Okay, now which chapter of Lord of the Rings do you like the most?

I picked The Grey Havens, although in a way it is also the chapter I like the least, if you know what I mean. Parting is such sweet sorrow!

But I also like Council of Elrond (see, I told you, the Rivendell Chapters! ). However, your reasoning about the Grey Havens is also soooo true. Darn you, Curious! I can't decide!

even though for me the part I like starts with Sam finding Frodo in Shelob's lair. Then he finds that Frodo is still alive and even though he is terrified he goes after him and his need to find and save Frodo is greater than his fear. This question is hard because there is so much I like, even as there is so little I don't like.

because of the writing and the tension, but an extremely close second is The Council of Elrond. I ate this up with a spoon the first time around because I finally got a lot of answers about what was going on!

I finally picked The Bridge of Khazad-dum, but it still just leaves me kind of in shock and open-mouthed, but I could just as easily have picked Strider or The Houses of Healing, because of Aragorn, or The Field of Cormallen because of Sam, or The Window on the West because of Faramir, or The Greay Havens, just because. I think my mood at the moment of choice is a major factor in my choice of a favorite chapter.

I love "The Ring Goes South" most of all. Why? - Elrond and Gimli's catchphrase duel at the start - Horn of Gondor! - I love long hikes and being out in the wilderness, and Tolkien evokes Eregion in winter so beautifully, I can feel the cold wind on my face and the rough ground underneath - Mountains, Gandalf! - and most of all, the beginning of the Fellowship; the forging of bonds that will last beyond the circles of this world

I actually voted for Window on the West, on the basis of "which chapter could I read over and over and over without getting sick of it." But I had a tough debate between one from each book: Breaking of the Fellowship (Boromir's fall is incredible), Window on the West, and The Houses of Healing (I like the interactions between Faramir and Aragorn). Interesting that each of these three features one of the sons of Denethor significantly. Well, Aragorn's my favorite character, but Faramir is my second favorite. Beyond these, I also considered Strider (Aragorn!), The Council of Elrond (I actually like all the digressions), The Bridge of Khazad-dum (Gandalf vs. the Balrog), and The Steward and the King (more Faramir and Aragorn).

I particularly like Merry's reply after Frodo says, "But it does not seem that I can trust anyone." But, also, The Scouring of the Shire in that it shows how much the Hobbits have changed. It is kind of like when you live with someone, you don't really don't notice them growing older, but when you see someone you haven't seen in a long time, you really notice the change. We are with the Hobbits throughout their long adventure. Of course, we know that they have changed, but when they get back to The Shire, how much they have changed is brought into sharp focus.

I love the coversations with Faramir and the history of Gondor, as well as the quizzing of Sam and Frodo. Last time I read the books this one really stood out for me as well-written, informative, and essential to understanding what happens next.

Though I was tempted to vote for one of the three Bombadil chapters, which I like more than many people. There is a little nonsense verse by Tom that's not found in "The Old Forest", by the way. These two passages are from "In the House of Tom Bombadil":
Every now and again they caught, among many a derry dol and a merry dol and a ring a ding dillo the repeated words: Old Tom Bombadil is a merry fellow; Bright blue his jacket is, and his boots are yellow.
When he heard them stir he clapped his hands, and cried: ‘Hey! Come merry dol! derry dol! My hearties!’ He drew back the yellow curtains, and the hobbits saw that these had covered the windows, at either end of the room, one looking east and the other looking west.

But we don't actually hear any verses with nonsense in them. In the first case we are told that he is singing such verses, but don't hear them. In the second we only hear one line, not a verse (although that single line is probably enough to annoy those who find such verses annoying).

I picked this because I often pick it up and read it, and then a bit more, when I feel like some LOTR, but not the whole lot. But I also like all the Rohan section, and the Pippin/Gondor stuff too.

I voted for "The Battle of the Pelennor Fields", although I'd have to include Gandalf confronting the Witch-King and hearing the horns of Rohan, and the beginning of the charge of the Rohirrim as well. Okay, to be honest, I'd probably pick all of Book Five plus "The Steward and the King" -- the story simply goes from height to height here. Eowyn killing the W-K, the standard of Arwen unfurling on the ship, Eomer and Aragorn meeting on the field of battle . . . No matter how many times I've read these passages -- and I've read them many, many, times -- the mixture of gallantry and glory and despair takes my breath away. And Eowyn's always been one of my favorite characters.

but Frodo stood awhile still lost in wonder. It seemed to him that he had stepped through a high window that looked on a vanished world. A light was upon it for which his language had no name. All that he saw was shapely, but the shapes seemed at once clear cut, as if they had been first conceived and drawn at the uncovering of his eyes, and ancient as if they had endured for ever. He saw no colour but those he knew, gold and white and blue and green, but they were fresh and poignant, as if he had at that moment first perceived them and made for them names new and wonderful. In winter here no heart could mourn for summer or for spring. No blemish or sickness or deformity could be seen in anything that grew upon the earth. On the land of Lórien there was no stain."

I'm surprised I'm the first to pick The Field of Cormallen. This is the climax of the story for me, the eucatastrophe. I love the interplay at the beginning, where all the storylines that have at times been in separate books, and more recently in separate chapters, have finally all come together. I love that Frodo is finally free of his burden, and the line 'I am glad that you are here with me,’ said Frodo. ‘Here at the end of all things, Sam.’ I love Sam's joy at his awakening, and his tears, and 'Is everything sad going to come untrue? What’s happened to the world?' I love their reaction to Strider as king, and Merry and Pippin's story, and most of all: ‘Long live the Halflings! Praise them with great praise! Cuio i Pheriain anann! Aglar’niPheriannath! Praise them with great praise, Frodo and Samwise! Daur a Berhael, Conin en Annûn! Eglerio! Praise them! Eglerio! A laita te, laita te! Andave laituvalmet! Praise them! Cormacolindor, a laita tárienna! Praise them! The Ring-bearers, praise them with great praise!’ Later, there will be more pain, especially for Frodo. And although I love the ending too, as much as I hate it (as Curious says): this is one brief shining moment where nothing is wrong in the world.
