalf and bilbo have a smoke together as old friends another layer of charm as the audience will now have seen them years earlier relaxing together the same way.
PJ would have to be crazy not to take the opportunity to include those scenes.

Distruction?
This is a campfire story-telling adventure..so
a flashback within a Smoke-Ring sounds
like aPerfectly logical Cinema Device.

A vertical smoke ring moving towards the audience, the inside of the ring then turns into a flashback, but we still see the outside of the ring (i.e. Mirkwood) until the flashback sequence takes up the entire screen. If that makes sense?
Kind of like zooming through the Ring in Mount Doom in ROTK, but reversed.

Your writing weaves beautiful imagery for me, and I find it intriguing. So much so, that I look forward to your posts. I came out of hiding from behind a 3D smoke ring to say so.

That's the kind of device film school teaches you to abandon before the end of the fist class. 
But I can't wait for 3D smokerings, to be honest. If there was ever an appropriate use for 3D in these films, this is it.

Keystone Cops? or The Birth of a. Nation "
Anyway
PJ had a great " Horizontal Wipe"
when he needed a transistion from
Aragorn Gimli Leggy entering Fangorn to show what had
happened to Merry & Pippin? CHECK that in TTT.
Transistion dissolves come in" Fades to Black"
to. .."Fades to White" which PJ also used..
One in Particular I loved was when Awen invisioned
Eldarion?..running towards an Old grey Aragorn..
sorta a 45Degree wipe from the Forest
to reveal Full frame.... of him being picked up
her possiable Son?

"Birth of a Nation" out of the commentary, as it is one of the most vilely revisionist, duplicitous, racist films in the history of your nation and mine 
That said, I understand both your points. I do see how a 3D smokering as a framing device might come across as gimmicky, but I also think 3D smokerings in general, and the inclusion of Gandalf's enchanted smokerings would be absolutely wondrous, and it would be a mistake for Peter to leave them out.

I just think that David Lean's revolutionary cut from the match to the desert in Lawrence of Arabia was one of the best things to happen to cinema.
In general, I find fades of this sort to look gimmicky and cheap, whether they feature in older or more modern films.
That said, I do hope PJ keeps the smoke rings in!

This is one of my favourite passages from TH. Not sure why - just amuses me on many levels. I love the slightly perverse pleasure Gandalf takes in making them wait, as well as the idea of him unashamedly stuffing his face.
'At last Gandalf pushed away his plate and jug - he had eaten two whole loaves (with masses of butter and honey and clotted cream) and drunk at least a quart of mead - and he took out his pipe. "I will answer the second question first," he said, '-but bless me! this is a splendid place for smoke rings!" Indeed for a long time they could get nothing more out of him, he was so busy sending smoke rings dodging round the pillars of the hall, changing them into all sorts of different shapes and colours, and setting them at last chasing one another out of the hole in the roof. They must have looked very queer from outside, popping out into the air one after another, green, blue, red, silver-grey, yellow, white; big ones, little ones; little ones dodging through big ones and joining into figure-eights, and going off into a flock into the distance.'
From what I've seen of the Beorn's house set, it looks as if it would be a splendid place indeed for smoke-rings. I really, really hope they include this sequence.
